The past few weeks has been very interesting, and could be described as being fresh and fun skilling back into the laser rifle. I have found IMO that the LR is not too much different than the former beast it once was as far as collecting tears on the battlefield. I have found having very high rounds, and rounds that are below average, and that it is not very good in many of situations, but fits in with the role of squad leader in Domination very well.
For those of you skilled in the Laser Rifle, would you care to share your strategy ,secrets or perhaps success stories?

Not quite secrets, but I can give my general feedback, as I've started using them again today.
Overall, they're very effective when in their optimal range. However, I think the optimal is too specific to be realistic. Lasers would be more practical if the optimal range was expanded 5-10m in both directions.
Also, the increase in feedback damage over tiers is unnecessary, 2 things could be changed about this. Either remove the increase in damage altogether, or incorporate the heat indicator as part of the sight, so it isn't so easy to overheat. |

Personally, I love the LR, and I'm believing more and more that the maps were designed around LR use.
Seriously, there are so many places that a LR is useful, and they just happen to be fairly high traffic areas spaced just far apart enough to constantly be in optimal. Taken out tons of MD / Forge roof campers with this thing. I'm pretty surprised that not many people use it. |

Use the laser rifle to make ARs rage. Thats the most important part. But seriously, use it to control distance of engagement for your friends. By camping out watching a city entrance, you can discourage enemies from pushing up while letting allies get set up all around the outer walls, waiting for the fools to get fed up with laser fire and charge. Then the friendlies kill them and you farm the assists and kills with your death-beam sweep.
Also, team up with a mass driver bro for area denial to the max. You eat shields for breakfast, and the mass driver friend chomps on the big ol' chunks of armour that you cant stomach. |

Watched the whole video. Early on it seemed like you were spending too much time aiming at people outside of the optimal range but as the match went on not so much - not trying to insult your play because you did very well and it is like you said how you play. A few things I disagree with that you brought up,
Investing a lot of points into the laser rifle. You made it sound like you need to use a Viziam with high proficiency and a couple complex damage mods in able to wreck with the laser rifle, but honestly that is not the case. For the longest time in Uprising I used a simple standard laser rifle with no mods at all and was really efficient at it. Now I use an ELM with no proficiency and a single enhanced damage mod (I run advanced suits in pub matches) and feel godly on the battlefield. But seriously, just through 12k skill points or however much it costs to get Operations 1 and you can tear apart anyone, even protos. Throwing more SP at it makes it a bit easier, but the its more about understanding the weapon than it is investing points.
Secondly, you said it is only really good for Domination. That's cool, your opinion, but in my opinion it is best in Ambush, then Skirmish, and lastly Domination but overall good in all three. I say it's the best at Ambush because most the time what happens in Ambush is you get two big blops of guys shooting at each other across a no-mans-land, which is perfect to take advantage of the laser rifle. Then I say Skirmish as second because there are multiple objectives so it won't be much of an issue for your team to control at least one, then like you said play some defense and don't let anyone get close. It can also be good in Skirmish if you are following an attacking squad a good distance behind and playing support. And finally I say Domination not so much because it is ineffective, because it's not as your video clearly proved, but because I am always trying to win even in pub matches and in Domination you really need to be swarming the single objective. If you sit out and play perimeter while the enemy has the objective then it is the equivalence of the enemy holding all the objectives in Skirmish and you're hiding somewhere in your redline sniping - yeah you may get a lot of kills but you aren't helping your team make a real push for the objective. Of course if you already have the objective then by all means start lasering everyone who gets close.
Just my two cents. Glad to see a video showing the laser rifle working effectively. |

I've been using the laser rifle since the start of Chormosome and even on into Uprising and I have to say that now we have the glare from the beam reduced this gun is an utter joy to use... however that wont last as the sights are going to be ruined.
My style of using the LR is to build up hear rapidly, I like to tag my targets and get a feel for how they move, however its in the last few seconds of firing the laser that I like to make my move so to speak, as opposed to other player I know who like to keep an average heat value and reload and overheat less.
As I said before this gun is a joy to use I absolutely love it, its the most interesting weapon out there.
My success story would have to be one of the many games I've had with PIE where we managed to sneak up on top of some girders on Ashland. What started out and me giggling away to my hearts content soon degenerated into mad cackling and screams of "BURN THE HERETICS".... and I've been this way ever since.
The other success story is a PIE gun line we managed to set up on Manus where we locked down an entire objective between 3 people, denied the enemy the open ground in front of it, and pushed and took their only remaining objective from them. |

PIE members know their stuff about Amarrian weapons, not to demean your understanding of them, but there are various styles of laser play, and I tend to find the Laser to be very ineffective on Domi maps, and much better on Ambush and Skirmish Maps. |

I also enjoy the laser rifle and went 10/0 with it last night.
The LR is a psychological weapon, when people see the beam sweeping around a certain area they tend to stay away. As stated above in an earlier post, it is a great area denial weapon and I use it as such. If you're rushing in on the front lines with the LR, you're doing it wrong. |

Kite , kite and more kite-in' If you get even remotely close to anything your history.
I like to stack a few damage mods and keep out at distance. I see it sort of like a semi sniping role, apart from I actually move around the battlefield.
Usually roll with nanohives. I just wish I had an Amarr suit to use it with. I overheat pretty damn fast yo.
Oh by the way this is a highly one of a kind type of situation BUT -
stack 3 to 4 complex damage mods, get that basic laser rifle charged up nearing its higher heat levels and boom switch over to a heavy suit and they melt in a second or two :)

Depending on the map, my roles can vary from point defense to mid-range suppressive fire. It's really all about positioning, and what gives you the greatest advantage Given that it's a mid-range weapon, the ranges for positioning would be ~40-80m from targets. Continuously watching the team and how the flank is forming and setting up a position behind that flank to act as either point defense or you can take on a more active role and move around acting with suppressive fire and anti-infantry. Taking advantages of high ground such as rooftops, table tops, high areas with walls so you aren't exposed are the greatest areas to setup.
Secrets? I guess one is I don't do the folk lore 'preheating' to increase damage on targets before putting the laser on them. The sound of a laser rifle is very loud and gives away positions quickly. I have never noticed a difference in damage from not pre-heating and pre-heating. What seems to matter most is the range you are at.
Success stories? On most games since I've perfected my strategy, I rarely die(0-2 deaths a game), and nab between 8-20 kills a game with it. This includes PC matches too. Though in PC matches my deaths increase since the game is more fast pace and flanks change in a moments notice. Another success story is I can melt proto forge guns in 2 seconds. That's before they can't even get their charged shot off. |

Note: You also stated you have to get your skills in prof for this to be a effective weapon. This is highly incorrect. I was doing those scores with a adv laser rifle with LR 3. Prof makes this weapon better 10 fold, but saying you MUST have prof skills is wrong. I mainly use adv laser rifles in pub matches with great success.
Must was an overstatement, bit imo if you want the heat reduction bonus and dmg bonus it is in ones favor. Many players pick up the basic and get frustrated and dismiss it as a viable option on the battlefield with out any sp investment, which is somewhat unfair imo. We can squad up anytime, it will be fun.... i used to run full LR squads back in chromo and it was a blast! |

Yes, but that is the sentinel class bonus, not the Amarr Sentinel Racial bonus (which is heavy weapon reload speed). Kind of silly considering it appears they only have 4 heavy weapons planned at the moment and two of them (Forge Gun and HMG) have no feedback damage. |
