I noticed people are just saying what they want to see, even things that would mean nothing to someone who never tried the game before. The question was about how to get new players, not about how to make current players happy. Example: I loved skirmish 1.0, but I don't see how adding it would attract thousands of new players; from their perspective it would just be another objective PVP mode added to an objective-based PVP game. Also, what the hell is up with people saying thing like hit detection and aiming? that isn't new content at all. |

The problem Dust has is that we don't actually want new players. If we had a huge influx of new players then they would see how crap the game is compared to their usual fotm and then ***** and whine and give Dust a lot of negative press.
Dust doesn't need negative press.
Like another user mentioned, this game will be like EVE where CCP makes something great of of something good. |

I'd say a combination of utilizing many of the ideas in the NPE thread somewhere in feedback and requests, making the gameplay run better/smoother overall, PvE to help ease the skill gap. Oh yeah and more content, there's thousands of things that could be added.
Sorry OP I couldn't just say one thing would bring in thousands of players ;) |

There is no single piece of new content that could bring in new players. Dust is critically panned. There is no singular addition you could pitch that would bring in thousands. Edit: apart from maybe re-doing the EVE connectivity pitch and actually backing it up.
Best you can angle for at this moment is stabilisation, aim for player retention if opening up an influx of new blood is not feasibly possible.
I would go with a new (good) game mode which is more of a focused team effort. PvE is a close second even if it doesn't quite sit right with me. |

And here is the core dilemma. What is DUST 514? MMORPG? MMOFPS? FPSRPG? RPGMMOFPS? No one knows. Don't even think CCP does. What is the use of a roadmap if there is no destination? It is meant to be a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing First Person Shooter.
Of course this is a work in progress. Currently it is not so Massive.
They are still working on refining the FPS combat mechanics, and the Role Playing component is limited because a lot of Racial variants of things like vehicles have not been added yet. Not to mention how limited communications are in the DUST with very poor in game mail, no web access to in game mail, and no private messaging on the forums. There is still a massive amount of work to be done.
To answer the original question, PVE would be the one thing that would bring in the most new members, because it would attract a different type of player. Of course it would have to have a reasonable amount of content to keep any of them. |

So you can turn every new player off of this game by pub stomping? Great way to increase player count.

And you know what? I like that Dust is not appealing to the masses. It's a niche game and it requires people who understand that. To gain more players would more than likely pull in hardcore BF and COD fans who play this game like they do those two. Who would complain even more and make threads/threats about leaving.
Plus, the full scope is not even realized yet for this game. The forum needs a class in decorum and tact when dealing with the devs. The game as a whole needs work and implementations that will take time. It also needs a dedicated community who can judge it objectively and suggest ideas that would better it.
In other words, we got plenty of in house things to do before we worry about bringing in a influx of players.
I've met some cool folks on these boards but nothing compares to the players in game. It's like night and day. On the forums, the majority sounds like whining brats. In game, the majority are excited and dedicated to the game. Heck, I'm starting to see familiar faces in the Caldari chat that I know play the game at least every day if not every other, like me.
I've said this numerous times, but I'm betting on the fact on how they pulled off EVE is how they will pull off Dust. In other words, we gotta let this baby simmer and raise it right.
7+ or 10years. for a game to get itself together. A GAME? ......then again that's those that actually think eve as the most exciting game since the good old days of playing that point and click face book vampire game.

Start pumping out maps. Make dozens of them. They can have elements of the old maps recombined in new ways. Make it so that different planets actually have different maps.
Strengthen PC. Make it so that EVE PI has to be contracted to Mercs to either guard PI to conquer planets for PI - you can make it so for example just in Molden Heath as not to upset the whole EVE economy too much. |

Fully agree. This generalized eve mentality and philosophy hasn't been doing THIS game any favors. Eve in itself is a great game and a significant part of DUST but they are different in nearly every way. |

So.. then nothing will change. except those eve players get the better deal. Don't think the majority of players who check out dust, a FPS game are thinking of EVE. even if it is in the name. wasn't the idea "DUST514 will bring thousands of players into eve"? Tho I'm sure now it's eve players that are mostly playing this game.
But I have started to take into thought, as to what some on here and in other games have been saying about CCP.

PvE wouldn't really fix the game at least not at first, it could potentially kill the game actually.
now this is just a hypothetical, so take it with a grain of salt.
game population is about 800-900 active playing games not afk at any given time.
if PVE was introduced I suspect most new players would run to that rather then getting pub stomped, old players would then stick to playing PVP once they got bored of beating on dumb AI's.
this would leave pvp format as nothing but hardcore proto pub stompers if I was to to take a guess I'd say that is about 35% of the current pvp population but then how and when will the lowly newbie get into pvp? short answer they probably won't. any new player who tried to get into pvp would likely face an army of proto stompers
killing the pvp population slowly over time, and eventually the game.
player retention might go up, and I'm hoping for that result, but f their is no encouragement to move to the "more rewarding" pvp formats, then the game will lose both the pvp and pve minded players eventually. |

PVE would allow new players a chance to train and partially catch up in SP before going into PVP, and make them less likely to get stomped in PVP. Its better to fight a proto army after training on drones and having gained some SP then to fight the proto army without the practice and SP gained. If properly advertised, PVE would attract more than enough players to more than make up for the decreased percentage of PVP players. |

true it could work that way, ideally. but it could work out that new players will just end up being locked out of pvp.
pve will be easy, no matter how they do it, AI's are always easy to beat down, and the new player will be in for a rude awakening when they step into pvp against 26 pvp trained pros with 30 million sp, and that's assuming they even try to bring a squad. |

Having ALL racial dropsuits, vehicles and weapons in game. Having actually 1000's of maps like we were promised instead of the stupid socket system that is just the same map with different buildings to look at. Having good game modes and not this boring POS skirmish 2.0 we have atm Having player controlled MCC gameplay
4 things but I believe that is the necessary things for the game to thrive. PVE could not interest me less, it would be the same old thing but just shooting dumb AI bots over and over. Would become repetitive even faster than the PVP. |
