I think the opposite is the case, they aren't a necessity now, though they are standard on many fits. With 25% PG by skill you would never need one.

I lost two tanks over the last days invading into the redzone and attacking sniper tanks, both times 1-2 shots were missing to finish the job and my timer went of, before I could drive out. Tomorrow I will drive in again, if there is a tank hiding...
