I seem to recall a dev saying it's basically deeply hard coded that death is recorded at the point of incapacitation. Not saying its a bad idea, but I think it's a technical impossibility without extensive effort.

Damage is fine (though I'm a Commando most of the time so my view is a little skewed), for me it's the range that's an issue. I pretty much need to be spooning the other guy before I can melee him, so I just avoid it altogether.
