They used to have 100 damage + 1.25% melee / nova knife bonus. Now they have 120 base damage and +5% nova knife per level. You effectively get 4 levels of 'melee' damage for free built right into the suit and you keep the NK damage.

Assaults aren't supposed to be ewar monsters. Cal Logi's can fare passably with ewar though. Assaults are murder-kings when in an appropriate squad. If you play solo you should use a scout.
