So if the squad leader cancels while it is searching for battle, sometimes it still queues everyone else in the squad up. They then can't cancel out. They have to wait until actually in battle or on the warbarge and then quit from there.

I've had this happen to me. Thought it was a feature. I assumed we had one last hit point representing our more squishy components. One more hit from anything and it's respawn. At least that's what I assumed. If not, yep, had this bug several times.
