The answer is on the forum although I can't find it now. To paraphrase; Devs said that all 4 races will have thier own versions of the assault rifle. All the Assault Rifles will have 4 versions; a main version and 3 attempts to mimic the tactic...

This game is no were near ready for air units yet. Air units are useful for projecting force over wide areas. Tiny maps + Swarmlaunchers = death from below.
