Are you sure it's not your display autoadjusting the brightness? (Some "dynamic" or "cinema" settings are really crap at this) I don't have any trouble with maps being too bright or too dark on my display.

The arc is fine. It lets you throw over player-sized obstacles without looking into the sky and it lands nearby. Having it thrown straight forward where we aim will prevent using grenades for what they are meant as - softening enemies behind cover.
