Here are some tanking tips that may help. These re some things that I have notices when I have gone tanking.
My fit was a Madrugar with Heavy Supplemental Shield Extender and a converse light shield booster for the high powered. For the low powered I have 180mm nanofiber armor plates, a light IGL armor repairer, and PG upgradesX2 My turrets were all standard Blasters Now here, my HP totaled around 10,000, and this is all standard. You can edit this to your liking.
The reason I put Shields on a Maddy was because nobody would expect it. People can throw AV Andes at it and wonder why it isn't even scratching my shields, the only downside is that for the extra armor, I had to sacrifice a heavy armor repper. This means you have to be on alert for forge gunners, and once you start taking damage head to cover. Now I know this may not work for some people, this is just what worked for me. Since came up with this tank, I have not lost any (maybe one) in 5 matches. This fit costs a little over 400,000 ISK, so you can break even or make a profit if you are careful. Now, I will move on to the tips.
Tip #1: You are not invincible!
Your tank is similar to a heavy, fat, slow, and an easy target that can pack a punch. Now just like a heavy, you need to be smart, don't charge into a bad situation. You are most likely going to end up dead without support.
Tip #2: Be careful who you kill
This sounds odd, but if you kill a guy with a nice, expensive, proto suit, he may want revenge. Also, if you kill someone near theair spawn point/CRU/objective, and you're still there, he will probably spawn in with an AV fit.
Tip #3: Use cover and know when to retreat
This is a little self explanatory. If you see swarms or the glow of a forge gun, move behind cover where you can't get hit. I know this can be frustrating, but it can save you a tank.
Tip #4: Keep moving
This makes it a little more difficult for forge gunners at range to hit you. This also reduces the chance for being hit multiple times by the same person. Now there may be that one forge gunner that is at the best place that can hit almost anywhere on the map, but if that is the case, try to kill him and then retreat to safety.
Tip #5: Timing is key
This is one of the most key ingredients to some good tanking. Don't call a tank once you spawn in for the first time. Observe what kind of AV the enemy has. If it is low tier, go for it. If it is proto, don't risk it. Also, call in a tank when there is a lot of heated infantry battle. Lend your team a helping hand, also, you won't sustain as much damage because the battle is going on with the infantry. Tanks are supposed to be a support role apparently, so use it that way.
I know tankers have it tough, I can't imagine what losing a Million and a half ISK tank would be like, but please acknowledge these tips, and I know a few you guys already know.
These are just my two cents. Thank you. |

Oh they might say they already know but in practice they dont, most of them are the type that want to park a tank with a blaster turret next to a CRU and rack up free kills Of course when that happens the scenario you explained in tip 2 happens and I spawn back in with my AV fitting and hunt them down |

Buffer fit is generally a good idea(you can max out Mad to have 12.4HP), but we have Armor Repair bug now, and it is better to have Heavy AR with triple hardeners those days . |

Yes, I know. But if it is a Gunnlogi with missile, it will have to get trough my shields, if it has a blaster, then it has to get through my armor. Only weakness is railgun. |

Im sure your fit works quite well vs infantry, but as was said already that will last vs tanks with damage mods, proto turrets and heatsinks. although if you can watch out for other tanks and just recall you might be ok. |

You know, you do have a point. So does Weingarten. I haven't encountered any tanks yet. Thank you for the heads up. But what I really wanted to talk about were the tips. |

Anti-tank fit. if you need to pop an active heat sink to take down infantry, then you should just give up tanking and get on the AR bandwagon. In a tank battle, the heat sink could be the difference between winning and losing. i run one on every fit. great thread by the way. us tankers need more love. |

Ya'll think you're so good bc none of you play PC and have not come across the A-list tankers; we are in the best corps for a reason. Want a good tank battle? Fight Ancient Exiles, Outer Heaven, Internal Error, Red Star, or Team Players....or Murder Cakes of Doom. To the OP: Your fit sucks and if you understood why, I would respect you at least a little bit because you have not taken your tank to Excel and found out exactly how effective it is- if you did, you wouldn't use it. |

Things that are wrong:
1) shields on maddy = stupid 2) no heat sink = stupid 3) nanofiber 180's are pointless. drop that, use the poly ****. if it's proto cannon, use 2 pg upgrades, if its standard, use 1 and then use 2 hardeners 4) no hardenener = epic fail
Relearn how to tank and come back when you know something. |

Blah just ruffling your feathers kiddo. The only thing I know about tankers like you and earl is that it is required to suck up to you pony brats to get you to man up and actualy play. Both of you would find every excuse in the book NOT to play. But didnt you say, and I quote "waah I dont want to play anymore, I HATE PC!!!" I guess if your team is getting easy W's you will play, but once the losses start coming.. so will the excuses.
amirite?

I am a casual player with only 7 million sp. I can't afford to spec into higher mods. I use what I have. All you guys that were spoonfed information from big corps wonder why scrubs and bluedots suck. Its because they are told what is right and aren't allowed to do anything that they want. Also, people instead of trying to help others try to put them down in saying you suck. Tankers are almost always redliners. I wanted to be different. People like to destroy anything that they can't get a grasp on. They think new is bad. I will edit my tank fit with the information that I have collected and create a better fit. Thank you guy for positive and negative feedback. |

I'm actually enjoying using my poor Sica as a glorified turret sniper. I know that I have absolutely zero chance of going up against any of the regular tankers (based on the fact that I still have to use militia equipment and have a level 1 railgun turret) but there is no greater feeling than actually forcing these roided-up tanks into retreating by keeping my distance and hiding behind cover. I may not get the kill...but I'll do my best to make sure you don't get one, either. |

LUGMOS, I won't call myself a tanker so perhaps my opinion doesn't count for much here. Like you I prefer the "try and see" method of things rather than recycling whatever fit someone says is best.
Don't worry about the "elite" tankers or any of the other Dust experts out there. Play, learn, refine, but most importantly have fun. I appreciate your efforts at least. |

here is how you become considered a top tanker in three easy steps. step 1: build an armor tank with a railgun step 2: engage in very simple tank fights in which you are either situated on a hill or you simply peek and shoot. step 3: have a k/d of roughly 5 and lower.
now you look like the self proclaimed top tankers in dust. I forgot about step 4: while on forums preform oral sex to current top tankers.

hey I run tanks and drops. forgeguns have ruined drops, swarms can be managed, but the assault forgegun has too much damage for the speed in which in can be fired. not being able to hold a charge is hardly a draw back with sucha high fire rate, and if anything not holding charge increases dps. That being said I do not want to see av nerfed heavily as I do enjoy av vs tank fights.

Hi LUGMOS
Your tips are very much appreciated, I have just started skilling into tanks and appreicate the tips and experiences you have posted on your use of tanks. I would also prefer a lowcost HAV build as my blood presure would not like loosing 1mill isk tanks. 400k isk is reasonable and the isk can be regained in just a few matches. |

I do not agree with you on #2, only speaking from my view as infantry. I will respawn in my AV suits if I am shot down by tanks, I am no very good at AV, but others are much better. And running in a cheap tank with low resistance I agree that it is better to keep a low profile and acknowledge that some players could spawn with proto AV that would destroy my cheap tank in no time. 3 its a stupod idea to put shield extenders on a maddy as it would be stupid to put armour reps on a gunlogi.

Thank you for fixing my famously bad spelling but hybrid tanking is most definitely daft untill the ammar or mini tanks arrive then we shall see some cool fits but at the moment fitting a maddy with shield extenders and boosters is madness . The maddys should be armoir tanked to the max including hardners with heat syncs and or nitro in the luxury high slotts sticking a heavy or heavy suplamental shield extender in the highs eats allot of the pg that could be used on armour reps ect. |

That said, I request knowledge. I'm sticking with shield tanking (I know armor is superior, I'll adapt or wait til CCP fixes it) so to the other shield tankers: What fits do you find best? Would you recommend higher ehp with two extenders, or one extender and a rep, since we can't fit all three? And would the large fragmented missile launcher be worth the effort for infantry suppression, or are blasters better? |
