That's actually because of height mapping. Basically the terrain is just a large picture with white, black and gray bumps. Where things fall in the terrain is percentile based. Here's a quick overview if you care. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08ZKqAajRFw |

Skill Ceiling
The distance between awful and top performance.
I view this was lowered because I have seen top end pilots perform and I am not impressed, as in I do not regard them as a threat large enough to swap to AV and when I do swap to av to deal with them I should not be viewing it as free War Points and kills and griefing their wallets. I also know enough that I do not see pilots getting any better at their craft that what they can explore at top of the dropship game is utterly useless. The old style dropships had an extraordinary high ceiling because the constant threat of other aircraft and heavier targets on the ground proved to be ultimate challenges that majority of the time the drop ship nor the obstacle can guarantee the outcome. This is why I ultimately think the skill ceiling was lowered, because one side can always guarantee a result and the drop ship pilots are beyond helpless to change that as there is no magical set of moves or skill improvements on their end that would truly save them in the scenarios they face.
Skill Slope
The difficulty in climbing up to the skill ceiling. There is an extraordinarily thick barrier between learning to drop ship, while price is its own barrier I would rather see dropships match their performance with the sticker price. its very unforgiving and ultimately hard, while I do not normally mind this if the skill ceiling was high enough but currently its not.
My challenge to the strike wing is that if you installed the turrets and MCRU off a dropship, how useful are you still? If you can get the dropship to the point that without these two things and the team still wants a dedicated dropship pilot on the team the entire battle, then you done a good job on getting dropships fixed. |

Is this tantamount to asking "What is the value of an air transport vehicle in DUST 514"? While a legitimate question I don't believe aircraft in the game need to be limited to that role or need to have success in that role as a starting point for all their designs. Did I just misunderstand your comment? That is a great starting point for what is intended to be an aerial transport vehicle. We will one day have bombers and already have assault dropships focusing on air to ground attack but regular dropships should primarily be able to serve the transport function. Anything else should be considered an extra bonus. |

I am sometimes bad with words but in a way yes it was a bit misunderstood.
My point is that dropships should for all sake of feel homage and heritage be still be able to do the role its predecessor did very well without extra tools. Take a bunch of troops and equipment from point a to b in one piece.
The Spearow class dropship from the caldari army was very handy at this in carrying 50 troops, being able to get in and out easily up until the clones were brought in.
The viper should be the evolutionary step up from the sparrow. Added weapons, defenses and severe cut back on passengers to minimize losses increase survivability on the field. The main homage however should still remain at heart still a transport ship at heart being able to land pick up people and get them out. The older styled dropships early in the beta followed this very well however the fact it was too easy to crush people made it a constant annoyance for snipers and roof huggers. |

The main problem with dropships is that the have no defined role yet.
Logistic LAVs with their built in spawn point are superseded by cheap uplink point spawn. Vipers are little more than a cheap throwaway vehicle to gain high points. Assault dropships (which I personally have a lot of success with) are fun. But I dunno if they are worth the cost.
Redlining rail tanks are a big problem for pilots. Personally I think aircraft should be able to enter the enemy red zone so we can at least harass them.
I was looking forward to weather effects in the hope that it could provide a form of cover for aircraft.
Another alternative are maps that are deliberately designed to promote aircraft gameplay (like I imagine gas planets will) |

I won't be able to make that and even if I did I wouldn't be talking much and doing more note taking instead, but my not-so-short stint as an ex-top pilot before they changed the controls/physics.
I know there are quite a few pilots very 'passionate' about the current controls but I must warn you, Elitism is not an excuse to not change something. For example the calls for forge gun nerfs are coming despite how high of a skill barrier it is to get good with forge gunning infantry.
I miss all the player stories of being a dropship pilot
I missed dog fighting, where the best solution to take out a drop ship was another drop ship. :(
[.......]
I want the old stories to return.
I also really miss dropships being an accessible, sensible, viable vehicle. I remember the day after the update, trying to fly, crashing, staying level headed and going through 10, then 20 ships (not all crashes, some just got shot down, but mostly crashes) and giving up. But I didn't get frustrated, surely something would be done and enough people would make enough of a fuss to fix it, I'd just wait it out.
And then here we are still.
As is they are the most difficult vehicle to pilot in the entire Eve universe that I know of, and when a Titan or any other spaceship is easier than a dropship something is off. I see LAVs miraculously righting themselves after flipping over and taking no damage, killing players with hundreds of health by running them down and taking no damage, only taking a measly 100 or so shield damage from hitting a wall (instead of going into armor like they ought to, the shield would be essentially hit twice by said wall and then by the actual vehicle propelled by its inertia on the inside, and the vehicle hitting the shield damaging itself, because physics I believe, but anyway), tanks that can only be dented by a forge gun or a particularly lucky flux grenade, and then these "flying" coffins.
In the last month I've seen maybe 3 pilots (of <20, that sparsity speaking for itself) who didn't immediately die after liftoff (but hundreds of LAVs, and scores of tanks all doing fine). Even they were just barely keeping in the air as players with nothing better to do took pot shots at them. Of these three only one, an AUR assault ship if I'm not mistaken, actually managed to accomplish ANYTHING before falling back and disappearing (suspect it was shot down).
Without ease of use, without accessibility, dropships become tedious, stratifying, and meaningless instead of being fun (the goal of gaming if I'm not mistaken).
Anyway, on topic, I consider dropships to supersede Pilot suits, and pilot suits to need better dropships before they can have a legitimate and fulfilling role.
Also on topic, what if racial role suits provided bonuses to piloting? Maybe in auxiliary (and to a lesser degree), or in replacement of pilot suits (then augmented by vehicle skills). I feel like the idea of pilot suits is nifty, but that it could become another SP-sink for vehicle users, and personally I liked how back when skills like Engineering helped with suits and with vehicles making for less redundancy, then augment that with some nerfs (like physics on LAVs, flux AV grenades with a reduced payload), working out a height ceiling for weapons (both ways) so when dropships retreat up they're out of play like how LAVs and HAVs can, HAVs having a more realistic, larger scan profile that can be detected even beyond effective range).
That way career pilots have the freedom to still engage in infantry combat in a meaningful way instead of getting boxed into also bringing out their Airships/HAVs/LAVs and subsequently running low on ISK (vehicle prices being as last I checked). |

I miss all the player stories of being a dropship pilot I missed dog fighting, where the best solution to take out a drop ship was another drop ship. :( When was the last time any of you flown up with a Blaster armed dropship to engage 3-4 other air targets simultaneously and win? I miss using my dropships beams to spot and weed out snipers, cleaning roofs, and my gunners where able to do their job marvelously because they didn't get sniped out of the position in the first second of 'stabilizing' for target. When was the last time any of you did? I miss having a full dropship, and making a full dropship useful. The power to quickly take a small strike team from alpha to bravo in a very quick manner dropping off that squad then my gunners providing close air support. Then once the situation is dealt with, land and pick or even have a small fight between allies of who gets to hitch a ride back onto my dropship. When was the last time any of you help 'shape' and 'control' the battlefield? When was the last time the hostile team actually feared any of you? To the point they did not wander far from areal cover? and as an AV guy as well since the change in controls I can only recall two (that's right TWO) instances of a dropship giving me problems, primarily because I couldn't get to a position where I was afforded two shots against the target without getting mowed down by hostile infantry. All this lost so a drop ship could do a 'barrel roll'. Why did they lower the skill ceiling (the height reaction achievable) and steepen the cliff at the same time is beyond me. Dropships went from one of the easiest vehicles to operate to the hardest and with all the changes thrown in are no longer doing anything remotely to their job sake. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXna2Jnu1xsDropship where functionally a weird but working hybrid of attack, scout, and transport chopper back with the old control scheme. Transport (cept the one way trip to a roof) has died off, Nobody dares uses them to scout anymore, and attack role is rarely pulled off proper as AA keeps them too far away. Though I am willing to fault AA being too powerful with the current controls thats an extraordinarily thin line between paper and invincible with the ability to survive an engagement would result in a drop ship that just laughs off the attacks as it weaves in and out of a defense envelope under current controls which was a real possibility and continue to remain near useless. The older dropships did not have the option of leaving the defense envelope that easily because of their slower top speeds. and even at times where forced to remain in the bubble because trying to leave certain parts of that bubble would have resulted in death from a railgun, forge gun, more swarms thus it became a living puzzle on how to tear apart with your gunners the entire battlefield to safely exit the defense bubble. While the new controls do have their place, I feel they're more at home on a real attack vtol craft armed with forward mounted rocket pods and heavier guns. A craft you want maintained CAS to be difficult with. I want the old stories to return.
Im sorry but I disagree with almost every point you make. I dont have time to get into specifics, but if dropship controls are reverted back to EZ mode I will quit this game immediately. |

four things that would fix dropships, for the most part.
1. Armor buff for Gallente, Shield buff for Caldari dropships (maybe an extra 600 hp would be fair). 2. Fix the bolas guys, i know it isn't the only way dropships die, but it's just something we shouldn't have to worry about. death by invisible flying RDV. 3. Small ISK reduction (200,000.00 isk would be fair, as long as it's with these fixes) 4. redefine the role of dropships (are assault dropships actually supposed to be combat oriented, or just self defence, logistics dropships, option for squad only mcru, possibly the idea with the redline, to anti redline snipe/tank. |
