Anita Hardone wrote:Basically. My example of a very good community rep would be DERebecca from Digital Extremes who have been working on the game "Warframe". she pops in on ingame chat at least once a week to just talk to people, very active on the forums, makes threads asking what people think and usually has a criteria for people to vote on etc. Arranges live streams with devs that last 2 hours plus on a somewhat regular basis.
She does alot more than that when compared to whoever our rep is, but the point is... she does work.
What does our Rep do... Seem to be more passively lurking the forums and reading threads, then collating that data for internal consumption. And putting out a weekly update. So 80% CCP's "Community Person" in meetings 5 days a week and 20% CCP's Rep to the Community whenever they get the chance.
I think what you're looking for is an awesome forum mod who is extremely interactive. CCP seems to prefer telling all of their devs to get on the forums and "talk to folks" and some devs are better at that than others since, well, it's just another thing to do on their list of things to do at work that day.
As it is a "job" they answer to their boss before a bunch of people with avatars on a forum, so I guess this is how they're choosing to go about it. I've seen it done other ways, but meh... it's their train to crash. |

And 'over sharing' in the development process is a double-edged sword as others have noted. Things have to be blessed off before they are passed to the community, and that is all bureaucratic overhead that takes away man minutes and hours from other development priorities... and CCP has had to do some really crazy acrobatics and I think really really fundamentally change the direction they were planning to go as far as dev priorities in the short term and as all of that is getting fleshed out, there's nothing to pass to the community because they don't know for sure yet themselves. As far as getting our opinions... heh we're all very good at sharing and the feedback section is full of opinions.
But yeah, it's a crapshoot. They're busy. |

If the Community Rep is 80% of the time relaying info in meetings over the community... then doesnt that make the CPM moot? When i hear the title Community Representative... i think of someone who puts themselves out there and works with the players and actually seems like they like their job and the things their employer is making. Ya see, the community rep takes the community FROM the CPM, and then DELIVERS the community to CCP. I'm a PEOPLE PERSON, OK?!?!?! |
