Basically. My example of a very good community rep would be DERebecca from Digital Extremes who have been working on the game "Warframe". she pops in on ingame chat at least once a week to just talk to people, very active on the forums, makes threads asking what people think and usually has a criteria for people to vote on etc. Arranges live streams with devs that last 2 hours plus on a somewhat regular basis.
She does alot more than that when compared to whoever our rep is, but the point is... she does work.

What does our Rep do... Seem to be more passively lurking the forums and reading threads, then collating that data for internal consumption. And putting out a weekly update. So 80% CCP's "Community Person" in meetings 5 days a week and 20% CCP's Rep to the Community whenever they get the chance.
I think what you're looking for is an awesome forum mod who is extremely interactive. CCP seems to prefer telling all of their devs to get on the forums and "talk to folks" and some devs are better at that than others since, well, it's just another thing to do on their list of things to do at work that day.
As it is a "job" they answer to their boss before a bunch of people with avatars on a forum, so I guess this is how they're choosing to go about it. I've seen it done other ways, but meh... it's their train to crash. |

And 'over sharing' in the development process is a double-edged sword as others have noted. Things have to be blessed off before they are passed to the community, and that is all bureaucratic overhead that takes away man minutes and hours from other development priorities... and CCP has had to do some really crazy acrobatics and I think really really fundamentally change the direction they were planning to go as far as dev priorities in the short term and as all of that is getting fleshed out, there's nothing to pass to the community because they don't know for sure yet themselves. As far as getting our opinions... heh we're all very good at sharing and the feedback section is full of opinions.
But yeah, it's a crapshoot. They're busy. |

An awesome mod? Ive never met a mod i actually liked. lol
If the Community Rep is 80% of the time relaying info in meetings over the community... then doesnt that make the CPM moot? When i hear the title Community Representative... i think of someone who puts themselves out there and works with the players and actually seems like they like their job and the things their employer is making. |

The CPM just hosted an AMA, which I feel was quite considerate of them. They certainly participate in forum discussions, if not as much as possible, then at least as much as they can without becoming a troll. I know Cazeredon (the French guy, if I spelt that wrong) has an awesome website for the French community to get information on DUST. It looks like they're doing as much as they can whilst under the NDA CCP placed on them. |

So... basically they are getting the CPM's (assuming they are not paid) to do some of the things that a community rep would do. Only for free? |

What use would community rep be, beyond what the CPM does?
How close do you want them to get with the community, before they turn into one of us?
It's better they remain objective. How can we criticise their actions if they're friendly with us? How can we provide objective feedback if we know we're hurting their feelings by posting it?
Look at the threads now. The callouts for CCP Blam! only ended when we found out Wolfman had taken over vehicles. And now we're discussing how crap a job he'll do to them. Do you really think we'd say that if they were as involved as this dear Rebecca of Warframe? Do you think we could provide such stinging 'feedback' if we knew these guys were only human?
Besides, who are we to them? We spend our days on this forum criticising every move they make, then now we complain they don't want to talk to us. Hah, big surprise. I'm only here because I like procrastinating. |

It's what we got for now. The majority of the community's maturity levels are not that high either. Criticism often starts off a little nasty and comparisons are thrown around like hot cakes. Their ranting subsides when devs contribute to thread...only for a little while. Then its all jokes and laughs then. Absurd.
I would like to see more interaction between the community and devs...but I fear that "channel" will be abused. |

My bad. I'v seen new Devs responding today. CPMs claim they try to encourage CCP Devs to communicate more often with us...
Reading from the links i provided, there was some positive shake-up at CCP. It appears they really care for DUST and try to fix it asap... And communicate more... Look at list of dev post: https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=search&devbadge=1&gmbadge=1 Quite a lot lately... |

Ya see, the community rep takes the community FROM the CPM, and then DELIVERS the community to CCP. I'm a PEOPLE PERSON, OK?!?!?! |

Only "sometimes"... well, mostly in the weekend, but even them you always have a GM ready to take action. |

I blame the fact that I have not yet evolved the ability to forgo sleep completely. However, early experiments have been promising.

And the community does? They are doing fine, we demanded quicker updates and we got them and more feedback and got it. This community needs to step back for a minute and take a deep breath. They are working hard for us and it is a difficult job. All this constant negativity aimed at them is unwarranted and detrimental to the process of making games. This community needs do some growing up and learn patients. |

I work 3rd shift and I know all about sleep deprivation experiments. It is probably the reason some of my post seem bi polar. I am currently on 4 hours of sleep with about 10 awake and it seems to work OK. It's rough sometimes but usually ends up being kind of fun because I end up feeling like a drunken zombie when I get home to log into New Eden. |

It'd be nice if we had a bit more interaction from time to time. The void of forumspace gets lonely without direction. |
