I think CCP should give new mercs 2-4 mill sp to start with. That way they can at least feel halfway good against all protostompers. |

... not sure i agree with this, but at the same time new players could use a boost up.
- i disagree with giving new players more starting SP because if you put it all in the wrong places, youll hate yourself. its better to get a general idea of the game before you go throwing SP around without knowing how itll work out on the field. the 500k sp mark is an excelent start, i can make a full fit basic frame suit with a GEK in with just under 500k SP, no militia items.
- but back to your point, newberries do need a bit of a push out the door, maybe instead of increasing the ammount of starter SP, increase the SP multiplier from the Instant Battle Academy to help with skilling. this way, you still have to learn what your SP choices get you, but you come out of the academy a bit better prepaired. |

I disagree u should have to earn it and they have to increase the SP per week or remove the cap cause as time goes on its gonna be horrible for new players idk why they ever put it in the game |

It's a bit more complicated than simply starting with more. As you can see by the crying noobs around here they'd just waste it all without having a clue how they want to play.
Here's my idea.

good sir, i actually really like that idea. it sounds like a coding nightmare, but in theory.... its actually well thoughtout, balanced, and reasonable. i assume SP boosters would apply on top of the increased SP gains? |

1-2 million extra for a newbie will do very little against my 12 mills & experience. In 6 months time I will be closer to 20 mills and a bigger gap between myself and a rookie.
So you see.. Adding a couple of mills for a new player doesn-¦t really hold water. |

so heres a question, do you enjoy your perch on top of the SP mountain and want to stay up there, or would you like to see a new SP system where new people have to opportunity to work hard and catch up?
im not starting a "lets rework SP cap in this thread" question, its just a bit of personal curiosity.
personally, i REALLY enjoy my 14mil SP, but i also want newberries to have the chance to climb up to, and maybe surpass me if they have the drive to do so. |

And how much more SP do noobies get in 5 years? How about a decade down the road? Are they expected to play years (play an FPS for years!) to earn the SP vets have?
Will vets play for years?
This game isn't EVE; it can't simply grow as an FPS if it wants to last as long as EVE.
Which is why I've been constantly arguing that the SP system is totally wrong right now. It doesn't feel like progression, it feels like a grind. It doesn't feel like a game, it feels like a chore, to earn SP.
If all items were initially unlocked and SP was simply there to provide bonuses to certain items (thus keeping specialisation alive), then it'd be so much less frustrating for new players and so much easier for CCP to implement new items. They don't have to worry about the community jumping down their throats for another respec because the new stuff is so cool and the old stuff is boring now.
Furthermore, by increasing ISK costs for advanced and prototype gear, we don't have to have a matchmaking system because players will decide on their own not to run expensive gear when they can easily lose it.
It's like highsec in EVE. There's nothing stopping ganks from happening initially, but CONCORD will arrive eventually.
But that's the beauty of New Eden. It gives you that choice to grief, even at your own expense.
Make that apply to DUST. Make prototype gear expensive as hell, but still allow players to run it. However now, if they die to a remote explosive, or a forge gun, or get run over, MAKE IT HURT. Make them instantly decide to leave the game or switch to cheaper gear.

I-¦m enjoying my SP mountain on and off yes. Catching up is gaining skills on the battlefield. The fancy suits & gear is a bonus.
And no. I don-¦t think the system should offer massive grinding for newberries. Build up your skills and gear slowly but surely.

SP shouldn't be the point of this game. SP is a granular leveling mechanic which is there as a content release valve. Proposing that new players with more SP is like proposing new players in WOW should start at level 5.
Another thing is the Skill tree. Because it lacks fundamental structure, a new player with 5 million SP is very liable to spending it all in one place: after all, they still only get 250k ISK, enough for about 3-4 low tier skill books.
Instead, propose accelerated SP gain for new players until a certain level; I'd say 1.6 million SP. A 2x rate on both passive and active is enough, though I think SP gain in general should be moved more towards passive, with active playing a smaller role. Incidentally, the active SP cap should be rolling, and without a soft cap (again, SP gain should never be the primary point of playing the game).
This retains the qualities of the content release valve, and doesn't give the player more SP than he/she knows what to do with. |

start them as they currently are, but remove their cap until they hit 10mil SP.
all players at this point should have this, so if you don't have 10mil, you should have a pile of 'bonus' SP to earn til you reach it.
this will narrow the skill point gap considerably, and at the VERY least remove the main excuse so many have about why they aren't competitive

When I started playing it was the beginning of triple SP week by coincidence, so that was pretty cool and gave me a nice head-start.
So... Triple SP for all newbs until they reach a certain number of SP? Why not?
Well one good argument against it would be that newbies would get used to the higher SP gain, and it could feel deceitful if it's suddenly lowered. Maybe that could be solved by communicating very clearly how it works and what to expect. |

Giving newbros extra SP wont fix the stomping problem. If anything it will just cause them to spec themselves poorly quickly. The entire population is just too concentrated and too bored right now.
1) There should be a militia version of EVERY SINGLE gun and dropsuit, so people can actually try these things before they invest blindly.
2) There should be militia only (or maybe STD only) High Sec contracts available. Sort of like the Academy, but anyone with a viable suit would be allowed into these low priority areas. This would establish a permanent "practice" arena. Newbros and Vets would still go head to head, but they would be artificially corrected to have the same level of gear. Newbros can learn tactics while Vets develop new tactics.
3) Low Sec and Null Sec need to offer high end content, to draw away the stompers. Heavy EVE ties in this area. 5 to 10mil minimum SP to gain clearance. |

1) I think a better solution would be changing how the Skill Tree unlocks new content. Require players to diversify to a certain extent before they can specialize. This could manifest itself as the skill Sidearm Operation unlocking all Standard level sidearms. The player can play around with those to determine which he/she likes best. Then the player can invest into the specialization skills to gain access to higher level weapons. Establishing a sense of progress through the skill tree would do wonderful things for the meta. Less players sticking to one thing they invested all their SP into, more players using things they need to skill through to get to their desired specialization; more players using what they feel is appropriate for the given situation when their specialization is at a disadvantage.
2) There was a proposal somewhere to limit what players could use in a match by the security status of a system.
3) No need for clearance for the same reason as PC not needing it; the best players naturally agglomerate where the most rewarding features are present. Agree on the high end content though. |

i think once they leave the battle academy they get 1mil sp. because it only takes about 2-3mil to make a decent advanced fit. which is good enough to compete with in normal pub match, well unless you want to get in a tank but that is a different issue completely. |

The only problem I have with this is that it flattens the progression quite a bit. Light Weapons, for example, would open up eight STD level weapons? If you include mines as weapons, that's half the available content in one skill with many more Light Weapons on the horizon. Sure, you go and specialize after that, but with so little content to begin with I have a problem with one skill unlocking so much. And that idea really does eliminate the idea of militia gear in the first place.
Militia gear is supposed to be the spec-free version, available to all. They typically have the exact same stats as STD anyway just with higher CPU/PG. It wouldn't be a problem to take every STD piece, add fitting cost, and releasing it for general consumption. As opposed to changing the skill tree function again.
Did you know there is a militia Heavy suit but no Militia HMG? Just a Forge Gun. So to even TRY the HMG to see if you enjoy it, you need to spec Weaponry to Level 5, to open Heavy Weapons Level 1, to open HMG Level 1. 180,000 SP just to get the very first taste of HMG.
Full militia gear sets are one of the easiest things that CCP can do to make the game more approachable to new players. "This is the content, see what you like and go with it" |

Takes far too long to become competitive as it is. When we get expanded dropsuit options and weapons there will still be loads of content to unlock even if they start with double or triple the SP. |

Skill Points mean nothing, I still run pubs in militia or std gear and get top of the board. 99% of people using proto gear in pubs are awful at this game |
