We are on Tranquility which is the main server, not one of the test servers.
I can agree it really doesn't matter to me personally; but the thing is, what matters to you and I isn't a factor. |

/c Funny how that works, eh.
They're trying to make the game look populated since they've got a 5 year plan (at least). That's also the reason why there're more regular store front updates than fixes/ dev blogs (let alone communication).
It's not about the Dust 514 population being "part of New Eden". You're not fooling anybody.
Why post numbers in the first place, Saber? I've got no idea. Maybe so they can claim that they've managed to get a higher number of players every year like they did with EVE during the last 10 years? |

It was called a "bug" by CCP last time it happened, now what is the excuse? Is it a strategy? Is it a cover up?
Is it just to falsely lead new players into thinking that many people play dust?
It really is a sleezy way to pretend you have alot of players, when we all know we haven't broke 5k in like a month.
I say set it back to dust population and stop covering the numbers up. |

Ask CCP, not us.
They however chose to show them and once it started dropping they "hid" them.
I think it also acts to keep people. If we saw the number constantly dropping everytime we logged on we may just say enough and move on.
Anyway I dont care either way too much but really dont want to hear them bragging about numbers of accounts or you telling the forum about CCP not being able to help us on issues quickly because of the massive numbers of the userbase. |

My guess is that some people in CCP want to emphasise Dust player count, others want to emphasise total New Eden numbers.
When Dust numbers were low and dropping, the "New Eden" lobby claimed victory and had it changed.
Then forums exploded and the PR guys said "help, bad karma". The "Dust only" lobby claimed victory and changed it back again.
Several internal CCP arguments later, the "New Eden" lobby wins over the decision makers and here we are.
As for why they show anything at all: because its CCP and (despite what we all like to believe) their corporate culture is one of openness. They provide database dumps, APIs, Wikis, dev blogs, etc. However, sharing information is rarely without a cost, and the fact that we are here in this thread complaining about the information they are sharing with us is just another example of that.. |

They hide the true numbers of players on dust so it will not show how many have left it. We need expansion fast, think about this how many true players are there versus players with multiple accounts. I want this game to succeed but with battle front 3 around the corner and if the rumors are true Dust is in for a real shake up, so get moving Dust the clock is ticking. |

Going with Dust 514 on PS3 was a massive f-Ķup in the first place. With all it's limitations Dust cannot become what CCP wants it to be. Even if they move on to PS4 and PC, they still have to support PS3 eventually.
You know the funny thing is: Almost everyone goes like this. I want Dust to be successful and fun, but it's not there yet. People said the same thing about EVE Online and for the majority it isn't fun yet either (10 years later).
It's more interesting to read about EVE, watch about EVE and talk about EVE... than actually playing it. The console world however is different, people wont stick around 10 years. They'll quickly move on as we can see.
One of the reasons why Dust only has a 5 year plan, currently. Not even the Devs are convinced. The Shanghai office is a joke anyway. A massive lack of people to support this "idea", let alone skills. |

Why did they ? good question .. let me guess;
They thought that will be 10,000 players in Dust after a week, and then they realize that will be only about 3,000 by the end of the summer.
Something like that, right ? |

I think they had over 10.000 at one point. Probably another day for the history book.
Of course they look pretty stupid now with sub 5k while 1.2 is out and gave a sneak peak of 1.3. Yet, the game doesn't even have all suits in it... Heavy still missing the racials i.e. and they're trying to balance it, lol.

So after weeks of silence, I take this is by design? To show fudged numbers in Dust about pilot + mercs, but in EVE only show pilots while still being "one server, one universe"?
Considering how the CPM kicked your ass with their statement I strongly urge you to reconsider all the lying. |

Considering how the CPM kicked your ass with their statement I strongly urge you to reconsider all the lying. It's simply marketing spin. You know it, I know it, CCP knows it and more and more people are learning about it.
It's tricky and clever, but you could not really regard it as smart.
I'm not sure why but there seems to be a hard floor of about 4,700 hundred peak players for DUST. Once that happens we get and event or xSP bonus week.
The interesting this is that grind for SP events are really the only things that increase player numbers, monthly releases have been fairly ineffective.
Whatever they do though the quick increase to about 5,500 to 5,700 once the grind week is over numbers start the slide again to that level.
Amazing though is the consistent number of new players created. Best case for CCP is that it is current players creating a mountain of alts. Worse case scenario is that it is new players who are playing for a night and deleting this dross without a second of regret who will never look at it again. Lose // lose really when you think about it though. |

Granted, there's no interaction between the two games though, so why they combined the two numbers is pure marketing. |

Yea, I guess we have to live with CCP being a 2nd class developer (on console anyway). Bad marketing, bad coding, no QA, not listening to player feedback (despite having 10 years of experience how it works in EVE). Don't let us talk about CCP Shanghai heh, those people should be grateful to still have their job.
Again CCP; HTFU and pull the game while overhauling it. Final Fantasy XIV showed you how to do it right. Grow some balls. |

It's interesting, you mention that reading, talking and watching about EVE is more interesting than actually playing it. Well, all those stories in EVE that are interesting to read, watch and talk about, are stories created and participated by EVE players, you know, playing EVE. What do you think, why is that? Because the game isn't fun?
Ask the people actually playing EVE for years whether EVE is fun or not. I doubt anyone is that masochistic as to want to play the game for years and years, consider it as "not being fun" the whole time, and hoping some day it eventually will be. Not even EVE players are THAT crazy. EVE is different. There's really no denying that. And being different usually is synonymous with "not being for everyone". That's simply the cost one has to pay for being different. And CCP is paying it with EVE, and they will pay it with DUST.
I mentioned this already in several other topics, and I'll repeat it here - people who expect that DUST will one day be played by millions of people are badly mistaken. If CCP does stay on their course of being original and different, DUST will never have the numbers that "mainstram" shooters have. But stories created by DUST players will always overshadow stories created by people playing other shooters, because they will be stories with impact, meaning and consequences. They will be, in a sense, "more real".
And as for CCP's "short" 5 year roadmap for DUST... Most other games' 5 year roadmap is "dump the thing, and make the sequel, if possible". What the hell are you talking about? Show me a title that has 5 year roadmaps planned for their releases, not to mention longer? |

Doesn't matter if you do or don't. 5.000 people isn't what CCP aimed for. Those wont be able to pay for this games developement, ever.
It's F2P and CCP wants as many people playing as possible to generate a lot of cash from their shop (the only thing that gets regular and constant updates for a reason). |

They clearly stated why they did the change.
Dust 514 was originally its own separate server, so it showed Dust 514's population.
On the day that they moved Dust onto the Tranquility server, the numbers combined because they are now on the same server, thus showing the entire servers population number makes more sense.
It's there to read in the patch notes, and if not, the dev blog (don't remember which it was explained in). And no, I'm not going to dig up the link. Do your own homework. |
