Since you're still below 5k average players after patch 1.2? ... or is there an explanation that makes more sense?

Which means it's counting Eve, too, in case you do not know. |

So since 1.2 it's suddenly EVE + Dust? What about Alpha, Beta, Open Beta and Launch?
Let me guess. They claim it was a bug not displaying it right, right? It all makes sense now. |

That's actually exactly what they said... It's a lazy attempt to "prove" DUST and EVE are connected. Honestly it always should have been that way if they were treating them as a joint product. But doing it now, after negative responses to the "rapid fix" patches like 1.2 is purposely deceptive. But by all means they deserve to take such measures if they think it helps their numbers.
The truth is available anyway. http://eve-offline.net/?server=dust |

called marketing when console kiddies dload the game they will see 30K+ ppl playing and not think its both EVE and DUST and wonder WOW game must be amazing!
also meant to mask the actual player numbers from console kids who might see under 5K playing and say the game is "dead" and go play something else |

~5.000 players out of 2 million accounts created? Wasn't that the number they bragged with during the beta?
This is quickly becoming more and more hilarious. No wonder there's next to no marketing about Dust 514. They've got nothing to show for =/ |

Thanks for the good link.
Interesting to note that even though aggregate connected players is on a slow downtrend, the new player numbers are relatively constant at 600 a day, even though it doesn't mention whether those are just new characters associated to current accounts (ie. alts) or just new characters.
If you're into technical analysis, a 9 and 25 day moving average convergence/divergence (MACD) shows a downtrend for current connected players while new players MACD seems to show a leveling off to a flat state - which if you want to take bets, means that the current connected player base will decrease and flatline at about 3500 within 2 months, and stay steady after that unless the new characters joining increases to above 700, after which the average should hit about 4000-4500 players online. This should be relatively steady until December.
Of course, if something suddenly jolts the new player count to above 700 a day then my predictions will mean nothing! :)

Havent you heard Star Citizen wont make a dent on EVE cause it has none of the complexity of EVE, who cares about solid gameplay and actual space flight physics |

Dude the planetside 2 bomber makes at least 3 a day. How many vets do you think smoke the academy games with alts daily, oh Id say around 600! Hello. There is no new players hence the steady decline.
And really shady idea combining the eve numbers with dust. Very misleading and slimey, just like ccp. |

I'm just curious why it matters so much to some people?
Do I have to wait a ridiculous amount of time for a match to start?
No. I login, click on a match and I'm there.
Can I squad up with my friends in the US, ASIA and Australia if they are on?
Yes. I don't have to move servers for the Day/Week or pay to move servers, and I am never going to be forcibly moved to another server.
Am I forced to play on a particular regional server?
No
If I choose not to spend any money on the game do I get put to the back of the login queue?
No.
Are the Developers already planning DUST514 2?
No. I know that in 5 years and beyond the game will still be here.
Does it matter to me that only 5000 people are playing atm
No. Why does it matter to you?

Except 30k+ isn't going to make console "kiddies" wonder "WOW game must be amazing!" instead they'll think "WOW game must be dieing!". 30k people playing reflects a mediocre shooter and yet even black ops 1 still has more people playing than this game has combined with another game. |

combined with the test server of another game, but again why does it matter, it's not detering this game in the least.
has no negative effect on my game experience so it really doesn't matter. |

"Deceptive" is probably a bit too strong: they are emphasising the number that best serves their purpose. My view is that CCP's current policy is to focus on the New Eden universe more and more, with less emphasis on individual games. |

As the author of the site I personally enjoy being able to see what is what - but from the perspective of CCP I can understand they rather showing merged numbers as after all, everyone is in New Eden.
But then I'm also quite certain that if numbers were different they would show different (read higher) simply for the reason that the EVE side does not show combined numbers but rather pilots only.
