The best games I've ever played, table-top, boardgames, videogames - are easy to comprehend and logical. They can be picked up and played, but have layers of depth to them that allow you to improve with skill and enjoy their theme.
Everything you've listed here as reasons Dust is more strategic, are barriers to experience - ie. the fact that it has taken you 6 months to figure out how to play. That is not a sign of strategic depth, but either a quantitative measurement of content - which I admit there's a lot, or a profound failing to produce something playable. If learning how to play is so convoluted, then getting better becomes a frustrating time sink.
I don't see Dust as being more or less strategic than COD, just different. I avoid them based on content, and my favorite thing about Dust right now is that the content is relatively clean. |

What I really like about COD is that you can aim and track targets more easily. In Dust CQC is a dance fest and spray and pray. With far targets I can't track a thing with my laser rifle while ADS. Everyone strafes and moves so fast that it's clearly meant for KB/M users. Plus my K/D ratio has increased by 1.40, just by driving LAVs, instead of shooting with a gun.

Dust maps are 100% some of the worst maps in the history of FPSs. Procedural generation of FPS maps is complete fail. There is no flow, no consideration of movement or cover or sight lines or blockages or like ANYTHING that a regular FPS team consider when designing a map.
This doesn't even cover the sticky terrain problems and idiotic sections that force you to jump in a game that lets you jump twice before you run out of stamina.
You might like other aspects of Dust but please, map design is not one of its strengths. Any COD map has 10x the thought put into it than Dust on its best day.

The first Modern Warfare was awesome, both single and multi. The others ... well they went downhill after that. The Treyarch CoDs never felt right to me, the gunplay was way too sloppy. |

Both are arcade shooters with very little strategy involved. I don't agree with that assessment of the game, except for the its not polished part. :) I'm not exactly sure what the actual definition of arcade shooter is, but with what I personally interpret that phrase to mean: I don't think Dust 514 is an arcade shooter. I think they're about as similar to each other as Regular (American) Football and Arena Football. They're both Football (Shooters), but they're clearly very different games. Regular Football (Dust) is a lower scoring ground war game that requires depth of talent, and a diversity of highly specialized roles to make up a great team. Arena Football (COD) is a high scoring close quarters game that requires a depth of talent, in a one specialized role in order to make a great team. In COD you need 16 guys that are all really great at working together, shooting guns, creating chaos individually, and doing everything faster than the opponent. In Dust514 you need 16 guys that are all really great at working together, specializing in skills completely different from one another, limiting chaos as a collective, and adapting to and exploiting the skillset of their opponents. I think both games have ample opportunity for strategy, but to say they're similar is missing the forest for the trees. Ok Ive gotta chime in since I always see COD broken down to this basic assumption of "durr hurr you run and shoot the guys fast" and really that only holds true if you are playing TDM or FFA with all perks and killstreaks enabled Im no fanboy buy I do recognize why COD has such a wide playerbase and its because they offer something for everyone You want PVE? Go play some zombies You want run and gun with some danger? TDM You want objective based gameplay? CTF, Sabotage, Search and Destroy, Domination You want to play it more old school? Classic versions of the above gameplay modes You think the ideas of perks, killstreaks, weapon attachments are asinine and everyone should die from a single bullet to the torso and real men dont need HUDs? Hardcore versions of the above game modes And thats leaving out a fitting and growth system that is deep enough to tweak however you want but not locked behind a time barrier, and a splash of appearance customization Ugh, that made me sound like a fanboy, but the point remains that it offers up a variety of choices so you can pick and choose what suits you and is deeper than run and gun and much deeper than what dust currently is
That's very true. The different game modes definitely do allow more diversity than what I described. Maybe, I didn't give COD enough credit. I do still say that the kinds of decisions a player makes / team makes in order to win a match in COD are very different from the ones you might make in Dust, and in general those decisions have to be made once, and early in the match.
A game is generally more nuanced strategically if there are more types of pieces on the board. I don't think you can dispute, Dust is the game with more pieces. |

I take polished to mean much more than graphics. I think its generally got its "User Experience" polished. Everything has been figured out in COD for the last 5 years, and it hasn't changed, they've had time to invest in the small details. |

I think the thing that killed CoD for me wasn't the gameplay. It was the fact that it was a game that was marketed as a somewhat historically accurate game that had several glaring inaccuracies in it.
Mainly the fact that hardly any of the guns behave the way that they do in real life. The worst was the M14 that's only semi-auto. If it's an M14 then it's select fire, if it's semi-auto then its an m1a and a civilian firearm. And a grunt's mosin nagant headshotting reliably at 200 meters? yeah right. Inaccurate AK47's? I guess all the ak's they could find were the ones they find in Africa that haven't been maintained in 50 years and have had 200k rounds through the same barrel. |

I would play COD any day over dust for one simple reason. Dust maps are mind-numbingly boring, they all look the same, and as a result, there's no feeling of being in the game like there is with COD with a huge variety of maps.
It seems like your points are somewhat subjective. I remember having just as much teamwork in COD as in Dust, but maybe having more players in Dust gives you the impression people are working together?

The goobers around here sling "CoD" around like it's an insult. It's pretty clear most of them have never really played the game before, because they all have opinions like the OP. They think Dust is some sort of high-skill tactical masterpiece instead of the empty, clunky, strategically devoid arcade shooter that it actually is.
Since they're bad at it, clearly it's a crappy game. |

You are deluded.
What makes CoD such a great FPS is that you can still enjoy yourself without having to get intimate with other players. (Squading up as you'd call it in Dust lingo)
What makes CoD even greater still... Is that...when you do squad up. It makes a difference.
Or maybe you've never had the opportunity to get dominated by teams?
There are only 2 things in CoD that make it less than perfect.
1. Not enough emphasis on damage in relation to where to bullets are hitting. Foot shots are just as valuable as headshots.
2. Killstreaks. People who are on killstreaks.. DO NOT NEED HELP! Killstreaks snowball a match and cause players to quit. Every kill that your killstreak gets, is one less player on player encounter. I play FPS' to play against the other players. Not to play against cheap AI rewards that you don't deserve.
Other than those 2 points.... You just make yourself look like an idiot hating on CoD. You really do.
Because as far as FPS's are concerned... CoD takes the most skill, simply because the killtimes are so quick. If you have a brain and think it through, you'll come to realize that.
Games like Halo where kill times are in the 5 second range.. That's 5 seconds of forgiveness. You make a mistake the game is giving you 5 seconds to recover from that mistake. It's giving your team 5 seconds to come bail you ass out of your stupid decision.
In a game like CoD. If you make a mistake. You don't get time to recover from it. Means you have to be on top of your game at all times. Map control, teamwork, killzones, etc. It all translates into CoD being better than everything else out there at this moment in time.
But go ahead and keep fooling yourself into thinking otherwise.
Oh, and one last point to make on the quick killtimes point. With quicker kill-times. Lag has less opportunity to interfere. The longer it takes to kill someone, the more Lag plays a role in who comes out the winner.
And as far as BF is concerned. Vehicles are cool.... when they are RARE, not when there is enough vehicles for every freaking person to get one and go run off on their own with it. I go into that game to play a sniper and all I get are players in Jets, Choppers and Tanks. Too many vehicles. |

I play FPS' to play against the other players, not AI rewards that are taking the PVP aspect out of the equation.
Battlefied might as well be renamed into Twisted Metal.
The only thing Dust has at this moment in time...is a worthless time-sink disguised as RPG elements. I'm sorry but Dust has no depth to it. Just as EvE has no depth to it.
And any depth that you could attribute to either of them, is purely player created simply because CCP left it up to you and your imagination to create that depth. And what did the community choose for their concept of Depth? Backstabbing each other and turning both games into a giant greifing contest.
If you were to take all player created depth out of the equation... COD has more depth to it. More weapons, More maps, More attachaments, More game modes, More equipment, More classes, More combinations.
So this fantasy world you're trying to live in, where you fool yourself into hating on CoD, because you think it makes you look cool. Is a lie.
And.. as far as skill and depth in Dust is concerned.. When a "Newberry" is dealing with more sway on his weapon and less health on his characters because he has less time invested than his competition.... Does not make for good game mechanics.
Are we here to compete against the players... or to compete against the ****** game mechanics that are putting me at a disadvantage because I wasn't there at day 1? And you call this "A Thinking Mans Game". I call it EVE fanboys getting entitled to free pubstomps in an FPS offshoot of their little universe that they dedicate entirely too much time and money too.
Sandbox =/= Depth. Unless you think Sand is interesting.
Get real.
I disagree with you in regards to the premise that low health = higher skill. Good tracking shooters require just as much strategy and skill as good twitch shooters, the tactics and skills required are just slightly different.
Other than that, you're dead on. Especially in terms of "depth." Anyone who thinks Dust 514 has more depth than CoD either hasn't actually spent any time playing CoD, or is completely ******* delusional. I'm not really of the opinion that it's a particularly deep gaming experience, but it doesn't take much to "out depth" Dust 514.
The customization in Dust 514 is a tad bit deeper than CoD, but only because of the the effects the different frame sizes have on movement and turn speed. Aside from that, the weapon and fitting choices don't really end up being any deeper than the weapon and perks system in CoD... the Dust version just takes MUCH more grinding to get your unlocks.
Anytime people rave about the depth and customization of Dust 514 I seriously wonder if they've just never played any other modern FPS games. |

1. Not enough emphasis on damage in relation to where the bullets are hitting. Foot shots are just as valuable as headshots.
2. Killstreaks. People who are on killstreaks.. DO NOT NEED HELP! Killstreaks snowball a match and cause players to quit. Every kill that your killstreak gets, is one less player on player encounter.
