'zealot'' variants of the energy weapons would be identical to regular variants except for one change.
Instead of locking up when they over heat they just deal feedback damage and you can keep firing taking more damage as you go.
This would let people maybe be able to get that one last shot to kill at the cost of dealing nearly lethal amounts of damage to yourself. |

I have a thread with more information regarding the issues with Overheat and would especially love to see some re-balancing on the Laser Rifle overheat damage as I explain in post #43
Copy/Pasted for Glory:
Quote:Bringing this back up to the front as Ive found some new information regarding overheating.
1.) Overheating a scrambler rifle provides 50 damage to the user across all platforms. 2.) HMGs do not have overheat damage listed in Show Info. 3.) Laser Rifles do dramatically higher damage to the user, with numbers escalating in meta level.
Standard: 150 Damage. Advanced: 202 Damage. Prototype: 255 Damage.
Im now convinced the laser rifle is designed to kill the owner. |

damn a feedback/request that i can actually get behind holy ****
I like the balanced idea of taking more damage after the overheat instead of it locking up. i cant count the number of times i've chosen the assault over the regular for this exact reason. The scrambler rifle in the middle of heavy combat just cant stand up to the GAR due to locking up after only a few rapid shots(yeah i know those shots hit a lot harder but oh well so do gtar rounds which doesnt suffer from overheat just low ammo).

If the other stats were the same then everyone would use these because you presumably wouldn't get the overheat lock (not being able to sprint change weapon etc).
Also there would be an interesting interaction between theses weapons and rep tools/hives. Until you needed to reload anyway. |

How would you want it to deal damage? Per shot, per second of continued overheat? Would it suffer a small damage penalty (say 5-10%) when overheated to keep the other gun viable?
I like the Idea and would use these, but it brings up the issue. Even if you do more damage to yourself with these variants, they are going to be superior because you will still be able to fire while your counterpart with the "regular" version would get stuck walking, be unable to fire, and still have taken as much initial feedback damage as you did.
Besides nothing is making you continue to shoot those final shots to kill your target, so you could use this variant like current scram rifles, but without the draw-back of a feedback stall. |

Something to consider is possible damage to the weapon itself. For example, the description of the Laser Rifle says:
"Heat build-up is typically managed by a self-regulating failsafe, a device used to forcibly shut the weapon off at regular intervals, flushing heat from its internal workings and preventing lethal feedback to the user, but most laser rifles in the field have been altered to bypass the built-in safety protocols."
So it seems that the weapons aren't shutting down to protect the user from further damage, but because they have difficulty functioning at such high temperatures.
My suggestion, along with DPS for the overheat, is to have a breaking point, with an early warning fuction (beeping, or something like that) of course.
+ 1 to the OP, I would like to see something like that for all weapons with an overheat mechanic (vehicle turrets included). It just makes sense to me that if push a weapon beyond it's limits you risk turning it into a really expensive club.
Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

I'm against the idea that a variant should have such remarkably different overheating mechanics.
Either all overheating weapons have this, or none do. That's the only way to go.
What's the difference between an immobile Minmatar ship and a pile of garbage?
The pile of garbage is more lethal.
