They're alright. My favorite. I especially have trouble against Heavies, can't kill them. Admit I using basic, before my respec comes in where I will use ADV.
The upgrades for Mass Driver seem bad. There's like 8 damage added to the Aoe from basic to Proto, and like 30 damage on hit. Mass Drivers are super hard to hit on hit, so I really only pay most of the attention towards Aoe, which is really low.

1. Use flux nades or powerfull Locus nades.
2. If you have a hard time hitting it might be an idea to start with the assault MD which you get at lvl 2, it does less damage but it shoots faster and have a wider blast radius.
3. Using an agile character, like a scout or a fast assault without armor plates makes you able to strafe as fast as possible while still hitting your target, which makes it hard for them to hit you in return.
4. Any elevation is good.
5. Against heavies it might be best to shoot more carefully, try lining up your shots and go for direct hits...
6. Apply to chat "Massholes" - a place where all is using mass drivers, there are many guys with experience that can help you... |

Expanding on Babar's points...
Heavies are easier to kill than shield-tanked assaults. They move even slower when firing, so if one sees you, throw a flux grenade in his/her (can't tell, really) face and get to cover, let it detonate, whip out of cover and weaving from side to side fire so that your shells hit the heavy's feet.
Perhaps the problem is distance. MD shells go far, don't be afraid to stay behind your blue dots. Heavies are certainly a problem if you get too close to them. Weaving from medium range means, due to their large aiming reticle, overheat and poor range, most bullets will be avoided, whilst you obscure their vision and disorientate even further with your shells.
In this fashion most heavies can be dealt with 1v1. On equal tier gear I find I win against heavies a lot, since many naturally tend towards armour tanking and therefore lose to the bonus damage we MDs have on armour.
You'll find that the EXO-5 might have a tiny damage bonus compared to the basic MD, but combined with the skill's passive bonus to AoE, it becomes much more deadly. I'm into Proficiency II with the MD and stick to the EXO-5 for most public matches and it's a breeze. If you don't plan on going into proficiency, sacrificing a high slot for a damage mod will be more than enough.
But that depends on what suit you wear. An agile character as suggested by Babar is useful when positioning yourself. Using a logistics suit to support means I lose the ability to move quickly as I stick to armour plates to capitalise on my passive armour regeneration. It helps, though, to have some armour regen when you catch yourself in the splash of your MD.
Never intend to go for direct hits unless the target isn't moving.
Never bother with the scope, it simply reduces the sensitivity of your controller, and that is only required for precise long range shooting, which is impossible if the reticle is the same as what you get from the on-screen HUD anyway.
If you have a sidearm, use the gaylock (term probably coined by a masshole... oh the irony) for the lulz.
Always run nanohives.
Never stray too far from your team. Meat shields make it so much more fun to wield your artillery.

Babar makes great points and you would be wise to head his wisdom.
Keep moving. Don't aim down scope EVER. Keep bouncing back and forth and set your sensitivity really high. For fine left to right aiming, use strafe and remember that projectiles carry the momentum that your dropsuit has when it releases them.
There are two effective methods for killing heavies. Both involve flux, because you are never going to get through all of their HP otherwise. The MD has 6 shots in it's clip and by the time you reload you will be biomass. Direct impact is the quickest way. Just keep moving and try to hit the guy in the chest. If you have cover you can try kiting the heavy around it. Your movement speed should be faster than his so as he approaches an obstacle, shoot around the corner near his feet and retreat. Repeat until you make him TT.
The only thing I disagree with babar on is #2. I feel that the assault MD is inferior overall and will give you a false sense of confidence in your ability to hit a shot later on. Thing about the MD is you need practice. It will be difficult to start out. Stick with it and at the very least it will be fun. It isn't a killing machine or worthy of the damage and radius nerfs that it received this build, but it is still fun and does have a use in battle. |

As far as heavies go just remember your faster than them either shoot them from a distance or try to find something to play ring a round the rose with. You can than pick them off with some well placed shots (Don't forget good to bring a good nades with you.) You will find shields are the hardest thing to get by when using the mass driver so carrying flux nades is recommend but you don't have to if you don't want to. A flux will take out shields easy than about three well placed shots form your basic mass driver will do the trick.
As far as aiming gos don't shot at your feet unless you have the heath to survive shooting at your feet. (Just so you know when I say heath I mean shields cause really they are the only thing keeping you from killing yourself. If you have to shoot at your feet.) Oh and practice, practice, practice. Also try not to rage to much when you get a shot dead on and it does no damage. This happens a lot with the MD. Any and all complaints about this will just be ignored and invited trolls into your thread.
Nine times out of ten people will start to bunny hop around you once they realized your carrying a mass driver. Your can do one of two things here. You can A wait for them to use up all of their stamina or B time your shots with there bunny hops for when their hitting the the ground. Throwing flux nades will make things easier on you just be sure not to throw them to close to yourself.
Hope this helps. |

Exo-5 has only a slightly higher splash radius and damage than basic, but also doesn't cost much more to fit. It is Worth It, where the Freedom typically isn't. Don't bother with the Freedom unless you plan on camping in an elevated position with damage mods. It is too expensive in ISK and PG fitting for a very small overall upgrade. Proficiency and damage mods are very important in such situations. Flux gernades are less effective from high above, so you are going to be hitting at least some shields. Hitting shields will make it take at least 6 shots to kill anyone that is shield tanked, if you can get that number down to 5 or 6 with damage, then you decrease your time to kill by 4-5 seconds (enormous). Figure out how many shots it takes for you to kill a min/caldari medium frame and adjust your damage output accordingly. You want to be able to kill them in one clip. The 4 second reload is one of the biggest drawbacks of the gun. |

Good advice. Make sure you have more stamina than your opponent. If they start bunny hopping and dodging, close distance. You didn't realize it when you picked up the gun, but you are actually playing as a shotgunner half the time. |

Can't say I agree with that I mostly run av or contact nades it's really all about your play style.

Well we do agree, I hate using anything but either the Freedom or the Exo-5. Using the assault MD is only meant for beginner training. Just to be clear.

Assault probably takes the learning curve off the gun a little bit, but it is going to be recording a lot more hits that aren't going to be hits with an exo-5. At the start of the build, my biggest problem with the gun was that I was going for shots that would have been hits in chromosome and found quickly that the nerf was actually pretty significant. It wasn't until I got a respec and kept my MD operation at 3 for a few weeks that I started to get accurate again. I guess we just have different methods of practice. The easier shots are probably better for a freshie freshie MD user. |
