Expanding on Babar's points...
Heavies are easier to kill than shield-tanked assaults. They move even slower when firing, so if one sees you, throw a flux grenade in his/her (can't tell, really) face and get to cover, let it detonate, whip out of cover and weaving from side to side fire so that your shells hit the heavy's feet.
Perhaps the problem is distance. MD shells go far, don't be afraid to stay behind your blue dots. Heavies are certainly a problem if you get too close to them. Weaving from medium range means, due to their large aiming reticle, overheat and poor range, most bullets will be avoided, whilst you obscure their vision and disorientate even further with your shells.
In this fashion most heavies can be dealt with 1v1. On equal tier gear I find I win against heavies a lot, since many naturally tend towards armour tanking and therefore lose to the bonus damage we MDs have on armour.
You'll find that the EXO-5 might have a tiny damage bonus compared to the basic MD, but combined with the skill's passive bonus to AoE, it becomes much more deadly. I'm into Proficiency II with the MD and stick to the EXO-5 for most public matches and it's a breeze. If you don't plan on going into proficiency, sacrificing a high slot for a damage mod will be more than enough.
But that depends on what suit you wear. An agile character as suggested by Babar is useful when positioning yourself. Using a logistics suit to support means I lose the ability to move quickly as I stick to armour plates to capitalise on my passive armour regeneration. It helps, though, to have some armour regen when you catch yourself in the splash of your MD.
Never intend to go for direct hits unless the target isn't moving.
Never bother with the scope, it simply reduces the sensitivity of your controller, and that is only required for precise long range shooting, which is impossible if the reticle is the same as what you get from the on-screen HUD anyway.
If you have a sidearm, use the gaylock (term probably coined by a masshole... oh the irony) for the lulz.
Always run nanohives.
Never stray too far from your team. Meat shields make it so much more fun to wield your artillery.
