Cheer Up Buttercups, lets play a game!
Lets say you're the new guy, you just graduated college with an associates in game design and somehow you landed yourself a job at CCP to work on the revolutionary game of today's generation called Dust 514. First day on the job you've been called down to the round table at CCP Headquarters to attend an important meeting. The topic of discussion is dire, The Big Boss CEO asks a very simple question to all the Devs at the table.
"Dust 514 is a mess and is failing quickly, What must we do to fix it!? No Bull crap, 10 seconds to answer, Go!"
DEV1: Add more AUR Items DEV2: Strengthen the Dust/Eve Link DEV3: Nerf and Buff questionable Weapons and Vehicles DEV4: Improve graphics DEV5: Create More Events DEV6: Take A Vacation, We'll be refreshed and ready to work in 2 weeks. DEV7: Core Elements & Core Mechanics, Communication, sir.
CEO: These are all very good suggestions, though I must ask DEV7, your suggestion is very broad and quite frankly pretty alien to this table. Please elaborate and explain your reasoning, you have 2 minutes.
DEV7: " The Triple C's, known as Communicatin, Core Mechanics and Core Elements. Something I picked up back in my freshman year of game design 101. The rest of the Devs have all suggested great proposals and they all have more experience than I do. However I believe and from what I was taught that freshman year, is that in order to have a great game, you must first have a great foundation. Which is exactly what the Triple C's are designed to do. Since I only have 1 minute left I'll explain our Triple C's quickly.
Core Mechanics: Aiming/Shooting, Reviving, Game Glitches & Bugs, Memory Leaks, FPS Drops
Core Elements: Player Trading/Market, Tutorials/Explanations/Quick Tips, Matchmaking, Corp Emphasis, Planetary Conquest, Game Modes, Maps, PvE.
Communication: Providing adequate and vital information to the player base in a timely manner. As well as communicating with players on their suggested feedback, questions and reports.
That is all sir."
CEO: Well by god! I think we might have a genius here! Brilliant DEV7, Brilliant! Now I want all Devs and their respective teams to drop all current projects on hold and begin working on DEV7's Suggestions! I want a full update done and ready to go in a months time. |

I would sit next to CCP Sunshine and say "What's up? How are YOU doing?"
Getting fired wouldn't be a problem for me, because I don't know anything about programming... And I would be living in ICELAND!!!! |

This should provide some pretty good feedback on where the community wants CCP to go IRUBY HEART wrote: DEV6: Take A Vacation, We'll be refreshed and ready to work in 2 weeks. DEV7: Revamp the forum to dev posting only

DEV7: spend a few hours and make the forum for informational purposes only for a period of time. Allow players to submit tickets regarding bugs, and allow us (the devs) to work uninterrupted to fix the problems we already know about. Allow corps their private forums, but make the forum for informational purposes only, and have our GMs relay information 2-3x per DAY while we are all hard at work getting this game to a playable and enjoyable condition for everyone.
Once we roll out fixes, open the forum for discussion and repeat until we get it all working the way we envision it

Throw money at the problem.
As CCP do not have the finances required in the time frame required, probably do a deal with the devil, or someone who does have the finances.
The option they will take is to continue development at the rate they are, and continue to be the gaming industry anomaly they are.
1 game in 10 years (if you beleive that dust and eve are one game) and CCP can't get either at the levels required/demanded by even the 'fans'.
CCP is a games company. CCP is not New Eden.
Their continued approach to eve entails developing new content (which dust is) instead of purely focusing development on honing and polishing the existing content until it shines.
The problem with this approach results in broken game mechanics and an overwhelming need to spend time where it is not necessary to do so. One might beleive that with ten years of adding content, you already have enough content.
There is nothing wrong with being afraid of losing subscribers, but the actions taken as a result by CCP minimise and dilute the efforts made by those who they sought to gain.
It's hard to give credit to someone who does what they're supposed to do. So before you put your hands together and applaud CCP for their next game refinement/update/fix/patch, ask yourself whether a multi-million dollar games company is givin you something that should have been done prior to release. |

Dont hire people that have no idea what they are doing...+1 to that.. 2 get off their asses and fix it. otherwise why bring the servers down every night? 3. listen to your community "the mature ones" 4. stop nerfing and buffing things till the major issues are fixed lag, glitches, bugs 5. become more active in your own community. to dust devs 6. FIRE CPM and get players who are giving the most possitive feedback on the forums. because letting players vote will just let them exploit and get away with it... in order to become a great game you need to have one great dev's and people devoted to fixing the game and its community. right now my rating to ccp would be 0 out of 10. |

As a Dev you'd probably also have to be reminded that we programmers are not a magic race of fairies that can instantly materialize any desire you think of, and that sometimes even seemingly "simple suggestions" can have a Kittenlish amount of backend to them to make them work. Yes, it would be nice if we could fix a certain bug, but it's called a bug because we -don't- know what the problem is, and finding that is often a great deal harder than calling up our code and just rewriting a few lines. Furthermore the aiming systems are based on different underlying base mechanics than other games.
As an example in COD there is a mechanic known as "Hit Scans", basically projectiles don't shoot bullets. Instead they shoot infinitely fast, infinitely long straight lines. (with a few exceptions such as the shotgun and the RPG-7) These lines collide with the first hitbox they encounter, and apply their appropriate weapon effect. (AKA if you are aiming down sights you have unerring accuracy except from weapon sway, recoil, and lag)
Games such as PS 2 and Firefall also have a similar mechanic, featuring what is basically instant bullets. AKA, bullets don't have effective travel times, except on certain variants such as missiles.
Mechanically this is a fairly easy system to implement since in the bare bones game world (just hitboxes etc) all you are doing is shooting a ray from your gun's barrel and stopping at the first hit box it encounters (Things that can be shot through don't really have hit boxes, and are just textures that for all intents and purposes don't exist on this simple model)
-This part is more speculation heavy-
From my experience in DUST, this is not necessarily the way this is done (except maybe the sniper rifle), because ALL games have an effective distances, this indicates that they are NOT using the standard hitscan model of gunfire and are instead using something else, something that seems to be having the bullets all act much like an RPG would in COD, i.e a bullet "object" is created that travels down the map, and makes contact with something. This system allows for more "realistic" shooting mechanics, as well as a frustrating ability on the hand of speed tanks to "dodge" bullets.
While this mechanic (if it's ever fixed) would allow bullets to be handled in a more interesting way than in other games, it currently is causing issues with overall lag, and other problems with just not generating a ray-esque bullet.
-And before you comment, no, it would not be a "simple" matter to just change it to that infinite ray method, especially if they plan long term on sticking with the other method. (Which if it is fixed would be a very good mechanic to have) |

DEV6: Take A Vacation, We'll be refreshed and ready to work in 2 weeks. DEV7: I believe we need to fix and remove some of the plagues that have haunted this game and have reduced the sense of fun while playing the game.

DEV7: Well sir, Getting Sniped from an MCC, getting sniped by tanks and snipers hiding in the redline, getting ran over by indestructible LAV's, and shooting people 30 times in the back only to get no damage isn't considered "fun" from my understanding.
That is all sir."
