I thought I'd promote this to its own thread. The premise is that perhaps we need more fanboys, not less...
There's balance. We have haters and fanboys. So what. Somehow people think that CCP has no ability to review comments in a critical way and look at the issues being discussed from both viewpoints and take what fits into their own vision. Seriously?
If we had 100,000 fanboys playing at a time the game would be great success wouldn't it? No matter how many haters we accumulate they will never be a measure of its success until they stop being haters.

I would argue that haters and fan boys both want a awesome game to play at the end of the day
In my opinion
Also someone delivering negative criticism using the same means (forums) as someone who loves the game for what it is can often be misconstrued as hate(rs) |

Personally I wish both would GTFO.
I'd prefer people with some common sense, intelligence, consideration, and ability to eloquently express their thoughts. And of course, they should like the game (or what the game can become) enough to play it and post about it.
These kind of people need honest, direct and timely feedback from CCP dev's though....

Well it is hard for CCP to keep the fanboys around, hell it is even hard to keep the haters around. CCP has been offering basically the same broken, slightly uninteresting, gameplay since beta and beyond. At the same time it punishes new users with a giant SP wall saying if you wanna compete work your ass off for a couple of months, honestly the SP cap is just so brutal to new players, so they can't even get new players to become fanboys, most of them don't even bother coming to the forums before deleting the damn game; and then there is people like me, who neither hate nor love the game we just have hope that we will love the game SOON (TM), or hate it and release ourselves from the shackles that is Dust 514. |

But whilst we are using big words to explain behavour, we should also note that people will more often than not use diplomacy(constructive feedback) first and then resort to protest/ rioting (ranting on forums/verbal attacks)and finally affirmative action (quitting the game).
Not all ways in that order tho hehe
Notice i am careful not to wonder too far into real world politics and views or we will breach forum rules and wouldnt want your thread locked :) |

If we're talking about what turns people I have a theory...
Playing the beta was easy street in terms of SP gain and access to cheap upgrades. All of this went away. Many players at the top of the food chain found they would have to spend lots of time waiting to get the gear they wanted. At the same time there were range reductions -- so everyone used to godlike weapon ranges was reduced to missing targets they were trained to view as in optimal range. Never mind changes to suits and vehicles and so forth as well.
Basically, to put it simply, the game would feel ruined.
New players don't have any of this history... so they go down a different road. Not much is clear (vets often forget what it was like to start at the beginning) and once you get out of this random academy thing you get pub stomped a lot. I can't see getting absolutely destroyed as a new player being much fun.
As a supposed fanboy, I'd suggest that CCP needs to think carefully about actions they take and how they can turn people from happy players into disgruntled haters. I'm not going to suggest that CCP did not create the situation we are in today.
Luckily, many of us do still play and have fun. And, realistically, I'm not sure if the people that have become jaded will be brought back. I'd suggest focusing on newer people and getting them to stay... as fixing what happened isn't likely to have as big an effect as taking things away in the first place.
People feel loss more acutely than the feel gain. |

I find both terms negative for the two sides of the player base.
CCP have an outstanding idea of creating a game that spans genres & formats in an ever changing virtual universe. However, their failings, especially compared to the trailers we were seduced with, have had a reverse effect & has actually created a massive divide amongst the different players to the point that I don't think we'll be united any time soon.
The community has been divided into FPS vs RPG & PC vs Console, each group blaming the other for the issues. Even the baseless argument that the PS3 hardware is unsuitable for Dust has some materialised which is bizarre in itself ... Just look at the mechanics & graphics of COD, BF & even Gran Turismo to see that argument is bonkers.
The one thing we all have in common is passion for Dust. There is still time for CCP to pull themselves from the brink, ignore all of us in the community & go back to what they first envisaged & what they showed the world in the original trailers!

I would agree.
Notice how the haters tend to actually stick around and keep "hatin" while the rest of us just keep on playing and having a good time. I'm pretty convinced most of us are still enjoying our game, regardless of how praising or critical we get |

Thats because if you say the game is great and dandy then nothing gets addressed. You hate and criticise the game things tend to get done.
The squeeky wheel gets the grease. Ever heard that before, take it in.

Really now, you can go into almost any thread with constructive criticism and see people telling the OP to stop complaining and a litany of excuses on CCPs behalf and that the game isnt as bad as they say, stuff like that is fanboying and creates an illusion of the game that doesnt hold up to the reality |

Well, there's a bunch of fine lines in the mix.
Some people actually don't think things are as bad as some people say. It's reasonable for them to say so. If CCP was previously of the opinion it could leave things alone with a mixed review of this nature then I hope they've learned they need to look into things when they come up a lot -- whether or not people stick up for the status quo (there are always people happy with how things are).
I reserve the right to use HTFU, adapt or die, can I haz your stuff and moar tears any time someone is QQing... whether it be about the game being broken or otherwise. This doesn't mean things are good -- it means quit whining.
Where I get pissed is when I see new employees called out personally by people who haven't even given them time to start doing their job before attacking them. Similarly, while the community reps were not elected I really don't think they need to be personally attacked every time they attempt to interact on the forums. It's a low class move to put this kind of crap on people who may not truly be anonymous like the rest of us idiots.
Anyhow, please don't mistake counter-ranting with denying that there might be issues with the game. Dust Fiend made a great list of items earlier today -- there is lots to improve on. |

Agreed with more fanboys the worse the game. Haters give you a reason to look at your game in more detail - while fanboys just pat the creator on the back and lick butt.
