What was the reasoning behind letting the beta players keep all of the skill points and wealth from a years worth of "testing"?
Normally upon release the beta players start over, just like everyone else. Instead you've given a group of players a massive head start. Surely knowing the weapons and maps was advantage enough already?

Open or closed Beta is still Beta, it's not the official release is it?
Ergo, you're points should have been reset before release no?

Open betas traditionally let you keep your stuff. This is probably good to know for future reference. |

All assets were reset with open Jan 22, 2013 Dust was released May 14, 2013
That's far from years worth of anything, further maps have been added and removed as well as changed and many pieces of gear, including dropsuits and weapons, have been fundamentally altered (just check out the feedback forums or ask a closed beta vet about bumbfire swarm launchers for killing infantry ).
So while I in no way deny that there was some advantage gained through playing open beta it is neither as extreme nor as pervasive as your OP seems to suggest. If I had to guess the reason behind it, I would say it's likely due to it being open beta so anyone could choose to participate, combined with a hat tip to all the beta vets that did indeed spend months or more testing in support of Dust 514 with a final nod to dust being a long term game in which a handful of weeks worth of progression won't be drastically signifigant 3-5 years in (or really even 1 year in for the most part).

This again.
If something seems to keep coming to you're attention, you either read the forums way to much and/or a lot of people share my frustration and the easy mode start some of you got.
Come on, you can't deny it's a joke. How many corps play poxy PC? How many of them are beta vets?
How many people have left because they have been farmed by someone who can easily kill you because SP trumps skill almost every time.

SP doesn't trump skill, I'm far from the best FPS player. Before Dust the last FPS I played seriously was Unreal 2004 so I have years of rust on me and wasn't the best of the best even before the rust.
I run support logi, fits geared for healing and supply not killing.
Having stated those facts I'll state another, during one of the promo events CCP seeded characters into the game with proto or better gear and essentially max skills. I was able to use free fits go up against groups of 3-5 of these players and come out heady consistently. If it was a group of 5 "ahead" would usually mean that I died with one of them left. This wasn't while using a vehicle of any kind nor was it while running with a squad. (yep, solo support logi did this).
So not only does skill trump SP but the level of skill required to do it isn't even top 100, in fact it doesn't even require a 3.0 KDR.

Probably the most honest answer so far.
To Vin Vicious, I can't comment on you being a loser but you do sound like an idiot. Months of open beta testing before the official launch is not quite the same as ten years of being live.
Either way, I don't suppose CCP will give an answer so the rest is just supposition |

Oh that's cute, dont get upset because you didn't start the game during open beta.
ima sum this thread for you from a reader perceptive, "I didn't start playing when the vets did, and that's not fair"
this games been live since the beginning of open beta you moron, saying "open beta" is a companies way of saying, "don't review this until we feel its ready to be reviewed"
Was the game downloadable by anyone during open beta? YEP that's LIVE.
Good day sir!

YEP that's LIVE. Good day sir! /thread I was with you until "/thread", which is almost as bad "tl;dr". I'm going to continue to add to the conversation even though you feel nothing more needs to said. With all due respect I don't give a ****.
Words like "BETA" and "Commercial Release" have been thrown around these forums more than **** a monkey whorehouse even though they're just as meaningless as "all natural" or "clinically proven". Doesn't matter what they called it, the game is free to play and it was available to every PS3 owner with an internet connection. Everybody had the same chance to start at the same time on a level field. Not my fault if someone didn't start when I did.
And I'm getting really, really sick of people whining about SP being the only reason I won/you died. When I die that's nobody's fault by my own. I can't blame SP because odds are I have more than they do. But you know what? It's not as important as you think it is.
I've always bought boosters and I'm currently "between jobs" so I can play much more than most. But I've always put a little SP in to everything. I've been playing this game since around August/September of last year. I unlocked officer weapons for the very first time two weeks before open BETA. Trained 2 levels of sharpshooter proficiency the next week (that was back when that skill was...kind of a big deal). My Minmitar Assault is the first proto suit I've ever unlocked, ever. I had proto AR's and proto forges, every other weapon was only advanced. Sure I had my core skills maxed but do you really think my extra 20 shields made me a god? I only had to miss twice and you'd have the upper hand. My point is I've had both a ton of SP and very few skills maxed out so I can tell you that once you get past a few basic skills that should take at the most a few weeks to a month you're lying to yourself if you think SP was the only reason you died.
Was I the best player in the game back then? Nope. And even with all my proto gear there are several players that are leaps and bounds above me skill wise. But even my 'inferior' advanced suits and non proficiency skill having ass any of those better players that ran up on me thinking I'd be an easy kill either wound up dead or looking for a place to hide and recharge.
My point is, aside from brand new players in militia fits vs. veterans with full proto gear, the SP gap can always be overcome with smart gameplay, quick thinking, teamwork and the ability to run very, very fast. |

Except yes you can compete on their level. There is a maximum amount of SP you can field at any given time in EVE, and there's a maximum amount of SP you can field at any given time in DUST. After you hit that point, you are equal.
It seems people's problem is that they want it take less time for them to hit that point than it took for anyone who started playing before them.
For DUST it takes 6.5 months to hit that point without boosters if you're hitting your SP caps. With boosters, it takes 4.4 months. Is that really so ridiculously long to reach max efficiency for an online game?
(No offense to Taurio Bruni intended, you just hit a point in your post that sent me off on a tangent.) |

Except EVE is actually an open world MMO, and like every other open world MMO it has content for new starters that lets them develop apart from the vets then graduate up the chain at their own pace. In Dust there is no other content other than that next match filled with proto-stompers.
Imagine if all of WoW's content was endgame raid zones and you just got spawned in there at L1 and told to HTFU. I'm guessing they wouldn't have hit 11mil subs.
Anyone who relates Dust to an actual MMO, let alone EVE is a raging spastic. |
