I'm just some random nub posting on the forum. I've been playing since Mordu's Private Trials, as both a tanker and a logibro. If you've seen my posts on here, you'll know by now that I'm a CCP fanboi and continuously stand by them in their FPS endeavor. I made this thread to share a bit about why I AFK in the MCC.
Firstly... I'm bored. The game has changed a lot since the closed beta, and while I pitch some pretty good tents in my pants when I read that we're getting new content, the gameplay has gotten fairly repetitive for me. Instant Action - Skirmish, check if there's 3-6 people from the same corp on the other team (if so, bail - if not, continue), deploy Gunnlogi (I don't see why there's so much whining between armor and shield tanks - shields work perfectly fine for me in an anti-infantry role), do some donuts, rinse, repeat.
I'm not even going to give planetary conquest a try. It's the same maps, same games, the only difference is that I'm working for someone else instead of myself.
Now, as for why I actually AFK - I don't really want to force myself to grind every week to hit the SP cap. If I miss out on one week, that's 270k SP (I run boosters) I miss out on. The game punishes those that don't hit their cap every week, and I really don't want to fall behind everyone else.
I know CCP has other things going on, and working with Sony has got to be one of the rings of Hell, but I keep seeing threads pop up about the long-awaited rolling SP cap. This would be a huge boon to this game in more ways than one (allowing me to log off so other people that actually play can fill my slot, for example).
Don't get me wrong, the game has a ton of potential, and I really do hope that CCP gets to meet their long-term goals. I've never played a FPS that allowed for this much customisation, allowing any role to be filled by any suit, while in every other game you're locked into a certain set of items for the class you choose (I'm looking at you, PS2). When I read about what CCP wants to do with this game, I get excited for the future of this game.
I'll still keep in touch via forums, but for now, you'll see me online every Wednesday - Friday (4am - 5pm job \o/) sitting in my easy chair aboard the MCC, watching as the game down below evolves. I'll definetly be back when we get some PvE action going (dual forge wielding drones, meet Gunnlogi), but for now, the routine has worn on me. I still love this game, and it will inevitibly suck me back into its vile clutches sooner or later. I have given CCP around $200 for my entirety playing, and I wouldn't ask for one cent refunded. If I didn't feel as though the game was worth it, I wouldn't have spent so much money and so many hours playing.
TL;DR - More kittenposting from an airbore swine. |

I get why a lot of you do this, I have started doing it also and try to encourage as many as I can to do it. However it completely ignores the work others do put in to reach their cap or earn isk, major flaw for a even more majorly flawed game :\ one day.. one day |

When I'm bored, I don't AFK- I start messing around with starter fit LAVs. I get some WP, cause chaos to support my team, and reward players who bother to use decent AV.
Not to mention doing doughnuts, offroading, and running over protobears is FUN. yes- fun does exist if you stop grinding. |

Cosgar is talking about the SP rollover that was talked about before uprising. A rollover means that the SP you didn't "earn" last week will be added to you cap for the next week. aka 1 week you "earn" 100k Sp and you have therefore what 90k something SP left. These 90K Sp will be added to next weeks SP cap so that the cap now won't be 190k something but instead 190k+90k = 280K skill cap. This would be a very very big bone to those guys who plays and loves the game but play it on a very shifty time basis aka like OP.
Why i write "earn" the whole way though is because i think MCC afk'ing is a bitchy move. Tried playing with FRIENDS ??? or is this a new term for you ??? Tried to actually STAY in a match against a group of people who are somewhat organized ???? Those battles always turn out differently than those with only randoms. |

I...this is honestly everything I think pertaining to this particular facet of the game. Honestly. Please, take all my likes.
It's just not in my nature to AFK, but at this point I honestly think I might start. I've held out for a long while, earning my SP the hard way, and all it got me is the realization that it would take about 72.5 games (not including passive SP since I'm not too keen on doing any math, not that I have the numbers to do so) to get Dropsuit Engineering/Electronics to level 4. |

The Elite pack is not that bad, dren logi and dren sentinal rock. swarm launcher is junk, rifle and shotgun is fun. It's like getting a bunch of free stuffs for buying 200k aur. I figured I'd just go with the bigger package at once vs buying several 20 dollar ones over time. Just like you , I have spent nearly 200 on this and do not regret it. No one should be rewarded for not playing. And I wholeheartily agree with this opinion. I only use this flawed mechanic right now because I, quite seriously, CBA'ed to force myself to play right now. Until it's fixed, I'll continue to use this method to stay with the rest of the group though.
Of course, the rolling SP cap would completely remedy this situation. I'm not DEMANDING THAT THIS BE PUT IN NOW AS A PAYING CUSTOMER as many of the other threads are doing. It'll come when it comes, and it'll be a glorious day when it does. |

So you are going to AFK to rack up SP and ISK for more AFKing, instead of playing the game and earning even more SP and isk (Only nincompoops lose money) so you can enjoy the next round playing...
So why bother playing if you AFK for the sake of AFKing? I don't have the time nor the will to leave myself AFKing just to AFK some more, there are far more entertaining things in life and I'd rather play.
But hey, to each their own, whatever floats your boat. /shrugs |

But hey, to each their own, whatever floats your boat. /shrugs I AFK so I don't fall behind all the other players in terms of SP in lieu of a rollover system. If you read my post, I underlined the main point of AFK'ing, being that this game punishes you for not playing by permanently putting you behind a ton of other people. I continue to do this, even though I burnt myself out, because I know better stuff is coming in the future, and I don't want to be left so far behind when it comes that I won't be able to enjoy it.
Again, a rollover SP system would (almost) completely alleviate this problem, both the AFK MCC'ing and the problem of "if you don't play now, you'll regret it later". Hell, there were some months I'd pay for an Eve sub just to keep the queues going, even though I didn't play it. |

You're completely right.
CCP just needs to make the game interesting enough so that way they can make proper mechanics that support actually playing the game, since people will be more interested in the game that they're playing than the number that's slowly rising :/

Honestly I can't blame anyone for getting bored with this game. Im still fairly bored with it myself and only started playing again while waiting for my respec to happen.
What I have to ask though, is why do you feel like you need to keep playing and accumulating every possible skill point? I barely even played since release and I have over 5 mil from passives and no active boosters. It seems once you hit 10 mil you should have multiple loadouts with max skills. Why not just buy the passive boosters and avoid wasting time and a slot on your team? |

If the game is boring, don't play.
This game already gives you passive SP. How big a douche do you actually have to be in order to still AFK?
None of your justification is meaningful because it's all about you. You, you you. In the meantime, you are part of the problem by helping ruin the game for people that actually do want to play. Please leave. |

Firstly, I'm quite comfy here, thank you. *Sips tea, adjusts monicle, and continues watching through the MCC shield*
I'm not trying to justify taking up a slot that would otherwise be a player contributing. I know it's detrimental to the other legitimate players. I'm explaining the reason why it's done. Whether or not you agree with it is a non-issue, since it'll be done either way.
Also, while yes the game does give you passive SP (bought 3 Omega boosters :3), it just doesn't compare to the amount you'd get when combined with the SP cap, being 180k (270k on a booster). If you don't combine the two, then you're going to be left hopelessly behind the rest of the flock, which is why we have this problem in the first place.
The rolling SP cap that's been talked about would fix this issue, allowing you to "save up" potential SP. So if you missed your cap last week by 30k, it'll carry over into the next week, giving you 210 potential SP.
As it is right now, you're being punished for not forcing yourself online every week to cap out. Whether or not you think it's fair that this alternative means of gaining SP exists (AFK MCC'ing) is also a non-issue, since, again, it'll happen either way.
I created this thread in hopes of some feedback as to the current situation of the game. The routine has become stale. If you've read previous posts made by me, I'm a diehard CCP fanboi that'll generally stand by CCP's views. I'm not even trolling when I say I'm doing this to better the community by bringing it to everyones attention why we do what we do. We're not proud of it, but how else are we to remain competitive without tearing our eyes out? The game as it is plays as one big grindfest a week, followed by 6 days of doing something you actually want to do.
Also, don't think I hate the game or anything. I love this game. I've been playing since Mordu's Private Trials, and back then, all of the visions CCP had for this game got everyone excited for the future, which we were hoping to be sooner. I'm not DEMANDING anything happen RIGHT KITTENING NOW, but the current state of the game leaves a lot to be desired. PvE will definetly have me clamoring back, and if I'm reading what the devs are talking about right, the slew of new things should keep people interested in playing (not AFK'ing) for the long term.
Finally, your last comment. I know I'm more important than the other fifteen proles romping through the sand. Why, you may ask? I'm The Amazing Flying Pig. I don't need an explanation. I'm me, they're them, and I'm vastly superior in all feats of strength and agility, more knowledgeable in all subjects (both academic and "street"), and make a fine roast when seasoned properly and tuirned slowly over an open flame. |

Seriously, stop playing and take a break.
Forcing yourself to log in and play (yes "play", someone has to be at the controller to start a match, return to MQ after the match, and start again. You just choose not to participate) isn't gonna help you enjoy the game more.
Come back and you're where you left out without the stress of feeling like you're 'left back'. Stop torturing yourself in something you clearly dont want to do. If you're worried about not getting SP, you're still getting passive SP.
Thats the positive light out of it.
The negative part is that you're probably frustrating other players on your team when you afk and contribute nothing at all. I sure as hell know you wouldnt want to play a game where a quarter of your team is sitting doing nothing so why would you do it to others?
So do yourself a favor and take a break, you'll be doing yourself a favor as well as others. Maybe you'll even begin to enjoy this game when you come back. |

This is where the problem lies. As soon as I decide to take a break, I permanently put myself behind the crowd with no hope of ever catching back up. The game will not allow you to get back to where you could be if you miss just one week of SP capping (unless you want to do at least 180 1k wp games consecutively within a few days).
It's still a great game, and as prevoiusly stated, I have every intention on returning. I just don't like the fact that as soon as I do leave for the first week, I'll forever be behind, no matter how hard I try to catch up. This is why we have MCC AFK'ers - we get to stay caught up, while not playing. A rollover SP system would allow you the opportunity to work your way back up, but as it stands, this is the only way. |

Actuallly its not what you got, but how u use it. I kill many daily using FREE GEAR |

No one should be rewarded for not playing. If I don't play, I don't cap. I haven't capped in almost a month now, and that's fine by me; I haven't played. Pretty much the same here, and I don't really care about falling behind because I've pretty much reached what I wanted in terms of skills. I could max out all role skills but for the one thing I wanted to do, I've gotten to the point where I can only skill into alternative roles or max out the one I'm already running, albeit the benefits are merely marginal and ignorable. |

Why I would afk in the MCC if i didn't need the practice to 'get gud'
As a protest against the passive component of match sp rewards(i.e. sp for time in match). It's a reward mechanic that works against people participating in the match. It sends an implicitly bad message to new players that their personal contribution to the match have only so much worth, and that sp will be dispensed not according to effort or merit, but according to a 'socialist' sp dispensing system.
It's a destructive message and a destructive game mechanic. I think we have enough data to all agree on this.
But the motivation for the mechanic was a good one - CCP was worried about noobs receiving a brutal kicking in pubs and to add insult to injury recieving absolute no skillpints from the match.
This is a valid concern and important to DUST's future, but it is unfair and unreasonable to place the burden for this on the shoulders of the match skillpoint mechanic. A better solution must be found.
So, suggestion time.
The new player academy seems to be getting good results, the primary complaint seems to be that there is a very abrupt transition to open pub matches. Maybe a couple more tiers is worth trying - this should take some of the pressure off the sp reward mechanic.
Concerning active sp rewards for open pub matches, the time-based component of sp rewards has got to go. But how do we address the 0-sp-while-getting-pubstomped-problem? There's a lot of good suggestions on these forums, all of which incorporate asymmetrical sp rewards for noobs vs. vets, either calculated on an individual encounter-by-encounter basis, a match-average basis, or a combination of these.
My general suggestion is that active warpoints earned(kills, assists, rezzes, heals, u/l spawns, hives, hacks) must be used as a multiplier for a noob-specific sp boost. So zero wp still equals zero sp, but 25 wp for one assist gets you standard sp + a bonus based on how relatively inexperienced your character is(based on whatever criteria works best). What the specific form of this noob-bonus is doesn't matter, so long as what gets rewarded is active contributions to the match based on warpoints earned.
In reality, there are multiple good answers, any one of which would be a big improvement over what we have now.

AFKers used to bother me, but it's all backgroud noise to me now. We only have a tiny fraction of a release level game at the moment and all estimates point to another year before that changes. Everyone is waiting for something, be it a respec, a racial variation, a weapon fix, RTS elements, or something else. Until that happens we all have to make our own fun.
Some play a standard FPS style, some murder taxi, but even that may pale over time. If you've burned out in play but still support CCP monetarially via boosters I don't care what you do in match. You can drive a taxi, you can fly a dropship just for fun, you can shoot people in the face, or you can party in the MCC. It doesn't matter because the outcome of the match doesn't matter. You aren't taking the place of someone else because CCP will just instantiate a new match for the next batch of players. Nobody is waiting in a queue because of you.
Two things would dramatically diminish AFKing:
1) Making the game fun and wining matches relevant. 2) Implementing rollover SP
The first is going to take a year or so to sort out, but the second involves changing one half of a line of code. Instead of:
Bonus_SP := 197,000;
you write:
Bonus_SP := Bonus_SP + 197,000;

Now, as for why I actually AFK - I don't really want to force myself to grind every week to hit the SP cap. If I miss out on one week, that's 270k SP (I run boosters) I miss out on. The game punishes those that don't hit their cap every week, and I really don't want to fall behind everyone else.
Not entirely true. Once you have around 7~8 million SP you can have both proto suit and weapon you want to specialize +core skills. After that you can simply quit playing if you're bored and let passive SP accumulate till next build. But you spent $200 (wow) on boosters and **** and I can agree you're right now forced to AFK so that you consume those active boosters and not let them go to waste. After you consume them I highly suggest you take a break from Dust till next build/update.

I'm a Gunnlogi pilot with close to 9m SP running a total of three Omega boosters (about halfway through my first one), with a couple of 30-day actives from merc packs waiting to be used. Saving up for when we get our advanced / proto tanks, or the Amarrian tank, whichever comes first. Gonna be a great day when I can sweep the field with a gigantic laser beam of death. |

from an airbore swine. There's only one reason to AFK. That reason is, is that you're a selfish douche who thinks you're more important than the other 15 members of your team that you are screwing over. *Sips tea, adjusts monicle, and continues watching through the MCC shield* I'm not trying to justify taking up a slot that would otherwise be a player contributing. I'm me, they're them, and I'm vastly superior in all feats of strength and agility, more knowledgeable in all subjects (both academic and "street"), and make a fine roast when seasoned properly and turned slowly over an open flame.
I'm not bitter at all, but I can tell the difference between douchey excuses for selfish behavior from legitimate reasons like. " someone dropped by unexpectedly ".
Let me put it this way. There is no reason that can justify you, or anyone else, knowingly and repeatedly choosing to afk other than that you, and your ilk, are asses.
This is a fact, simply because you repeatedly choose to be an ass, and treat your fellow gamer like an ass even though you have the option not too.
It's just like cutting in line. |
