From the Wikipedia page
Reception
Pre-release
Before release Dust 514 has been recognized as ground-breaking and innovative for its connection to another game. IGN said that the game was highly ambitious[48] and called it the future of gaming, while PC Gamer praised the orbital bombardment mechanic and the unprecedented amount of customization available. Release
Upon release the game has received a lukewarm reception from critics. It has attained an average aggregate score of 64.67% on GameRankings and a 59/100 Metascore on Metacritic, indicating mixed or average reviews.
Criticisms were generally focused on the bugs and poor execution of the gameplay. IGN's Vince Ingenito stated that Dust 514's incredible depth and customization were eclipsed by its poor graphics and gameplay mechanics. Additionally, Ingenito criticized the way the game implemented the free-to-play business model, saying it took too long for players to get into the equipment that they wanted. He ultimately gave the game a score of 5.8/10, calling it mediocre. Destructoid's Chris Carter gave the game a rating of 6/10, calling it an ambitious and complex shooter that still needed "a ton of work". Among the aspects that he criticized were the underwhelming graphics, uninnovative game modes and tedious grind. Eurogamer reviewer Paul Dean wrote that Dust 514 has great potential but is "saddled with a very dull debut." Dean noted that despite having interesting factors, such as the metagame and social connection to Eve Online, the game itself was mediocre and contained many bugs. However Alex Locher of PlayStation Universe praised the unique nature of Dust 514, commending its technological accomplishments and meaningful player interaction. As Locher remarked, "Dust 514 isn't some superficial and meaningless military shooter; it's a pioneering endeavour of programming, technology and consumer communication that has already created something unlike you've ever seen in gaming".
Seems Dust 514 has been judged and found wanting.
Anyone who visits Wikipedia to look at the game will be greeted with a rather accurate account of the eve swept under the rug game that is dust 514, forever EVE's uglier bastard slightly touched child, the very afterbirth of CCP Ideas and marketing run amok. |

But why should i care what those people think? Most of them probably spent 2-4 hours playing then made the review.

Those reviewers are also mostly trying to judge DUST 514 as a game that only releases once like every other game on the market. I don't think most of them got the fact that DUST will never be finished and will have constant updates to the SAME GAME and not DUST 515, DUST 516 etc. That's a very important factor. |

Not true. BF3 open beta was just as bad as dust and released with a ton of bugs including comms that pretty much never worked (less than 10% of the time!!!!!1!!), disconnection issues, falling through map issues, spawn issues, and vein almost categorically unable to enter a game with your friends in a squad.
It took months after release to fix it. Many full blown bf expansions (10 bucks a pop) include 1 or 2 new weapons, 2 new maps and that's it.
Sure, BF3 is awesome now - but it took a lot of time and consumer money to be so. Just something to keep in mind... |

It gets quoted as an actual source when the sources its quoting are reliable sources.
Unless one forgets that, but then has the bloody chance of being labeled one of those people that when you take em outside and tell them "see it's day time", they then cover their eyes and say it's night.
Dust514 is exactly like EVE in that it tries to be a second job. One that does not pay. There fore one reserves the right to treat it as thus.
If it's weren't for the customization part of this, and my need to build the ULTIMATE NINJA COWBOY SCOUT DROP SUIT EVER MADE. ....EVER. I would have left this game.

In any case, as I've said in other threads, CCP is trying to keep this under the rug until they fix it, but a new hire to their company ****** the backend database so bad they're still trying to fix it weeks after the fact, and half the balance issues we have right now came from all the data other than Instant Battle being left out of the balance tweaks because no one realized it was messed up until it was too late.
Expect to see a DevBlog detailing this when they get it sorted out. |

Friend of mine in high-school demonstrated this not long before the Moderation Council was implemented.
He went to the George Washington page and typed "I like cheese" into the middle of a paragraph he selected at random.
It was 3 days before it was noticed and corrected. |

A few things here.
1. Nothing can be definitely claimed about the final state of DUST until it actually HAS a final state, which doesn't look like it will happen anytime soon - like in the next 10 years. Any comments about its current condition are purely that - the CURRENT condition of the game. And to be honest, I still don't believe it's ready for the release label CCP have already put on it, and they still haven't provided a satisfactory response to the legitimate complaints that were made about their "solution" to the Merc Pack problem.
2. Wikipedia alone isn't a reliable source, but if it cites reliable sources and you're willing to do the requisite legwork to check, it can be a source of reliable information, if indirectly. Most university professors at competent universities in civilised countries will NOT accept a Wikipedia article as a reference unless it's a backup reference to another source, or a "this source via WIkipedia" reference. In this particular instance, one of their sources is IGN, so... yeah. Not so much on the "reliable" part.
3. None of this is actually news in any way. The game doesn't feel finished, but as mentioned, even though it's officially "released", it's going to effectively still be in development for years to come. |

No college around my part of the world, Europe, will give credits for papers in which Wikipedia has been used as source. If it is seen to have been cited, the student will be told what to do with the paper.
It can be a very informative source through which an interested party could actually find reputable sites in which a subject matter has been properly researched and peer reviewed, these being what would be cited in a paper, but not Wikipedia itself, which is just a gateway site. For your own sake, don't ever use it in citations. |

Wikipedia shouldn't be cited in an academic paper (with a few rare exceptions) because it is created to reflect "general" or "common" knowledge on a topic. This mission precludes it from having the kind of specificity and depth you want. You can use the references provided at your own risk I suppose. I'm also not a huge fan of metacritic. I realize people like going to one place to get a single "grade/score" for something, but it is exactly this seeking of orthodoxy that encourages sequelization ad nauseam and general lack of risk taking in the entertainment industry as a whole.

The reason why its generally not a good source by itself is that the ability for many people to edit things on their own. So stupid topics can be easily edited by someone more malicious than the OP and goes into the article to change the content to match his soon to be posted OP topic. This is why many topics that are controversial are typically locked now.
A well noted example the subject of the Holocaust or 9/11 ever happening.
Now for you people trying to do college research papers and the sorts unable to use wikipedia, there is that last section, sources cited. That is the most invaluable part of wikipedia as it gives you books and sources to read up on the subject. Most of the time. |
