I've been playing for around 3 weeks and I'm not getting a sense that winning matters. Maybe I'm missing something that you vets can share. Is it all just about character development? |

No. You need to realise that the EVE universe is a never ending struggle for control and power.
There is no end to the game. You will keep playing and never finish until you've see it for what it really is.

The most important thing in any MMO is endgame content. Get there and do it. As for public gamemodes, kdr,w/l,warpoints, kills, they all get you nothing. The only thing getting your name of leaderboards does is it will get you hunted like a rare monster.
Skillup and get to endgame. Right now planetary conquest is endgame, next build it will be something else. The way things look planetary conquest, our current endgame, is broken a bit and will likely be fixed in time for the next build. By then new endgame will be introduced and probably be broken. |

character development. Or as I like to call it building your gundam. Yeah sure there are some games that are so close that you really want give your all in, and victory in those games are sweet. But that is few and far between. The gap between noobs and vets is too big.
You could get hired to ring for a corp, but even some corp battles are like glorified pub matches. very few are down to the wire. |

Because I've lost and yet still gotten 700k ISK. Because I've played a battle that was a 4v1 for the entire game, got 600k whilst they got about 100k each. Because I'm better than you. |

That's correct, when I first started playing I was hell bent on winning the match, but it didn't seem to matter. Would you say it's best to just focus on getting war points? |

WPs only get you SP (and isk, but not as useful) and even then you will have to deal with the cap until the weekly redose.
I think the question we should ask you is why are you playing the game, if you don't know what to do with it?

For maximum ISK gain? yes.
Every time something is destroyed, a percentage of the value is added to a pot (I can't remember how much is exactly added), at the end of the match, the WP is used as a percentage, so if you have 10 people on the team, and all of them have 100 war points, you get 10% of the pot each. Your goal in a match really is to gather as much WP as you can and wreck havoc and destroy as much as possible. When you have around 60% of the pot, it's lovely, trust me.
Edit: It also contributes to your SP gain at the end of the match, but you also gain SP based on how long you've been in the battle. Longer the battle, more SP. |

I think he was specifically asking about the difference between ISK / SP payout for a Winner with X WP, vs a Loser with that same X WP. I may be a bit off, but I think the Winning team gets 2/3 of the pot divided among them, while the losers get 1/3 of the pot divided among them, and your share is based on WP.
So in that sense, assuming your % of WP in your team is the same for each side, you get more for winning, yes. |

So in that sense, assuming your % of WP in your team is the same for each side, you get more for winning, yes. not even close to being true. winning has no effect on the "ISK pot" for destroyed assets that's divided that's based on WP it effect the passive you stood in the MCC ISK which is about 60k ISK difference in a full length skirmish match. |

Winning matters, because W/L is the end-all be-all stat.
I'm kidding, caring about stats in a game as broken as this, where I've countless times to bugs and glitches, is simply absurd. |

Don't listen to all these blowhards.
The battle is a lot more meaningful, read fun, if you play it like you mean it. This means not worrying about K/D ratios, about not making every dime of ISK possible, and all that crap. Seriously, you'll only make it to higher skill levels or into planetary conquest if you stick around, so find what's fun (and turns a profit).
Of course, if you don't have a squad or anything you'll be disappointed when most of your team is busy AFKing in the MCC or some other nonsense. |
