At 02:05 UTC June 2nd, CCP became aware of a significant and sustained distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS) against the Tranquility cluster (which houses EVE Online and DUST 514) and web servers.
Our policy in such cases is to mobilize a taskforce of internal and external experts to evaluate the situation. At 03:07 UTC, that group concluded that our best course of action was to go completely offline while we put in place mitigation plans.
While we initially reopened EVE Online and DUST 514, at 14:51 UTC we became aware of additional information led us to re-evaluate our decision. With the highest sense of precaution we took the decision to take Tranquility and associated websites back down for further investigation and an exhaustive scan of our entire infrastructure.
What we can now confirm is that a person was able to utilize a vulnerability in one of the back-end services that support the operation of the Tranquility server. This vulnerability has now been secured and thoroughly tested.
We would like to stress that at no time was customer data compromised or accessible in any way.
The effort of returning the complex server structure of the EVE Universe and associated websites to service in a methodical and highly-scrutinized fashion began hours ago and Tranquility has now been brought online (at 10:13 UTC). Our teams will monitor the situation carefully in the coming hours to ensure that our services are accessible and that all customer data remains secure.
We will be looking at ways to compensate players in both EVE and DUST for the outage and expect to announce what that compensation will be very soon.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our players on EVE Online and DUST 514 for their patience and understanding during this unexpected downtime and the investigation. We are grateful for your support, as always.
Regards, J+¦n H+¦r+¦dal J+¦nasson Chief Operating Officer CCP |

Honestly, best option is an SP event similar to the one we had just before Uprising was deployed. It helps everyone equally, helps newbies out of the low SP mire, and will sell a ton of active boosters. |

Thanks for the info guys. I was depressed that I couldn't play dust this past sunday, but a DDoS attack is definitely something that's beyond your control and not your fault. No compensation is expected just keep working hard to make dust an even better game than it already is.
Was thinking of getting a merc elite pack for my b-day to throw my hat in to support the effort. Hope y'all got things back under control over there. Peace out |

Wouldn't hurt IMO. I change mine every couple of months anyway because of being hacked several years back. |

I feel like the original post should have more likes. As much as people ***** and moan, I think most people only do it through a love for this game. For what it's worth, I think all of you at CCP are doing a great job and I look forward to supporting Dust and EVE for as long as I can. |

I think we can understand that its a b****ch of a job being a dev for a F2P game, and the first of its kind hybrid MMO FPS at that. Then you get a DDoS attack at fricking 2am on a weekend. I mean that just sucks.
So, not trying to be flattering or anything, but I can empathize. I hope y'all CCP folks catch the a-holes that did this and get some restitution for your losses. |

i was being serious about wondering when that next respec batch was coming... news on that was what i was primarily concerned about anyways. |

Wow...really? At least they announced comp. Don't see a reason for it. Well at least on the dust 514 side. But you will have many crying and demanding free stuff for not being able to play a free game. Go figure... One day isn't a funeral. take it as a server side patch. No biggie there. |

was the TAR REALLY that powerful? owch...
and Jhakl, i dont remember clearly from too much booze at the time of happening, but this is the exact reason why EVE players keep LONG skills in queues during and shortly after patch times... 40 day skill queues came in handy more than a couple times in EVE a few years back. |

though i admit, it is unusual that TQ gets DDoS'd, i dont think i can remember any times actually... i wanna say forums have been knocked out but i never used EVE Forums, and i dont recall it shutting down the game
Oh so true. Been there in my many years of EVE play back then. 2-3 month long skill trainers wr always queued up when a patch day waring was known. Hell i thought I broke something posting to the one crying about being selected as a Templar but couldn't get their high number kills without their SP spent in the class armor or whatever. It was a sad read and I hit the post button and poof it all went. I think it was about 10:30 ish or earlier give or take central US time when it all dropped. Just I think it's a sad thing when so many jump demanding compensation for unscheduled down time. Fees in EVE i understand for extended downtime. But on Dust being free and free... they need to just stop. |

yeah i dont remember the exact patches that were awful, i spent a lot of time in a perma-drunk state, was in okinawa at the time, so id get off work, crack a beer, throw in a queue before patch downtime, and wouldnt log back in for like a week... got a couple of my chars gall drone spec 5 doin that...
and yeah, the templar event... though i can understand the sentiment that they 'shouldnt be whininging because gear is a crutch' ... but at the same time... it made very little sense to me that these first gen templars were so gimped... the empress wanted them on her side, they must be good right? theyre first gen soldiers, they must have a lot of experience right? they knew everyone was gonna be out for their blood after the empresses declaration, they must have confidence in their capabilities right? all i really saw from CCP was that they didnt want proto tank templars running around, and 2m SP was their solution... or that they didnt want to hand out OP chars... that were to be deleted after 3 days... not to mention the PS Community templars probably needed the proto-crutch, assuming they had little to no experience with DUST 514, it would be interesting to know how many of them actually played their rounds or just simply ragequit. |

i understand the need for some kind of compensation. now i have not had the chance to log in yet as i'm at work, so i cant verify the accuracy of this, so if anybody is in the know please feel free to correct me. But if i had just purchased a passive/active skill booster, would i not have lost a full day from said booster during the down time?
if the answer to that is yes, then that is real world $$$ (Aur) that i'm out of pocket. it may be a minuscule amount of money, but it is real currency nonetheless. that would have to be compensated for.
how exactly? im interested to see. However I do like, and commend CCP for, how they have handled this unexpected turn of events, and their pro-activeness in addressing any potential fallout. |

I think I was expecting more of a heavy numbered prerendered armor and weapons for the Templar character added so SP wouldnt be a factor. Figured the weapons and armor would have been flagged to the added toon and numbers tweeked to give them the edge needed in combat. guess i'm thinking of high end stat gear and weapons flagged so they couldnt be traded into their accounts. But then looking at the rewards that wr changed from original posting. It was 300 each of the 4 armor sets and X number of weapons then changed to BPOs. So if the BPOs r a bit on the heavy stat side needing a good dose of SP to fit them cool, if not and only cosmetic then kinda lame.
ya would like to know how many actually played out the toons too. I personally over a good few hours on open saw 3 Templars but on my side and only 2 against in probably maybe 16 queued up insta battles. I might of killed one but think it hit as an assist. I'm pretty sure it will get extended due to the hack down time but not sure how many will jump back on them and run around. Saw some posts wr some wr crying that all they wr doing was giving away free awards cus the templar toons couldnt hold up. what's 2.5 m isk? I can pull that much easier playing normal then hunting them down and as far as thr reward score... you can easily pull 20k SP out of 20 insta missions without firing off a shot. So who's getting who's reward easier then the other?
ah well, not here to tick anyone off. Time to see if I can log in and get into a sniper battle. The other day i lined a sniper up and we must of fired at the same time both scoring head shots. I greyed out and watched him slump over... good times. |
