im lookin for a bit of advice.
im always trying to get better. every game i play in, i do my best to improve on something. a lot of the time, i fail miserably. a lot of the time, i wreck ****.
ive tried to reach out to lance and cubsfan, but never got a response. i would like to get some conversation going about heavy tactics. i would like to get some suggestions on how to play better. some of u heavies are better than me, and some of u have been wrecked in proto or advanced gear by me in my militia gear. but i wanna get better.
i would appreciate any advice u can offer, and maybe i can do the same. keep the trolling to a minimum, plz.
btw, im also open to some squadding up to get & give pointers if anyone is interested in that. |

I don't recall you 'reaching out' to me but I get a ridiculous amount of mails daily so could possibly have missed it. Biggest advice I can give is to be fearless. Learn your effective range for whatever weapon you prefer and as spongly said, avoid open areas cause 90% of players use either a tac or have absolutely no skill and u will be run over.
This game is all about mob warfare so lead the push to the enemy and identify the logis on your team and make them earn their keep :) |

I'm just getting into heavy myself so not alot of experience here but, I've found the above advice to be true. My addition to the convo is try and find a logi to follow you full time amd protect them as much as possible. I've also found that if you're playing solo as a heavy in a pub match and you push forward, trying to move the line, most of the blueberries won't follow no matter what space you've just secured. I've died so many times waiting for them to catch up I'm beginning to suspect I'm being overly optimistic... |

Use good gear.
Avoid running long distances.
Don't p*ssy out, See that group of 5 guys? Call them out wait for teamamtes to come closer for support, come in kill everybody while they are distracted by your team, or kill them when they are distracted by you. (Easy pickings for teammates to weaken them making them easy to kill).
Find a repper and stay with him.
Use Lavs off spawn in Skirmish and Domination. Running takes way too long.
Put some skill points into forge gun. Being good at AV is helpful to your team.
avoid being with your team unless your all really good or all Reppers, this will draw attention to you, and the biggest guy is always the first target.
You're not unstoppable but 1v1 or even 1v2 you 99% win.

-Try to take on 1 or 2 people at a time. (but you can bully entire squads yourself if you are smart)
-Defend, don't attack. You can make full squads back the hell up
-Bully everything. Nothing can take a good heavy. Intimidation alone can keep entire squads off a position
-Pick up a forge gun and start ruining those LAVs

I like using my heavy with a LLAV. For those dodgy players I simply get out of the car and mow them down. Other than that I don't have much experience as a heavy but will do because I'm respeccing full heavy because I love how the HMG can actually get me some kills (currently using the crappy assault SR). The above guys mentioned very good tactics so maybe we could talk about fittings? I'm aiming to use the sentinel dropsuit for the extra low slot. What about you? |

A heavy can't count on anyone. Ambush - if you can't Murder Taxi because of AV - then just get used to kill assists and staying next to blue blobs. We're pretty much useless without a forge gun or squad. CQC areas we still dominate - but it's all relative to your play style.
The most effective way to use heavies in pubs is go skirm and camp and objective you see the other team wants and learn choke points. We can bring down people quick who don't realize that objective has a dedicated heavy. And even if they do the nodes were almost made for us to use as great terrain advantage. I suggest equipping flux nades as they'll even help you bring down most LAV's quick and against infantry HMG is killer vs armor.
Get the Saga - it's less then 100,000 SP to aquire, put 1 shield extender, 2 PG upgrades, and a scanner. Always keep it near your objective. Al you need to do is hop on it for a second and activate scan to know where ppl are coming from - it comes back often to use too. IF you get into trouble it's also a great get a way vehicle or a vehicle you can use to close distance against pros who know how to hit an objective.
We're the hardest class to use in pubs - but we're necessary for PC. Keep strong. |

Some good advice above.
First of all I want it known that I don't run damage mods with my HMG. Forge gun is another story. With the new parameters of the heavy, I find myself with my forge in the start of matches. Removing installations is high priority. For multiple reasons. I'm always on the look out for tanks and drops. Once everything is removed, rejoining sqd with HMG becomes important but always go with the flow of battle.
Strafing will keep you alive longer then you'll realize.
Don't ever push forward without a full clip and flux.
Also as a heavy you need to be aware of your surroundings. Watch your corners and be thinking ahead. Where could someone infiltrate and flank around to your blind side. Survival is out thinking your opponent.
By now you will have noticed the hoppers. Scout will like to jump to your side/behind. So will other classes. Be ready for it and try to anticipate the jump. I will jump in the opposite direction and arc my lead. Usually by the time they hit the ground, they will be dead or very close.
Suit build is also important.

sorry man, when you wanted to run with me I was just not feeling DUST... like I would hit the cap and wait till next week to do the same.
Haven't played in 2 weeks for personal reasons.
There are different types of heavies out there, and you need to find your playing style. As everyone points out, avoid open areas... it might sound like a derp suggestion, but you'll be surprised at how much heavies make this error.
Map knowledge is key to surviving encounters...aka, always have an escape route in mind lol.
Keep in mind Pub fits SHOULD be different to competitive fits....unless you're going ballsout in every pub game :P
All this being said and all the advice people give, it's just about finding what works for you, trying new things, new approaches to combat, knowing when to push, when to hide, when to chase the kill, or focus on the objective instead. It's instinct, and being a situational class, our choices affects us more than others cuz we can't simply jump over a rail and run off.
Fortune favors the brave though, so you'll only get those "HOLY ****!" moments by getting yourself in the perfect position. Sometimes it works out, you get beasted

Both of those players also have lots of SP built up and run with really good squad mates. With my 2.8 million SP character I will be top 5 in just about every match I play because when I am operating in a group the whole group does better, which in turn lets me operate better. That is what you should focus on finding a group that supports your playstyle and get in with them. DUST is not a solo game and while this seems clich+¬, it really isn't. Sure you will meet those guys and get dominated from time to time that have millions more SPs than you do, but on average 6 people with lesser SP will be more effective than a bunch of random raspberries with lots of SP.
Eventually though, you will have millions and millions of SP as well and once you reach the cap in your class, playing with the same people and learning how you operate as a unit will be much more beneficial than latching onto another player in your class and trying to be like them. |

The use of cover and moving about smartly needs to be the focus of self sanity.
Forcing the opponents to be in an inferior position should be noble and just goals of a heavy suit trying to kill as many things as possible. While this normally means putting yourself in a superior position this is not always possible and you have to make due. |

First and foremost, you can't play a heavy like you used to in Chrome. When they said, defender, they meant defender. Get a squad mate to leave behind a few nanohives or hug a supply depot. Find a nice choke point where the enemy has to go through you to get to where they're going and collect kills. Positioning is absolutely key! Don't be afraid to use complex plates. You're going to be slower than molasses, but that extra survivability matters when you can mow down 3-5 guys without having to cower in a corner. Also, if possible, find a good logi to play with on the regular. Having someone around to repair you could mean the difference between 18-0 and 1-9 games.

holy ****, guys. thats some great advice!!
dont get me wrong, im hardly a newbie. im at 7.3 mil SP and have been rolling as heavy the entire time, and have been in dust since closed beta. (although i only played off and on then)
its just that i find myself missing the obvious sometimes. and that is unacceptable with my mindset of "never stop getting better"
@lance - yeah, i kno dood. im still hoping u wouldnt mind grouping up sometime, 1v1.
@everyone else: thx for posting and giving me these tips. i hope everyone who posted learned something from someone else while they were at it.
honestly, when i play, i wait for my comrades to drop an uplink b4 i spawn so i dont have to traverse the wild frontier. i run militia gear almost exclusively. i strafe (which is NOT easy to do as a heavy) i aim at faces, i crouch, i do actually find choke points, i do decently against those pesky scouts. sometimes tho......depending on the map or lack of good team mates.....i get absolutely smoked. i do have some good logis to play with, but some of them arent always on. and i am guilty of getting excited and bullrushing ahead without thinking lol
i dont use any modules except shield extender & recharger, and armor plates & repairer. im currently able to use complex repairer & recharger, but only advanced plates & extenders. i use the std smg as my sidearm, and was actually considering going into flux grenades (it dawned on me only recently that that might b a good idea. thats wut im talking about when i say i sometimes 'miss the obvious')
just a side question, btw.......wtf is the difference, if any, between the basic suits and sentinel? and if there is none (besides module slots) then wuts the point of having them? ive seen no difference other than how the slots are placed, so i was wondering if i missed something.

The sentinel suit is the joke of the heavy community. Utterly worthless and anyone who goes full proto in it deserves to be called a bad heavy.
I want to also remind you on how to use HMG - it has a slow turning speed but using R1 to aim makes a difference to your DPS. The trick is aim in front of there movements then using R1 for just a moment to get in some extra damage - never use it for more then a few moments. Strafing - as pointless as it seems for us - is still vital to making sure every bullet doesn't land on us. Every little bit helps in the competitive field. |
