might sound stupid one of my first gaming all-nighters was spent playing Final Fantasy: Chrystal Chronicles multiplayer. the one on gamecube where you hooked up your GameBoy Advance and used it as a controller. so epic! one of many though... |

LOL! You ain't Old timers.
You are all just young rookies compared to me.
I've been playing video games since the very first one came out., Pong in the 70's. Heck the very first FPS consisted of pointing an infrared gun at the TV and trying to shoot a square dot that bounced around like a Windows screensaver.
Best game... Adventure for the Atari 2600, now that was RPG at it's finest...in 1980. :D

Mario Bros. , countless times of being yelled at to turn it off and go to bed by the parents.. I hated the fact I could not save , but zelda could.. so I would try and grind the hell out of it to beat it lol.
However the one to truly suck me in and make me stay up for 24+ hrs even though there was no reason to because I could save.. Final fantasy, omg I found bliss. I could get lost for days just wandering around in every single release they have put out since lol.. the old lady now has found out in the least year how much I am addicted to it with FF14 online.
Which brings to the biggest relationship rocker of them all for me, Eve online in 2006.. On many numerous occasions has the bedroom door been locked, no dinner cooked for weeks , internet shut off, power shut off, beer throw on computer, computer monitor hit with hard object.. the angry woman of house list goes on and on with that game haha.. she doesn't understand the neccessity of 13 hr null sec patrols!! |

I just thought of a much better answer to the OP's questiion, the "old timer" title, threw me off a bit., back to when I was young. There was one game that got in my blood that I spent years on. in fact I have never stopped.
Many of thousands of hours have been dedicated to community content and modifications for one game.
In 2003, when I was 38, I bought a used copy of Neverwinter Nights. I went on to create a number of mods for the game. I was well-known in the NWN community for my ability and inginuity to combine and edit the game's tilesets. I created, built and ran single-handedly my own 300 area Persistant World game server during 2004. Several years ago I received Hall of Fame status for a game mod I created in 2006.
Because of my modding efforts in Neverwinter Nights I have learn't how to use a number of programs including:
Paint Shop Pro Photoshop GMAX and 3DSMax Linux Debian plus numerous editors and tools specific to NWN
Because of my experience with Neverwinter nights, I have done personal mods for Fallout 3 and The Witcher.
Last year when I turned 47, I started doodling around again in 3DSMax. The result so far has been some Doctor Who related items. Namely Tom Baker's Sonic Screwdriver,(to scale, over 10,000 polys). TARDIS interior console and walls, (3rd/4th Doctor) and a TARDIS itself that I'm still working on. Oh, and half an Imperial Dalek.
In Playstation Home, I own the name " Neverwinter" for my clubhouse (closed until I re-release my NWN server)
There you go a nice detailed account to the OP's question. :)
Cheers,

It was 1986, by the way, some of the respondents gave the year of their addiction, and that's a nice touch.
I played the **** out of Ultima IV, but I was too young to damage relationships. My brother an I took turns, one would map dungeons and support while the other played.
The one in this genre that really took my breath away was Descent. Damn I loved that game.
The one that has done the most relationship damage was farming my WoW PVP title back in the day. I only got to Lieutenant Commander, but that was a slog. I did help our guild leader to become the first Grand Marshal on our server though.

My family had a commodore 64 and turned the closet into a mini computer room, which was just big enough for a chair and a small table.. I think I spent more time playing the ultima's in that closet than being outside. Parents would joke about sending me to the closet to get me out of their hair. The ultima's were my first experience of exp/gold grinding and eventually hex editing to see if I could kill lord british. If I remember right, in 1 and 2 you could grind to be strong enough to kill him but the others had to be edited. And so began my anti social issues at a fairly young age, the game even helped teach me how to read. |

But Medieval: Total War was the first game that ever kept me up until the wee hours of the morning. For extra fun, I played it back before i understood the importance of upgrading video cards.
My game sessions consisted of pitting white triangles against other white triangles, and a map that was literally all white (so I had to more or less guess which region I was in).
I learned so many things enduring that. |
