I'll be straight forward in that I don't usually pay much attention to these sorts of things, but after a friend showed me this crap I was just a little blown away...this guy quite literally put about 0 amount of research, work, or editing into this review.
I mean, if you want to attack a game, at least start with the facts (there's plenty of things to criticize, even if you're a fan-bunny), but damn, this was just complete garbage.

All I heard was "wah wah this isn't casual gamer friendly wah wah this isn't cod" Yes Dust has it's flaws but I have enjoyed this game immensely, all you have to do is look past the bad and focus on the good. I believe you should never make a decision on a game based on the opinions of an online review. Always make your own decisions. |

Yup - that is why if they want to grow the game - the poor polish and such has to go. You have to hook people so they will invest the time and at the moment a regular gamer will see and feel a game that isnt on the level of any top shooters.
Then once they realize they have to spend a few days or weeks to get stuff they will bolt. |

I think the outright untrue statements are more of the concern for a lot of people. Think he said something about the Laser Rifle only being available for real money and something about a $5 Sniper Rifle that was really off base. |

dont misunderstand me: i like dust. its fun, most of the time, but it has massive issues all over the place.
the invisible BPO murder taxis, arbitrary range limitation, terrain and structures that are seemingly made of velco. i could go on and on but there's already a myriad of threads devoted to Dust's short comings.
i watched the review from the OP and the reviewer was dead on in his judgement of Dust.
my own friends have asked why I would waste my time playing such a crappy game.
CCP better wake the **** up and start fixing their **** or Dust is going to end up as just another failed shooter with big plans and an utter lack of execution. |

Scary thing it took him less than a day to pinpoint the glaring shortcomings of Dust as an FPS us FPS beta players have been pointing out for close to a year. Yet CCP decides to release the game which is clearly not ready for it.
CCP can only blame themselves for such atrocious reviews. |

Metacritic, strictly speaking, isn't a review site. It's a site which collects reviews together.
Even then it's not that reliable. Look at the second best game on PC, ever. |

I'm not going to argue about his opinions on the game. Here are a few issues I see:
"You can equip Light, Medium and Heavy Dropsuits...the numbers only move up or down a bit...the benefits are so minor it really doesn't matter which suit you pick."
BULLSHlT
"If you dropped $5 on a Sniper Rifle and die a certain number of times that rifle is out of commission until you dish out more dough. It's a devious way for players to waste money over and over again."
BULLSHlT
"You're spending points to unlock something that will let you unlock something else...It's a complete waste...The entire skill tree is structured in such a way that you're constantly dumping points into things you don't care about to get to what you want."
BULLSHlT
He says the laser rifle is only available by paying real money.
BULLSHlT
And the rest of it is pretty on point and I can't fault it. He chose to see more bad than I do but I can't really argue with what he says. Doesn't change those things above though. |

I said towards the middle of the closed beta that making this game Eve on the ground was a mistake. However, they proceeded to make dropsuit fitting just like fitting a ship in Eve, which is pretty much a spreadsheet and is bulky and cumbersome to use. That was a blatant mistake that a lot of people don't like about it.
They at least managed to put out a decent interface for the skill system, but like he said, it's still pretty much crap and is overbearing. Again, I said that they shouldn't just use the same method from Eve since, in my opinion and many others' who have tried Eve and don't like this part of it, it was a terrible idea.
And now they're not doing anything about certain portions of the metagaming that in most logical minds would be exploits, and people would start receiving temporary bans for using. This also turns a lot of people off.
Notice I went through all of that and haven't even touched on the gameplay itself, which is ok at best and delivers absolutely nothing new from other shooters and much less than other MMOs. Anyone who has even touched BF3 (the shooter mechanics pale in comparison) or Planetside 2 (the MMO feel of the game pales in comparison) should notice this immediately. Not to mention that all of the game modes are pretty much the same, so you can actually play for 5 minutes and pretty much get a feel for how the next month or two will be.
Some of his comments were dishonest and lies, but overall, he hit the nail pretty square on the head. CCP has made a half-decent shooter with an overly bulky and cumbersome skill and fitting system that should never have been implemented in the first place. Now the fanboys and "dust514potentialites" are surprised when other people don't like the game because of this. It's not rocket science. |

It's not. If you buy 100 AUR sniper rifles and you run out of them, you are out of them until you buy a new batch.
Not sure if there's a sniper rifle BPO, though.

It's not. Weaponry skill's only function is to unlock other skills - it has no other function. It is poor game design, and just a time sink to sell boosters. And it's not the only skill like that.
It's better than it used to be, though.
Yes, there were blatant mistakes in the review, but the main criticisms of the review were valid. |

There is a militia sniper rifle BPO, though, choosing to point out the aur items while not mentioning the isk versions with the same stats seems like highly questionable reviewing. If I were to take that statement in isolation from my knowledge of the game it would insinuate to me that real money was the only way to keep stocked in some weapons. This is functionally true. It's also true that equivalent, non aur versions requiring no real money investment are also available. |

If dust isn't going to be EVE on the ground then it probably shouldn't be touching EVE at all. And if the 2 games are to be divorced why even make Dust? The point of dust seemed to be not just creating another shooter in an overcrowded genre, but actually creating an extension of EVE. That being the case mechanical and social carry over not only is appropriate but is probably necessary.
I can appreciate the idea of people not liking EVE's, and by extension Dust's progression systems, but that said it somewhat begs the question, if you don't like the premise of eve or dust, why are you still here? |

trouble is we need those players to come and join the game on your first look with no info the game looks, plays and appears p2w
the other day i took a good ex BF3 player looking for a new fps and put him playing Dust without anything further than me saying its a great game
i game him a toon with 1.5mill sp set him off to play 5 games then to come out spend the skill points build a toon and try it again
after 5 games of getting stomped by proto's he set off to build his toon
first look at the market shows, he can use modules, weapons, dropsuits etc with much less skill points spent by paying some real money, he starts to build his toon and works out how little 1.5 mill sp is and how affective those Aur items are at saving you skill points and quits, off to find a new FPS game
An fps needs a fair fight, the bonus with Dust is that fair fight can come from gear and skill, a low skill player with great gear can be close enough to a good player with crap gear
the impact when you leave the academy is crazy, it goes from LAV everywhere to real games full of proto stompers
I have said it more than once, we need a skill progression system, just like mission running or ratting
you should earn better isk by being in better games, but you should earn isk not have it handed to you for turning up
I would like it to be based on system security of where you want to fight, so people who are low skilled can join easier games and people who can handle higher skills and higher geared players can play higher level games But this has to be player choice
A proto suit player can join a 1.0 security system fight and slaughter everyone in sight but as they are in crap gear they will make very very little isk, so its not worth running those games
a low sp and low geared player joining a high level game where they earn no war points as they cant compete earns nothing
Its important to add there should not be any restrictions based on SP or isk, let players decide what they want to do, if they can afford to run games and waste isk its their choice, if they want to
That means people can use Aur gear to get into higher level games without having to wait for the skill points, and it should mean we see very few good geared high skill players in with the low skill players - ok COD players will be there but they cant keep it up as they are losing isk |

It was the bullshit that was blatant and utterly unprofessional that got to me. It was completely unresearched and was chalk full of inaccuracies and skewed statements that would throw off anyone who read it from the truth. It's just an altogether poorly done piece.
I believe one of our own has made the best approach to this (although it was in response to destructoid's similarly bad review)
