The Only thing I heard while I was reading AlleyKats post.
As for a AAA-Shooter, it's quite literally an engineered ranking some high-end developers have acclaimed for themselves, but I suppose more often then not it simply means a large publisher and a big budget.
As for the doom and gloom, it's been passed around since the first days of the company. It's always there, but nothing is inevitable until it happens really...my advice would be two-fold. Ignore this Eve Bittervet Troll Captain-of-tomorrow for his intent, but be wary of his content. This is a very risky game in an even riskier industry, but pioneering has always been a dangerous business.
I for one, welcome the challenge
My reasons for unsubbing from are between myself and CCP. Professionalism dictates it will remain that way for roughly another 2 years.
Bitter veteran? Was never a veteran to begin with :)
This industry is very risky, that is true - generally speaking; for those who invest the amount of time required to play a game, only to have that game collapse under its own arrogance and assumption will not get that time back. Ever.
So the (rhetorical) question is this: how does one decide whether a computer game is worth their time?
If the personal answer to that question relates to 'because it will one day be the game I want to play'; than perhaps that time is not wasted. Of course, some peoples opinions regarding expenditure of time for a computer game versus other, more productive, avenues and pastimes can be argued 'till the trolls come home.

I can't find a single thing about this game that puts it up to the standard of whats considered a "normal AAA fps game".
Too me it still looks and feels like something that should still be in beta, going from there and calling this an AAA launch is, well, odd. Am I missing something?
(And no, I'm not going into specifics, those can be read all over these forums and any experienced FPS player should identify them from the start.)
It is called a AAA shooter because the CEO of CCP is like most CEOs a buzz word guy.
Essentially a year or two ago CCP had a rough patch...lots of people were laid off and a game which they had in development was discontinued.
This is a restructuring because they were bleeding money...really no other reason for it. Anyway along with the restructuring they got a CEO who says all the right things in buzz word jingo....this is not a bad thing it just is. Anyway Dust as you can tell did not get cut...i am guess it did not get cut because the new regime felt it could be repositioned as popular FPS and could get a deal with Sony (and prominent place on Sony's PSN). AAA shooter, eSport, focused 1 year 3 year 5 year plans...all part of justifying Dust, and warding off the Axe. |

LOL. I'm so tired of listening to all the whiny haters. As if most of you have any idea what it takes to run a company or develop and run a large scale system.
Are there plenty of things that need fixing? Sure. Are they terminal? We'll see... but I doubt it.
I have to wonder if all you whiners are just crappy players getting pwned all the time. Waaah, the game sucks, it's horrible, because better players than me are kicking my arse.
Heh, maybe not, but then I really don't understand your motivation. If you had a positive motivation you might consider taking the time to provide constructive criticism. Either you don't care to or you are so conceited you think you know more about what CCP should do than CCP without experience or background.
Congrats on having an opinion. The bar to entry on that is pretty damned low isn't it? |

Wrong... CCP laid of 20% of their staff worldwide, mostly from the Atlanta office which was developing the WoD MMO. This was a reaction to the Incarna riots, which made CCP realise that their resources were spread too thin, and they couldn't develop for EVE as effectively as they wanted to.
In any case, WoD didn't get cut, instead, it's being worked on at a slower pace. Moreover, the current CEO (Hilmar what's-his-face) has been the CEO for some time, instead of only coming in in 2011.
In essence, NO GAME has stopped being development at CCP. Ever. |
