Actually, I find this game comparable to BF3. If you don't well, sorry Mr. Troll
Other than the fact both have crosshairs and players, there is no comparison. If you meant graphically, dear lord are you sorely mistaken sir. |

I would estimate Dust did cost around 10-20 Mill, which makes it a AAA by the loose budget definition, ofc a really in-expansive AAA FPS game :p If i remember correctly Planetside 1 did cost around 10 Mill, so i personally think the result is better than PS1 given the budget?
Other than that a "real" AAA title needs a "AAA" team, since u obviously cant just throw money on such large titles and u also cant just "simply" buy talent in the gaming industries, except if a studio might be broke and u can snag its team cheaply :p
So i would be interested on what other console FPS titles did the Dust team worked on?
On a side-note i'm glad they did not blow a higher AAA budget, since it would be really hard to get a 100+ Mill budget back, which would hurt CCP overall. CCP is good at making niche games, for a loyal and well paying hardcore audience.
CCP would not be able to operate a $100 mill budget - they get $65 mill from EVE subs + Ancillaries per annum, and their operational costs keep increasing.
Only way CCP can be more profitable would be to cut back on developing new things for EVE, and focus on a few years of fixing EVE instead of increasing the total sum of EVE by new content - whether that is PS3 or Desktop based development scheduling of resources.
EVE does not need new content, there is more than enough content there to cover the mean average of subscription time for a MMORPG and the playerbase.
DUST, in my humble O, should not need to exist and now that CCP has overstretched themselves and put (pretty much) all of their eggs in one basket, I fear the most for the future of that company.
In other words, the cost of maintenance for EVE (and now DUST) will outstrip the revenue it will generate - and with each new 'thing' they put into new eden, this gets closer and closer to self-annihilation.
Sure, they could borrow money - but that would make them a target for buy-out as investors sell the assets royal once they realize the ticking bomb.
Things that need to happen which they cannot afford to do:
Improve EVE exponentially by fixing everything which is wrong with it. Improve DUST by the same yardstick of excellence Fully develop and release WoD to modern-day standards with good-to-go gameplay from day zero.
If CCP could afford to do the above, not even the speed-nerf would've happened in 2008 because that wound would never have existed in the first place and had a titanium shield around it.
Most game studios release a brand-spanking new game every 18 months...CCP have released 2 games in 10 years. If you concede DUST and EVE are one, then it's one game. One.
The future does not look good for a games company which releases a game that looks like it was last-generation technology, when the exact same game engine is used by other studios to create games which compete graphically with Frostbite engine +Žt all.
If CCP did not care about the visual appeal of DUST - why use one of the best engines out there so poorly?
And then make the animation terrible.... And the UI.... And the [insert terri-bad opinion without getting banned here]
triple A game? Gimme a break...
Peeps were discussing the low quality of the game whilst in beta; and peeps were using that excuse as a shield. "its a beta - the final game will look soooo much better with higher-resolution textures etc etc etc"
Last laugh is the longest btw.
Oh, wait - I forgot about the new shield being used by everyone about this game "it's revolutionary!" and the obligatory "its ambitious!" and also the puzzling "no other games company has attempted something like this before!" - none of these comments mean anything other than log-lines to a script prepared by a PR company for trade-shows and interviews .
Peeps who know/knew me will know I hate argument by analogy, but, just because no one has created a banana-flavored cheeseburger before does and will not mean it tastes nice...even if it was given away for free, like this game had to be, because no one would buy something so ill-conceived and poorly-implemented.
Whatever the budget for this game is or was - it needed several millions more to make it anything which closely resembles a triple-A game. |

Be more positive, i really think CCP will do fine even if Dust turns out to be less profitable than expected. EvE still pulls in good money and i don't see this changing any time soon. So they could afford this "experiment", while having a good chance to expand the EvE franchise. I'm also not sure how much they got from Sony to make it PS3 exclusive, but probably not this much to make a difference.
All in all i still think it is a reasonable try to expand EvE and CCP as company and on the operation costs, those should be manageable, since CCP has 10 years of experience managing and expanding a online game. They can still always cut costs or close Dust, but at what 10k server population Dusts infrastructure is bloody cheap!
I think the general idea to somehow create a game that fits into the EvE universe and creates some direct/indirect interaction between the 2 games is a good idea, i don't think creating a PS3 exclusive FPS game in 2013 with a inexperienced team is the best approach to this overall goal :p In particular im not sure if Unreal3 was the best choice here, but than again a few years back there was no CryEngine3 or Unreal4 and CCP had to license some engine, given the lack of console know-how and time.
Lack of time? They were already planning DUST back in '07 - that's SIX YEARS AGO, and 'this' is what they deliver to a modern-day audience?
The more content you add to a game, the more it costs to maintain that content; every model therefore not only has to be created by an artist, modeller, animator + any SFX/Particle Systems relevant/specific to that one model; you then have to maintain it and update it in the future when the graphics requires it, like when DX11 came out in 2009 - oh wait, CCP didn't do anything about that 4 years ago, due to the overwhelming cost it would entail...
So...with this all in mind, you gotta try and understand the mindset here: CCP cannot (or barely) afford the upkeep of EVE and DUST to AAA standards - my point is: this cost every year rises, but it rises faster than the revenue it generates.
Once revenue generated from EVE/DUST becomes lower than the cost of development - game over.
And I'm yet to see or read any evidence that tells me they are sailing in the right direction.
As the Icelandic saying goes "A fish rots from the head down".

The Only thing I heard while I was reading AlleyKats post.
As for a AAA-Shooter, it's quite literally an engineered ranking some high-end developers have acclaimed for themselves, but I suppose more often then not it simply means a large publisher and a big budget.
As for the doom and gloom, it's been passed around since the first days of the company. It's always there, but nothing is inevitable until it happens really...my advice would be two-fold. Ignore this Eve Bittervet Troll Captain-of-tomorrow for his intent, but be wary of his content. This is a very risky game in an even riskier industry, but pioneering has always been a dangerous business.
I for one, welcome the challenge
My reasons for unsubbing from are between myself and CCP. Professionalism dictates it will remain that way for roughly another 2 years.
Bitter veteran? Was never a veteran to begin with :)
This industry is very risky, that is true - generally speaking; for those who invest the amount of time required to play a game, only to have that game collapse under its own arrogance and assumption will not get that time back. Ever.
So the (rhetorical) question is this: how does one decide whether a computer game is worth their time?
If the personal answer to that question relates to 'because it will one day be the game I want to play'; than perhaps that time is not wasted. Of course, some peoples opinions regarding expenditure of time for a computer game versus other, more productive, avenues and pastimes can be argued 'till the trolls come home.
