Yes, lack of time. CCP goes for quality of game, simply because they love the universe. Why is that relevant, you ask? I'm glad you asked such a good question.
Their first engine was the Carbon engine. It was used for the 2009 reveal trailer, and again for the 2011 trailer, where the merc gets off the dropship and the Skyfire cannon is revealed. It was pulled from parent code from EVE Online, and was actually very pretty. On the other hand, it was horribly taxing, and could literally destroy your PS3 from its hardware requirements.
Unfortunately, yes, the Carbon engine was still being used in 2011. So, within a year, they managed to switch engines to the Unreal 3 AND get the basic playability to the point where they could have an open beta. Within six months of that, they released it to the general public. Within five months of that, they release a major content update in PC, a few racial dropsuits, new weapons, with a whole new vehicle type nearly ready to be deployed. All that while developing future content for the game, such as jets, speederbikes, the rest of the racial dropsuits, the rest of the racial weapons, m-tacs, etc.
IMO, all things considered, CCP have done a great job in getting this content to us. They have made mistakes, such as core mechanics and balance issues, but the amount of time they've spent developing this content, and just how quickly they've managed to get it out, is nothing short of inspirational.
That said, they have a long way to go. |

Essentially a year or two ago CCP had a rough patch...lots of people were laid off and a game which they had in development was discontinued.
This is a restructuring because they were bleeding money...really no other reason for it. Anyway along with the restructuring they got a CEO who says all the right things in buzz word jingo....this is not a bad thing it just is. Anyway Dust as you can tell did not get cut...i am guess it did not get cut because the new regime felt it could be repositioned as popular FPS and could get a deal with Sony (and prominent place on Sony's PSN). AAA shooter, eSport, focused 1 year 3 year 5 year plans...all part of justifying Dust, and warding off the Axe.
Wrong... CCP laid of 20% of their staff worldwide, mostly from the Atlanta office which was developing the WoD MMO. This was a reaction to the Incarna riots, which made CCP realise that their resources were spread too thin, and they couldn't develop for EVE as effectively as they wanted to.
In any case, WoD didn't get cut, instead, it's being worked on at a slower pace. Moreover, the current CEO (Hilmar what's-his-face) has been the CEO for some time, instead of only coming in in 2011.
In essence, NO GAME has stopped being development at CCP. Ever. |
