Imagine this scenario for a moment:
After hearing about Dust 514, Joe decides to go ahead and download it from PSN and give it a try. First he lets it install and while the game is patching itself he reads the patch notes, but really has no bearing on what was changed because he's never played the game before. It's nonetheless slightly intriguing. Once the game is ready to go, he picks a race and sets foot in his room for the first time. He assigns all of his skill points to wherever it seems to make sense, and jumps into battle. ... Something's not right. The controls don't feel completely right, he's getting killed really quickly, and he doesn't seem to be putting out the same damage as everyone else around him. He fears that he may have made some mistakes in his skill point placement, or perhaps missed out on something else really big. Since he's pretty much clueless, he decides to go on the internet and and look for the official Dust 514 forums. In the Rookie Training Grounds, he introduces himself as a new player and writes about 3 meaty paragraphs worth of his own personal experience and seeks the advice of those around him. After a few trolls tell him to aim better and HTFU, someone useful decides to explain in depth what he did wrong and how he might be able to correct the problem. He thanks this helpful person, and goes back to playing Dust 514, renewed in spirit.
Question 1: At which point did Joe become the most important player in Dust 514?
Answer: When he joined the forums and poured his heart out in the Rookie Training Grounds.
Here's another important question: What's the single most important statistic in Dust 514? Well, unfortunately it's one that we may never know. Have you ever wondered how many players have taken the time to download Dust 514, waited through all the updates, assigned skill points, then had a horrible experience during battle, vowing never to play the game again? We'll probably never know how many players we lost to that single bad experience, but we do know one thing: Players who take the time to visit the forums and give feedback about their first experience should be treasured and given the warmest welcome. They beat the odds. They showed that they care enough to give the game a chance and not just delete it from their PS3 after one bad experience.
Make sure you always recognize the Rookie Training Grounds rant posts as coming from this game's most valuable asset, regardless of how frustrated or angry the player is. |

Even I don't troll Training Grounds.
There has to be some sanctum people can turn too to seek help. I'd like to think everyone agrees with that. |

This post is my new favorite. So true, in every aspect. I'd much more prefer a new player that isn't afraid to ask a 5 word question, than a newbie that wants to find out everything for themselves (I'm a bit hypocritical, but I've asked for help before *cough* Corp *cough*).
To answer your question about the most important statistic: Intelligence. Mind over matter, that's what DUST is all about. For a smart player, that is. :P |

Oh hang on they all stopped recruiting because they think joe is a spy Ah yeah, that's a good point. I wanted to mention that one of the main reasons I kept playing is because I always join squads, have my mic on, and I made a lot of friends that way. I didn't mention it because I didn't want to talk about myself, but having the theoretical helpful person mention that would've made my post better.
I also don't troll on Rookie Training Grounds, and I've seen a lot less of it since I started playing a little over a month ago. I can't always help, especially not with the numbers, but occasionally new players ask about something I have some experience with and I'll answer. |

So wait a sec ... am I reading this right? The trolls go anti-troll in the Rookie Training Grounds?!
I don't want to live in this world anymore xD
On a more serious note, I completely agree with the OP. This game is hard enough as it is without all the bugs and broken jazz. Props to all the newberries who stuck it through. |

I agree, and encourage everyone to get everyone else on the forums!
I think CCP could do a very smart move, and by posting a in a stickied "my experience in Dust" thread, new players would unlock a skinweave suit of their choice. |

Yeah, if ps home can give something for dust away, a reward for getting on the forums makes more sense. I agree with the OP, the game is daunting without help in understanding. And since there is little help in game, they should be motivated to come here. (corp recruitment, understanding fittings, AUR) |

I agree with OP and in a way to support the influx of new players, I would like to see a way to browse the forums from the patching and installing UI as well as the Mercenary Quarters rather than just patch notes as it may help point new players in the right direction faster and give old hands a way to quickly refer to current mechanics and stats while helping or trolling other players. My PS3 has a CPU, why not a web browser that works, in game, like Eve.
Two cents given in honor of the most valuable players in game.
Edited to give OP credit where it is due |

Trolling in training grounds is to CCP like can flipping in newbie systems, won't be tolerated and shouldn't.
In any case CCP knows they'll never get _all_ people who try their games, cause it's the kind of players that stick to their games that make their games so great. |

Beyond the disagreements, which are beeing discussed in your other thread i completely agree. In a game this hard and complex any information that is not communicated in game is bad for NPE.
What's the range of my gun? What's the recharge delay on my suit after mods/skills? What's my turning rate? Players are left wondering about some of the basic workings of the game and are not given chance to understand why they die in certain situations. That leads to frustration and untimately to resignation. |

From your linked topic:
Utsuru Kaiju wrote:My point is this, CCP: stop with all the bells and whistles. Stop with the shiny add-ons for one second and fix your game for the long haul. The aiming is terrible, especially with a mouse, the hit detection is incredibly inconsistent, and the frame rate is not acceptable. Please, if you want people to pick up your game and be impressed, these issues will need to be addressed first, mark my words. I completely agree, and I think that relates to my other topic than this one, however. https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=79856&find=unread |

Agreed. I stayed playing just because I was looking for a MAG fix and didn't have the finances at the time for BF3 and what not. I grew to understand it. It was not easy. We were all there at one time. If you know a Joe looking for logi help send them my way.

they have battle academy now.. but there will still be games there where alts who know how2fit are owning them..
or they could just get good and stop playing like crap before blaming it on everything but themselves.. if you can read and do basic math you should be able to figure out the skill tree, but that there filters out many gamers..
dust is really not for the masses, nor should it be. but we've reached the 8k population mark yesterday. |

Oh hang on they all stopped recruiting because they think joe is a spy Yep, pretty awesome that one of the people appointed to help players by being a liaison between CCP and the community is largely responsible for new players being locked out of such an important element of the game.
Not even the training corps were safe.
Not to derail what is probably the best topic started today. We can discuss removing the CPM member responsible in a different thread. |
