Imagine this scenario for a moment:
After hearing about Dust 514, Joe decides to go ahead and download it from PSN and give it a try. First he lets it install and while the game is patching itself he reads the patch notes, but really has no bearing on what was changed because he's never played the game before. It's nonetheless slightly intriguing. Once the game is ready to go, he picks a race and sets foot in his room for the first time. He assigns all of his skill points to wherever it seems to make sense, and jumps into battle. ... Something's not right. The controls don't feel completely right, he's getting killed really quickly, and he doesn't seem to be putting out the same damage as everyone else around him. He fears that he may have made some mistakes in his skill point placement, or perhaps missed out on something else really big. Since he's pretty much clueless, he decides to go on the internet and and look for the official Dust 514 forums. In the Rookie Training Grounds, he introduces himself as a new player and writes about 3 meaty paragraphs worth of his own personal experience and seeks the advice of those around him. After a few trolls tell him to aim better and HTFU, someone useful decides to explain in depth what he did wrong and how he might be able to correct the problem. He thanks this helpful person, and goes back to playing Dust 514, renewed in spirit.
Question 1: At which point did Joe become the most important player in Dust 514?
Answer: When he joined the forums and poured his heart out in the Rookie Training Grounds.
Here's another important question: What's the single most important statistic in Dust 514? Well, unfortunately it's one that we may never know. Have you ever wondered how many players have taken the time to download Dust 514, waited through all the updates, assigned skill points, then had a horrible experience during battle, vowing never to play the game again? We'll probably never know how many players we lost to that single bad experience, but we do know one thing: Players who take the time to visit the forums and give feedback about their first experience should be treasured and given the warmest welcome. They beat the odds. They showed that they care enough to give the game a chance and not just delete it from their PS3 after one bad experience.
Make sure you always recognize the Rookie Training Grounds rant posts as coming from this game's most valuable asset, regardless of how frustrated or angry the player is. |

EnglishSnake wrote:Hang on you also forgot about the guy telling him to find a good training corp or a corp in general
Oh hang on they all stopped recruiting because they think joe is a spy Ah yeah, that's a good point. I wanted to mention that one of the main reasons I kept playing is because I always join squads, have my mic on, and I made a lot of friends that way. I didn't mention it because I didn't want to talk about myself, but having the theoretical helpful person mention that would've made my post better.
I also don't troll on Rookie Training Grounds, and I've seen a lot less of it since I started playing a little over a month ago. I can't always help, especially not with the numbers, but occasionally new players ask about something I have some experience with and I'll answer. |

From your linked topic:
Utsuru Kaiju wrote:My point is this, CCP: stop with all the bells and whistles. Stop with the shiny add-ons for one second and fix your game for the long haul. The aiming is terrible, especially with a mouse, the hit detection is incredibly inconsistent, and the frame rate is not acceptable. Please, if you want people to pick up your game and be impressed, these issues will need to be addressed first, mark my words. I completely agree, and I think that relates to my other topic than this one, however. https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=79856&find=unread |
