Couldn't we technically exist just as data somewhere? Is there a lore that explains how our consciousness 'exists'? It would be interesting if we could exist in some cyber-world.Caprica style. We could even haunt the subsystems of enormous ships and wreak havoc. |

If you want a great (albeit dated) example of what happens to us I suggest looking into Paranoia, an old table-top RPG which... bears more than a few parallels to Dust's lore if that intro video from previous builds is to be believed. |

Where do mortals ( or humans or regulars or 'one-offs', whatever you call'm) exist when not 'in body'?
I hear they've been asking that question for a long time too.
We are not our clone. We are not even all the clones that we own, lined up on racks in CRUs and storage facilities throughout the cluster.
We are, as you allude to, that digital ephemeral unbroken stream of conciousness that abides between the stargates, waiting for the empty shell to receive us

The eve lore can explain most things. Hell, the short story's and chronicles can draw you in for hours of reading, if thats your thing.

What the OP probably is meaning that where are when we are not in battle. What I have figured out is that we have two types of clones, the battle type, which are exclusively for battles only, and are so maximized in efficiency that they aren't practical to use out of combat. When not in combat, we jump on our "off-duty" clones which are just regular clones with a coat of armor on. And if you happen to have an EVE account, you can always create a character there as your mercenary to actually have a face.
As for living in computers, I remember some corporation in New Eden who excels at AI technology, and it's CEO lives entirely in a computer. I need to look a bit more. |

Techno babble is bad.
All you need to know is that there are clones of you that receive your personality and memories when you die.
That is it. Nothing more. Technically they could activate countless clones of yourself at once using saved data, but that would cause chaos in the world.
That is it.
The more complex the explaination of something that hasn't been done before, the more BS it is. |

And how do you know that drunken techs haven't accidentally sent one person out in 50 clones before? Are you in fact a drunken tech trying to deny your actions? |

Also in terms of collecting memories...I haven't thought about it before, but what would be the difference between merging accumulated memories from one merc and concurrently accumulated memories from multiple mercs. It seems to me that it would be a much more efficient way to train a mind if you could have them go out and train themselves for 5 hours 100 men at a time getting 500 man hours of training in...
The accumulated learning experience with the many may not have the same multiplied affect as 500 sequential layered experiences, but you would probably be more knowledgable by an order of magnatude after merging the 500 hours worth of memory from only 5 hours worth of work...?
Next generation in Aurum based training anyone? Pay to have clones simulating your actions in a virtual training environment for EVEN MORE SP!! |

While the citizens of new eden have made great strides in A.I and have even conquered the jovian and sleeper methods of transporting consciousness between specially prepared clones. If I recall correctly there are still complications when trying maintain a full personality in a purely digital state. And after even a short time they become unstable and often damaged beyond any salvaging or further transfers. |

I imagine the first time you die in Dust it would have been in your real birth given body and from then on you transferred consciousness from clone to clone.

The tech scans your brain and simply places everything like it was. Because brains develop differently from person to person this is why moving your consciousness to a completely different persons clone is a bad idea, like sticking the circle peg in the square hole. Now, in terms of sending all your clones out then trying to condense it. Let's say the brain simply puts new memories in order in your brain. The tech simply copies and doesn't re arrange so when you try to remerge, you're just rewriting over those same parts of your brain, it like writing by hand a story then deciding I need to write farther back so I just start writing on top of what I just wrote because I wasn't using a computer and could insert and move text.
