I always wander over to the window to get a good look at the planet I'm going to be dieing (repeatedly) on. Recently though, I've noticed that what I'm looking at doesn't have much bearing on what I see when I land. Even if the continents of the planet are completely green, I'm generally on a brown map.
I thought the map themes were supposed to support the individual planet? So even if the maps are the same, the theme or mood gives the impression that this set of identical terrain is on this planet because the colors match what I was seeing from orbit. And the cloud cover (ie no clouds means blue sky, lot's of clouds mean a cloudy skybox), and eventually day/night.
So what gives? given that we're fighting on temperate planets, the maps should be predominantly green, with browns, greys, and sands being the exceptions. From what I'm seeing, the exact opposite is true. Is this by design? I mean, each district has a set of coordinates on the planet. It should be easy to do an evaluation of the map texture at those coordinates and assign a theme that complements it. Right now it looks...random.
If a dev has a couple of moments, I'd like a quick explanation on how map themes are assigned. I want to be sure I understand the basics of how the system works before I start making wild suggestions on how it can be improved. |

I believe having the look of the planet from orbit match the look of the planet from the ground is something on the to-do list but isn't implemented yet. That being said, take a look at Earth from Orbit.

It sure looks pretty darn solid green from around the eastern edge of Texas all the way to the Atlantic, but I drive by several locations in that region that are mostly brown. |

Oh granted, but that's realistic but counter-intuitive. Given the choice, in this game, I'd rather it was intuitive but unrealistic. |
