Prolly not gonna try DUST again until i hear back from ccp in my email, cant risk a free game taking my good phatty friend. I'm only afraid CCP will see this and think it's just an old ps3 about to YLOD and I'm 99% sure that is not the case. In any event maybe the build is just running the system harder than before and making my gpu get too hot combined with old heat sink paste. Will replace that tomorrow as it is the only thing that could be wrong on my end I can see after all the testing I've done. |

That's the most disappointing thing. It's so close to the PS4, and because of someone's crap code, I have to make a crap decision. |

I got the YLOD on my phat ps3 last month. I took it to my local video game shop where a guy fixed it and everything has been good since. No changes in software or play time whatsoever. I dont have the YLOD, the game just shuts off, beeps, red light blinks, go to press to turn on, beeps again turns solid red, touch to turn on again and turns green and turns on as usual and goes to xmb. you will not get to the xmb with a ylod ever. I'm telling you it's YLOD cuz I had this VERY problem a few months ago. Shuts off randomly and beeps a few times. Turn it back on, no problem. I guarantee you that you can play games on discs for a while but ANY game running off your HD will crash. Soon you won't be able to play disc based games either. Your old PS3 is seeing its last days. Yea mine died slowly. It first shut off randomly like months before I even took note. I thought it was some random thing. The it started to get more frequent, and soon I can't play games on HD without crashing.
From the start of symptoms, to it's death :( ... i would say it was 4-5 months. |

I suggest restoring the ps3's file system and rebuild the ps3's database
Quick how-to: 1. press and hold power button until the ps3 turns off 2. press and hold power button until the ps3 beeps twice in a row 3. Your ps3 should go into a menu just press Restore File System 4. Once finished re-do steps 1-3 except press Rebuild Database
Your ps3 should run a bit better. I suggest doing this every once in a while.
Also remember to clean your ps3. |

Hello everyone,
Our teams were able to reproduce this on slow Hard Drives (on old versions of PS3). In case you are experiencing any performance issues - low FPS, latency or audio stutter, we advise you to rebuild database, restore PS3 system or if you are able to - replace your hard drive. As mentioned previously as well, clean your console to avoid overheating in general in case it is an old model!
Thank you. |

I haven't been able to play enough Uprising on my Day 1 release phat Ps3 to get any issues thanks to the "******" up controls they did in Uprising.
Idd be happy if it died while actually playing, and any PS3 would wanna go out like that, not screaming and crying as you throw a fully functional PS3 onto the garbage heap because the PS4 came out. |

bought my ps3 from the auction site, 6yo seconded handed, disk drive not working, for thirty quid.
took it apart, cleaned it out, apply arctic silver 5, and runs better than new.
if you are used to building computers / taking apart things you can do this easily.
it will improve DRAMATICALLY the cooling system, and your ps3 will never overheat.
i have been playing uprising. my ps3 is cool as **** and the fan NEVER turned up. |

How old?
I currently have a 3rd generation fat ps3, basically the last fat ps3s before the slim ones came out and I only have audio stutter. Just curious if I should be concerned or not

Unless you have done a complete reballing, it's not a permanent solution. A reflowing, as it is called, can last for anything between a few months to a few years.

Thanks for feedback, glad to see its not all the phatboys. Thing is, i took it all apart today, cleaned it head to toe, put it back together, and same thing. Tested on other games and hasnt done it. Maybe Uprisging is making the ps3 run harder or something. Might try to apply new heat sink gel tomorrow and see if thats a problem then, just wierd its not doing it on any other games for me at least so far. That is a likely situation. Be glad you have this chance to back up your data. I paid someone to fix mine ($80) mostly because when you get YLOD there are very few ways to save your data and transfer it to a ps3 slim, since you can't operate your current ps3. And you can't just plug your hard drive into a new ps3 because when you do that, it auto formats it! I've had this problem too, and I never figured out how to make a backup. If the hard drive is attached to a computer, the comp gets ****** up more or less. One machine froze a few minutes, while another got totally corrupted and had to be reformatted! I did this for a friend, but he didn't care much about his saved games, so I skipped looking for a backup solution. Have you found out something?

I'm sorry to say this but it's not just the PhatBoy systems that are turning off at random intervals. My PSlim3 320GB (DustBundle) system has done this once since the Uprising and several times before. It is in a well ventilated area and has brand new (Christmas) parts.
It turned off as I was logging into Uprisisng for the first time on the day it released right after the patch. Also it has not turned off like that since.
I did not rebuild the database or any of the other fixes just took a deep breath and turned it back on. I think the deep breath really helped because the game has worked F.I.N.E. since. I say fine because there are other glitches not covered by this post that occur on a daily basis. |

ATTENTION ALL OWNERS OF THE PHAT PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3)
The new Uprising build seems to push the PS3 hardware near its limits, which puts a strong stress on the hardware material, and thus your old machine is at high risk of getting the infamous Yellow light of death (YLOD).
Look here to find out exactly wich machine you have (and other nice secrets about the PS3). If you have any of the backwards compatible machines you are at most risk, and to a little less degree if you have the CECHG or CECHH. If you have any later you are mostly safe, but all fatties are prone to break.
The YLOD is the result of a combination of insufficient cooling and weak solder.
Both the Xbox360 and PS3 were rushed. The 360 because MS was dead sure that the PS3 was to be released early 2006 (which was the plan for long, but the development of the Cell BE was delayed and became full of problems near the end and basically screwed the PS3, among Ken Kutaragis hybris, but that's another story), and they wanted to be first in the next gen. The PS3 because they didn't wanna be too late (they didn't really need to by themselves, the PS2 still sold good, but they had already triggered the competition to go next gen, so they had no choise). So they stuffed in hotter components than what was suitable, and hoped for the best. But it was also very expensive, which lead them to be parsimonious in regards to some details. Airflow wasn't sufficient. The fan was later changed to a model which is believed to be faulty in design and rotate hot air. The thermal paste and pads are of bad quality and does transfer heat very well, and morevoer tends to dry out after about 3 years and severely limits the cooling ability. This is why most phat PS3s have died not so long after their third birthday. The second part is weak soldering. At the time, a new European union directive took effect, which restricted the use of lead among other materials, in electronic devices. This only applies to EU of course, but to save costs of having two different manufacturing processes, the manufacturers implemented it worldwide. This was nowhere near any surprise for the industry, but despite this, the industry struggled against, and waited for the longest to implement it. This meant that the electronics manufacturers had little to no experience of making lead-free solders. This lead (hehu) to solders made in this time were not so sturdy and durable as they used to be. This haden't had to be the case if the industry took action earlier, and perhaps if Sony and MS gave the manufacturers a few more cents to try to make better ones. All this is most likely a calculated risk Sony and Microsoft took to get their machines on the market. If they break after 3 years, when most warranties have ended, it is a later problem and somewhat easier to fix. And most of all, not so much of their problem.
Insufficient cooling and weak solder...
The faulty cooling means the machine reaches excessive temperatures almost everytime it is switched on. Repeatedly heating the material to excessive temperatures, and then cooling after switch off, stresses the material and causes the solder to crack eventually, thus loosing electrical connection. Even just one faulty solder of the many hundred solders are enough to make it go. Sometimes it causes a break in a non-essential part and makes the machine glitch and hang, and/or the screen to show blurred colors in raster patterns.
To prevent this, and keep your beloved machine alive, read this comprehensive guide to help prevent the YLOD. It's very good, complete with videos and handy tips.
TL;DR : just check this link mentioned just above.
And could the OP perhaps edit his OP and refer to this and the CCP dudes post? Thus peeps don't have to look near and far for the juicy parts.
Edit: can any of the fatboy owners out there give a word on if your problems were solved after changing harddrive? Preferably to a 7200rpm, but I don't think it really matters. Larger drives are faster. Perhaps it really just is that. Thank you. |

I have a launch day PS3 phat, I changed the HD 3 years ago and its still going strong with mone of the issues listed, I get the odd hang now and then but no more than I would expect probably once per month. So imho updating the HD is a good idea as well as giving the inside a clean from dust (no pun intended) accumulation, not sure about firing compressed air into it though. |

Playstation Home has similar issues, due to the constant and heavy streaming of data from the internal drive. It's not that the game is doing some specific thing to kill your PS3s, but that it is pushing it to the limits of operation where existing flaws in your setup (like a heavily fragmented drive, or cooling issues that allow the temperature to reach unsafe levels) all speed up the appearance of flaws inherent to the older models.
Those old PS3s are fragile beasts. Keep them cool, keep them clean, and make sure the HDD is relatively clear of unnecessary crap. If you have Plus and you've run the same system for three or more years, I recommend backing up all your saves and then doing a full drive format. You'll notice the XMB running faster immediately. |

I'm considering an SSD instead of an HDD. They say it halves the loading times. The only games that don't see improvements on PS3 from SSD drives are games which read heavily from the 1x Blu-Ray drive. PS3 HDD vs SSD @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjQqpQe8g6Y
Also I advise against using 7200RPM HDD on fat PS3s as you can see through googling 7200 rpm on ps3 many users had there systems overheating with the addition of a faster RPM drive, I think its better to stick to a 5400rpm or go for SSD. SSD have no heat because they have no mechanical parts. |

My PS3 YLOD while playing the last build, I didnt have it on long either, was still on the first game. I fixed it and all was well until this build.
I can play any game including Uncharted 2/3, Battlefield 1943, Wipeout, etc and no problems. When I go on DUST 514, if I stay on the headquarters, all is well but about 5min into a battle the fan starts going on a preety hard level, not the max like on the fan test but still very loud. |
