Hi all, newbie player here with some questions.
Little background, I've been playing for about 2 days now. Only other shooter experience I've had was mostly Halo CE for the PC. I've been playing with the Assault and Scout suits and I've got more of a liking for Scouts and their speed over the assaults. Very new to Dust and Eve is completely alien to me, never played it. I played for the first day and a half or so, then went and bought the Mercenary Pack for the items and because I wanted to buy up some blueprint items to make some pretty cheap suits for experimenting in. Of course now I'm thinking I should have just saved my AUR, but meh, live and learn.
What I'm currently (mostly) running in:
Dragonfly Scout Suit
Militia Shield Extender Militia Armor Repairer Militia CPU Upgrade Remote Explosives Militia Shotgun Toxin SMG
And a quick listing of skills I have, if it helps any:
Demolitions lvl1 Dropsuit Command lvl3 Mobility lvl1 Vigor lvl1 Circuitry lvl1 Combat Engineering lvl2 Shield Boost Systems lvl4 Shield Control lvl2 Shield Enhancements lvl2 Light Weapon Capacity lvl1 Light Weapon Rapid Reload lvl1 Light Weapon Sharpshooter lvl1 Light Weapon Upgrade lvl1 Laser Rifle Operation lvl1 Scrambler Pistol Operation lvl1 Shotgun Operation lvl3 Sniper Rifle Operation lvl1 Weaponry lvl4 Armor Repair Systems lvl1 Field Mechanics lvl4
Turret Operation lvl 0 Vehicle Command lvl 0 Supmachine Gun Operation lvl 0 Powergrid Upgrades lvl 0 Undurance lvl 0 Gallente Scout Dropsuit Lvl 0
First and foremost I try to support my team however I can. In general I like to try and flank/attack from the back while the enemies attention is held from the front. Hack anything I can, keep our null cannons defended from opportunistic scouts, keep snipers to a minimum (hard to do for me against skilled snipers) and just cause as much mayhem as I can where the enemy isn't looking or isn't expecting me to be. I'll also attack things head on when I feel the situation warrants it, which sadly can happen a bit too much for my liking if things get hot and heavy around a clone regenerator or a null cannon, but you do what you need to do for the team.
Handling of Remote Explosives (RE), and things that go boom in general:
Now, when you set off one RE, you set them all off. So, how do more experienced members like to handle traps around null cannons? I can place traps on multiple cannons, or I can set up a lovely ring of death around just the one or two, because hey, let's face it, it can take alot of time to run from one cannon to the next trying to set up traps again after setting off all of your REs. I've also seen some players be smart and send in one sacrificial lamb to see if the cannon has been trapped while 2-3 others either stand guard on the other side or stand off a bit.
Second question on things that go boom, I have yet to try them, but do Prox mines work on foot soldiers? As I recall their description says that they are geared for use as anti vehicle mines. I can see uses for both, but right now I've only got one equipment slot so I'm not sure which I should be running with. If my team has control of a supply depot then I can use both.
Also, sometimes the enemy team either is smart, or has squad members playing together. If/when they bust out their HAVs, they support them quite well so it can be hard to get a missile launcher in there against it. I can set up traps for the HAVs, but about how many REs/mines do I need to use to take it out? I haven't been able to test it really because I set off my trap just a bit too early, or I've been dead and unable to set off the trap when the tank goes rumbling past.
At some point I want to try out vehicles. While I can see uses for a LAV for getting to objectives quicker and hacking things, I think I'm more inclined to go for a HAV geared more for anti infantry. However I'd like to get people's opinions on what a good starter vehicle is. Besides hacked enemy vehicles of course!
There are a variety of weapons that I do like, however I am rather fond of the Shotgun/SMG combo. It seems like I tend to do a lot of CQC, so the shotgun is really nice for that. The Toxin SMG seems to be more accurate/ tighter shot grouping at a longer distance than the shotgun, so that tends to be my weapon of choice if I have to fight at a longer distance or run into a pesky scout that almost looks like it's lag hopping all over the place. Open to any suggestions on what to try. The higher tier Assault rifles look interesting. I'm not always this good, but I do like the ability to drop a heavy in two headshots with a shotgun though.
I'm planning on getting Field Mechanics and Weaponry to lvl 5, but not quite sure where to go after that. I'm thinking of maybe going with Dropsuit Command to reduce my signature. I get alot of deaths from pesky snipers, and I'm hoping that dropping my sig will reduce the odds of them spotting me as easily. I try to use as much cover as I can, but when they're up high sometimes it doesn't help. I'm mostly interested in boosting passive skills right now while I learn the game, but like I said, looking for suggestions.

Honestly, I would type out a bunch of advice on your build but the entire skill system is being reworked at the end of the week and everything will be different, so it wouldn't do much good.
Many remote explosives users will equip two types of remote explosive, because the detonator works on all explosives of the same type, so for example if you have ADV and STD REs, the ADV detonator will only detonate your ADV REs, allowing you to place ADV REs on objectives A and B and STD REs on objectives C and D and only need to replace two explosives when you detonate.
Prox mines only work on vehicles and they beep when you approach. LAVs are often speeding too much to be able to do anything about this but a good HAV will either avoid your proxies or drive over them because they are confident they can take them. They usually can.
Try out the militia tanks and see how you like them.
Again, I can't speak to what skills will do in the next build (Monday) but you will be at a disadvantage unless you maximise everything which gives you a passive bonus to HP/damage. |

Hello, and welcome to the game! I love new people, for the most part, and you definitely seem like you have at least half of your brain, if not all. You know more then me after 2 Days... :P
Anyways, I just have a couple tips, some economical, and some combative. So here goes:
COMBAT: Your weapon affects playstyle, you should know this. But what I mean is you have to adapt. A small chance makes a huge difference. What I mostly see people doing wrong, that they get killed for: Is aiming. Some weapons almost REQUIRE you to (In Uncharted 3 terms...) Run n' Gun. This is basically keeping your finger OFF of the aim button. Why? Some weapons have terrible aim, that won't do you a ton of good. Shotguns for example, I spent an entire day of matches aiming. The next day, I stopped pressing L1, and got more than double kills. Mass Drivers are also another great example.
If you're into Scout Suits, I highly recommend taking this next part up as a habit. Every time you're in a firefight, get to a spot safe from attackers, and press START. You'll be taken to your Map of the battlefield. Look for a low traffic area, and go there, assuming you aren't going to have to pass through enemy lines. This can mean a win or a loss. If Objective A is getting slaughtered, chances are, Objective D is about to get hacked.
I see that you're into REs as well. I have a couple useful tips for this, as I'm a Demolitions Logi that loves to explode people. Stick with the Standard REs, they're good enough to survive with, don't cost a lot in SP, ISK, or CPU/PG, and are all-around good. Another great advantage you have, is that a surprising amount of people DONT use REs, and don't normally worry about them. Anyways, try to lay one down at every objective you can. The Standard RE can have up to 5 down at once. This makes you the most defendable person in the match, as squadmates will want to keep the REs intact.
Squads too, btw. A great thing. You don't normally find a whole lot of reliable squads, mostly some Newberries trying to get an Orbital Strike, but if you do happen to find a good one, its almost as if the game is giving you the win. Take it, say thank you, and be on your way. Also, under OPTIONS, turn Voice Chat on. Squadmates with mics are usually good at being leaders, and can give out orders for you to follow. Ok, that's all, time for economics (Next post...) |

It's a good idea to have an all Militia BPO fit or two in case you need ISK badly, you did the right thing.
What I'm currently (mostly) running in:
-snip-
And a quick listing of skills I have, if it helps any:
-snip-
Looks quite good, but I'm wondering the decision behind Laser Rifle Operation lvl 1, you don't seem to be using them at all.
That works, and most of the time the really good snipers hang way behind the redline, and their officer rifles are usually an instant death to low level scout suits. When you know where a sniper is and you need to run around in the open, try to move as unpredictably as possible. Not just squiggling left and right, but stopping, accelerating, jumping and changing your speed really messes up with a sniper's aim and increases your chances of making out of it alive. And sneaking behind enemies is good too, just try to be accurate and make your shots hit on target, missing usually means your death with shotguns.
Some people like to equip two sets of remotes to have a bit more control over what they detonate, but I just stick with one and run over to the objective as soon as possible to plant it with remotes again. And moat of the 'sacrificial lambs' are just accidental, one dude got to the objective first and was unlucky enough to be blown up by remotes, and then the other unsuspecting enemies just continue hacking. Most of the times people just throw a flux grenade on objectives to clear them from remotes
Depends on the tank, but most of the time Proximity Remotes or Remotes in general are useless against tanks, because most of the time tank drivers can detect the mines and will either shoot them or just avoid them. And running behind tanks to plant remotes is really risky too, because most of the time they have a secondary gunner scanning around for people, and if they spot you you are pretty much dead. I've never really attempted taking on tanks with remotes, I just stick to forge guns and swarm launchers.
You can run around with a shotgun only too, it simply limits your engagement range a bit, which means you have to play smart and what enemy to attack and what not. But yeah, SMGs are a good sidearm on finishing off opponents who are trying to run away from your shotgun's range. As for assault rifles, I don't think they are that good on scouts, too little HP to take on people in assault suits at the same range.
And finally, I would hold back on thinking too much about the skills, Uprising is coming soon and with it a major skill overhaul will come. Wait until the patch on May 6th comes, then you can really delve yourself into the skills. And welcome to New Eden!

Well Artificer Ghost beat me here....
I would really like to give some sound advice, but as stated before, this game is getting a complete rework and all of us except CPM0 and FanFesters will be on completely alien terrain...
But this advice would still apply:
Step #1: Test the waters with Militia
You've already done this in identifying your basic niche role (CQC) and following up by identifying the bare equipment required (Shotgun Scout).
Step #2: Plan Your SP
I can not emphasize the importance of planning. I always tell people to get your core skills out of the way first. However a new build is coming so I can not identify what those will be, or if they'll even exist in Uprising. After core skills, you want to follow through with getting your equipment of varying tiers unlocked. After you've reached a tier of equipment you feel is suitable, you would follow up with supplementary skills. In this build it would be Sharpshooter, Weapon Upgrade, etc. However again, new build.
Step #3: Social Aspects
After you've established a plan and a foot, you should look to enroll in a corp or frequent squads as a freelance hobo and make some allies. They are very important and provide a force multiplier: Teamwork. Not only that but your power can be determined by the friends you have. Sure ISK is something, but trust and allies are priceless in New Eden. However this brings me to the point: Spies, Lies, and Bloody Backs. Making allies with one can make you enemies with another. People will spy on you, sabotage you, and worst of all try to gain your trust. Your ally is nothing more than a timebomb, so you should play your cards reservedly or mislead as well, so as to not be exposed. However trust only becomes a great issue when you are a person of notice, a portrait to some, a bounty to others.
Step #4: Strategy
You should, after establishing contacts and various assets, plan a longer term goal and set out on the path to complete it. It can be anything from Top Dog, to a CEO, to a notorious fiend. Play it like you want it.

Hai Bojo. :)
And see what? The signature? I didn't know I had to put that, but I'll start doing that when giving tips. :)
And yay new stuff in 5 days! I'm so excited. I just can't hide it. Super excited about the new graphics. I didn't rally have a problem with them until I was reading a 'DUST Vs. Defiance' article, and someone pointed them out. And then, looking back, I realized they weren't as great as some games... So yup. Colored suits too, Oooooh yea. :D
Anyways, Vyuru. Bojo is absolutely right, that is some stuff I missed (AKA: Didn't know... First lesson!). |

You have a very good handle on things for someone who has only been here 2 days.
I read your post, wrote down my advice, then read the rest of the thread and found that everything I had to say, someone had already said. So I will just tip my hat to you and wish you luck.
And a tip of the hat to Bojo and his fine student as well. Good posts.

First off thank you all for all the excellent advice!
Y'know, I might just try out a suit using prox mines... I've noticed some common paths that LAV drivers take on some of the maps. I might get lucky and see some fireworks if I toss a line of prox mines across one of those paths.
Invaluable info on the RE and Advanced RE!
I'll take up the habit of scanning the actual map. Normally what I do is just do a quick 360 so I can see where the clusters of red/blue are and go off of that, and check the battlefield map when I'm dead wondering where to spawn.
As for Laser Rifle Operation at lvl 1, I wanted to try them out, and you had to skillup in them before being able to use one (I think...) I'm sure I probably didn't use them to great advantage, but it just didn't seem to fit me. Plus when I used it, it was liking having a big neon sign saying "Shoot me!" Snipers would zero in on me, I'd be instantly bum rushed by all members of the opposing team who were close enough, and I even had someone call in an orbital strike one time. I'll get good enough to use 'em right someday I'm sure, but they just aren't quite me.
Right now I think I'll just work on getting all the SP I can before the big event ends tomorrow, that way I'll be ready for just about anything that Uprising will bring.
I've started going through the available skills, and for whatever reason missed the electronic skill upgrades, and all I can say is wow. Profile dampening, hack speed, CPU upgrades etc, all of those are looking mighty fine to me right now.
I've got a pretty good idea of what direction I want to head in with my shotgun scout.... Needs some more tweaking and fine tuning as I get more skills. I think my next build is going to be a speedy hacking scout. I've got a few ideas for that. I'm just not quite sure yet if I want to splurge on an advanced suit down the line that is strictly for opening hacking, or just go for a LAV and rush objectives. I can see pros and cons to both approaches.
Next up is figuring how to join a squad and looking at corps! |
