I imagine instead of trying to do something crazy complicated like giving every single planet its own day/night cycle based it a unique size and rate of rotation, you could simplify the process eve-side by simply making every planet rotate once every 24 hours like earth does.
As every planet would be at the same "starting" position as soon as the server goes up every morning, you then have a second "check" which looks at the hour of the day and the position of whatever district you are fighting in. Since every planet would have the same rate of rotation, it shouldn't be terribly difficult to create a system that is smart enough to know whether or not its the proper mood for the geography.
Then again, Eve code. Ugh. All of the planets in EVE do rotate... well almost all. All except temperate planets. When we introduced districts we had to stop the temperate planets from rotating. This is kind of why linking day/night to the planets actual rotation is maybe not the best of ideas right now, districts would be always day or always night. eh. We do want to fix it though. Perhaps when this actually gets 'fixed'/implemented, you could convince the EVE side to get the planets to orbit properly. |

you know what most people do... pump up brightness, tweak contrast so they can see just fine and negate the artificial colour shader on everything. |

For those wondering why the interview says we are doing it and I am saying we are not:
There was possibly a bit of miscommunication about exactly what was being done, and what we want to do in the future. We want to link day/night cycles to a planets actual rotation, but not yet.
As for just some kind of random day/night for matches, that is not something I would be working on so can not comment. |

"what we want to do in the future" is getting a bit of a copout that's getting used way too much; Don't talk about features in a game that might be implemented in the 6th expansion and present them like they're already planned but are in fact nothing more than a doodle on a post-it somewhere on your 'cool stuff to do'-board.
Looking back at 2012's Fanfest sessions is a cringefest in that regard.

Have to agree with Liner here, but go further and say that you guys really need to reconsider why you are allowing your marketing team to dig you such a whole.
They have consistently oversold the game, and continue to do so. Unless you want people to be constantly disappointed by the new stuff you guys make, then please stop letting your marketing department write checks that your coders can't cash. All your hard work then gets slagged off because the stuff that the devs were never even working on isn't in the build like the marketing guys promised.
And if they refuse to stop overselling the game, fire them. If they can't stop doing damage to your companies credibility, you need to find marketing people who will sell your actual product, not the daydreams from brainstorming sessions as completed features.
Also, please, for the love of Amarr God, do not let random day night cycles come into Planetary Conquest. I need to be able to plan so that i can set my reinforcement times so that I can't get attacked at night. Having a random cycle would destroy that option, and from an immersion POV is crappy because it is my Corps district, you don't think we would know when the sun is up or not? |

Except this wasn't the marketing team's doing, it was the Chief Technology Officer, the number one person at CCP who should know what the programming and developers are capable of. |

That is much worse. I thought this was just another of the marketing boys running his mouth. But if the CTO is in the dark, then this is an ominous sign. |
