Jason Starhawker wrote:This guide aims to obliterate any and all doubts as to the nature of this game which you valiantly (pat yourself on the back now, you'll need the comfort) downloaded, whether these doubts arose due to the fact it was for free or because you just really like science-fiction games. Perhaps because you mistakenly thought it was like other FPS games you enjoyed?
First and foremost, this is NOT a Call of Duty game, nor is it like Battlefield or Halo (despite inevitably sharing some gameplay elements). Let's be clear on this.
This is a Massively-Multiplayer Online First-Person Shooter, exclusive for the PlayStation 3 console. If you are already familiar with EVE Online and its complexity, then congratulations, you only need to grow accustomed to the actual mechanics of the equipment and your personal playstyle in regards to what YOU should invest in. The official site for DUST 514 is here
Let us assume that you are not familiar with the EVE universe, however, for all intents and purposes of this guide.
The term "Newberry" is used to describe a new player who has entered the harsh, brutal world of DUST 514. Under typical circumstances, newberries are notoriously uncooperative, unreliable, and generally lacking in common sense. It is worth noting that in comparison to other FPS games, currently, Newberries are infamous for being particularly mediocre players. This could be attributed to DUST 514's unstable state as Open Beta, and the influence which other prolific FPS series' have had on players' mindsets and skills in regards to effective play; for now, all we must do is focus on maturing, ripening into a better player, perhaps eventually known as a vetberry. Like the maturation process of fine wine, this WILL take time, but you must not despair, for the rewards are great! Good times will be plentiful, you shall forge friendships in the fires of battle, you will experience unforgettable, intense moments of gameplay, and best of all, it's for free. So without further ado, let us begin!
This is really bad. Just what I've read so far, I mean.
Quote:This is a Massively-Multiplayer Online First-Person Shooter Actually, no, it's not. A massively-multiplayer online FPS would have an open world (like GTA or Skyrim) and hundreds if not thousands of players fighting simultaneously across different regions.
This is an FPS game with maps that have defined regions and a player cap of 32. (16 on 16, right? Either way, it's not hundreds.)

It is worth noting that in comparison to other FPS games, currently, Newberries are infamous for being particularly mediocre players. Wow, way to welcome the new players. You're gonna start by insulting them right off the bat. This is my one biggest complaint about the vets of Dust 514. You guys have your heads up your arses so far when it comes to your perception of player skill. It's funny how quickly and conveniently you all forget that one's effectiveness in this game is incredibly reliant on the amount of skill points invested in skills and gear, and how quickly that makes ones own personal skill at FPS games irrelevant. Simply put, if your gear and passive bonuses are better than another players, your odds of winning are better regardless of skill. I know this all to well, considering I'm not new to FPS games. I'm actually very experienced at them, and the first thing I noticed was that my ability to get the jump on opponents made little to no difference before I got semi-decent gear and skills.
The rest of what you posted is just you spewing more elitist garbage. Dust 514 is very similar to MMO games in that the amount of time invested into skills improves your chances of winning. New players don't suck because they're new. They suck because they have worse skills and gear.
If you really want to welcome new players, then be completely honest with them from the start:
Hey new players. Your ability to do well in this game is directly related to your ability to put skill points in the right places from the start. Take the time to read and watch video tutorials about making different types of builds. If you choose to experiment yourself, you'll only waste your own time and effort.
That's the very first lesson I learned in Dust. Should I keep reading your Wiki? Hmm. I'll glance at it some more. |

Read the rest. Not too bad. It was just the tone in the beginning that I didn't like. |

I, in fact, reworked the original introduction to what you just read. Jason is the one who has been doing the more objective information after it. At the time, I didn't see it like you did. I just thought some humour in what was sure to be a long-winded guide would ease it up a little. Obviously, this hasn't worked. I'll see if I can change it up a little.
Look forward to more feedback, thanks for actually taking time to read it. |

It's a wiki. I didn't write the whole thing. I didn't write the opening section, and I only wrote the middle of the next section (giving info about DUST accounts). The first 10% of that page is pretty much all other writers, and I thought it quirky and amusing and mostly left it alone. The other 85% is me. Thanks for checking it out. |

Blueberries need to squad up...so they won't be blueberries anymore. I wish there was some way to broadcast that message across the screen in the war room. It's horrible to see only two squads with three people in each and the rest are blueberries. Then they spawn and run full speed at the enemy. what in thee captain's log are you doing blueberry? |

Thanks. Vyzion edited the intro, perhaps you'll like it better, or have new comments. I continue to edit the rest of it, and I think it's even better than before. |

Oh cool! Don't i feel stupid now.
Great guide over all. You mention about activating voice in-game, which isn't on by default, but i think what most new players don't realize (i know i didn't) is that when you join a squad, you have to select squad and active voice for it too. Wish you would add that as well.
Keep up the great work

Although I expect Jason or someone else will add this, feel free to do so yourself! It's a wiki, and if you think you can improve the newbie guide, please feel welcome to. |

Thanks for the guide!
Also, I got the tongue in cheek Newberry ribbing. I thought it was funny. But like anything else, it is only funny in small doses. And not so much after I have gotten my tail kicked all over the server for a few hours because I'm head to head with vet players. But, I did chuckle the first time I read it.
Sincere thanks for putting the info together. |
