Hi there, I bought a ps3 to play Dust 514 and I am having real problems.
I have never played an FPS before, so this is really difficult to learn.
The problem I am having, is I have no clue about anything. Literally no clue.
So when I get thrown into a game with people way more skilled and that have more stats because of skill points than me, I just get destroyed over and over and over. I have a death count of about 50 and a kill rate of 1. Literally.
My problem is my aiming mostly because when I get into 1v1 fights, I can't even touch the opponent and by the time I even try to get a shot off, I am dead.
With the lack of training zones and target practice, I am lost and I feel really bad for my team too because all I do is let them down.
Please note this is not a QQ thread. I believe Dust 514 is awesome, but my main concern is for new players like me who have come from long term EvE Online and how it is really difficult to get into.
What is the best way to practice?
Please don't give me the play more answer, because that will not work unless I know what I am looking for in my mistakes.
Any constructive help would be amazing and thanks in advance if you read my post. |

This might help you!
So I've talked with some other EVE players, and apparently EVE is a lot about spreadsheets. The first thing you should not do in DUST514 are spreadsheets.
Don't take the easy way because it won't work. End your search for finding an easy way to get better without playing games, because there is none. You have to play games to get better.
So here's some advice that might help you.
First: make 10 or more alt PSNs and put a character on each one of them. Activate passive SP on each character. Use the alt account to practice and farm SP. Try not to screw up your main anymore than you have already. If you have a 0.02 KDR and have 50 frags, that means you have died around 2,500 times. That does not look good. KDR is an almost meaningless stat, but that does not mean that a corp will see that and ask how someone could possibly be that bad.
Second: don't use weapons that you don't need to aim, or are easy to aim while practicing. AKA no laser, no HMG, no mass driver, no sniper rifles and no shotguns. Your choices are Scrambler Pistol, Assault Rifle, and a Sub Machine Gun. I have mixed feelings about the SMG, but you can aim with it. I'd suggest you stick to scrambler pistols and assault rifles for now. Also, do not spam grenades for an easy frag. Have AV grenades on you at all times. This will prevent you from relying heavily on them. Later when you can shoot, you can practice throwing grenades, but do not do it for right now.
Third: Use the starter fits only. That's right, the free suits. Do not make changes to them. You can play as Assault - Frontline and Assault - Medic. I do not know what class you started off with, but you might be able to use that too. As of this build, Arbiter is the best starting class for almost every role. The only downside is that the Arbiter starting fit is not good at all. If you bought a merc pack, which is the best deal for purchasing AUR, you also get a free T1 scout BPO with it. You also get a BPO SMG, so you can put that on your Assault - Frontline and/or Assault - Medic suit(s) if you desire.
Fourth: Try not to burn yourself out. Tell yourself that you are going to suck for a few hours for as many days as possible. You probably are not going to play DUST514 like it's your job, but dedicate some of your playing time towards getting better.
Fifth: Stop reading forums and using spreadsheets! Get yourself in the game!
Also, do not buy any additional gaming hardware. You will probably want a headset, but other than that you should be GTG. Right now a controller is better for infantry and a keyboard and mouse is better for HAVs, but since you're staying on foot you should stick to using a controller. Get better using the best. There's no point to learn how to play DUST on a kb/m even if it is easier for you. You are struggling already, so what harm will learning how to use a controller do?
Skirmish has been bugged for awhile now, and I believe it is still bugged. The bug is that your frags and deaths are only counted if one side gets cloned. Stick to skirmish with your main. Assault (Team Deathmatch) can be fun too, but use one of your alts for that. Do not make alts on your main's account because they will not earn passive SP.
There are some noobie corps which might be able to help you to a certain extent. They will probably be ok with putting up with your current state of badness. I'm taking a wild guess here, but I have a feeling that those corps will be slightly nicer to you and help you look less-bad than you already are. If they will take you into a squad and run with you, that's great, but if you want to be good, you are going to have to deal with a little pain.
And I say use starter fits only because you can get frags in them, and you will be able to save 100% of your ISK for later. Some buy the T1 AUR suits from the market, but you still need to purchase mods and weapons to fit them. Older players were able to purchase BPO mods at low prices (ie between 15 and 30 isk each) but the prices have gone up a lot since them. The BPO suits might make more sense if you have the BPO mods, but atm you should just save your money.
Playing a single player campaign can also be helpful. DUST does not have a single-player campaign, so if you feel tired of getting your ass kicked in DUST, don't be afraid to take a break and play something else. If you bought your PS3 for DUST, I have a feeling that you're not going to quit, and the game is most certainly more enjoyable if you can kick someone's ass now and then.
I really enjoy the Unreal series, and even though many older fans hated Unreal Tournament 3 (they slowed it down a little, there are vehicles, and the game takes place not in an arena @_@), I still believe that it is one of the best console FPS games that has come out over the past few years. Since you haven't played FPS games, you won't have a bias against UT3, especially the console version of it. They slowed the console version way the **** down because they had to. PS3 =/= PC.
BTW, the bots in unreal are awesome. They will try to match your skill level, so you can have some fun playing. Playing with real people is always better, but the bots should give you a run for your money.
edit: when you're not practicing, feel free to do something lame like redline sniping or whatever. Just make sure you get some time to practice in. |

Any constructive help would be amazing and thanks in advance if you read my post. Best way to practice for you, imo would be to start as a logi (artificer), and stick with the biggest clump of blues you can find (preferably a heavy in the clum[), and keep repair tools and nanite injectors are your main equipment to worry about. This way, you can take things slowly- you don't have to worry about shooting so much just yet, but instead get used to the controls and learn how to use cover effectively.
When you feel comfortable about being able to support your teammates by repairing and reviving in the midst of combat, start worrying about your shooting more. When you do start shooting, I suggest either starting with an assault rifle or shotgun (because they're easy to use), or a mass driver (the logi weapon of choice- despite the blast radius, it's arguably the hardest weapon for most players to use; this is because it has a completely different feel to it. I always think that if you start with the most complex weapon, everything will seem easy after that.) To get back to the point- the best situation to start worrying about using your weapon is when you feel that your team has the advantage, and is about to stomp the enemy anyway. Use the momentum for your advantage.
That, or take the road less traveled and become an LAV driver/dropship pilot. |

I made a long post there about aiming. You'll also see how little I know about EVE or the corps in it LOL.
Some maps have a nice red line where you can practice. My favorites are Manus Peak (the map with 3 objectives and mountains) and the 4 point map. Manus Peak is nice because you can almost always have access to a supply depot in the back. The depot will let you change fits and restock ammo when you nanohives run out. Many players take some time to practice in the back with weapons, settings, grenades, and equipment. Everyone knows that there is no rifle range you can practice on, so it's not like you'll be doing anything weird back there.
If I start a new game, I sometimes like to watch videos or follow the better players around and watch what they are doing. It's personal preference, but I always go straight for the tournament battles (or something similar). I figure that people are going to be going all out to win. I got a vid by my corp mate znig that I will shamelessly link right here.

That's the advice pretty much everyone gives. If I want to improve my gun-game, I take a gun and go shoot something. Maybe he can do that for WP, which translates into more SP and ISK. I still say he should practice shooting people.
Scheneighnay McBob wrote:That, or take the road less traveled and become an LAV driver/dropship pilot. Same thing as before. I do not believe that will help him improve his gun game.
The problem with going logi/vehicles is that he might want to put points into it. If he does that, he'll lower how effective he is in 1v1 combat. Some skills cross over, but many do not.
Fortunately, PSN accounts are free and anyone can make as many as he or she desires. Each account can hold one character and generate passive SP on it. It lets you switch around and figure out if you like doing stuff or not. Sometimes I just want to relax, so I go red line sniping on chick chicky boom. Other times I might want to run around on my pistols only alt. The sweet thing about it is that I have a proto sniper, proto scout, proto pistols and proto logi right now in addition to 0 Try Harder who has 8mil SP only in tank. I have thought about getting the L2 logi suit, I might do that soon. But maybe not. There are still plenty more vehicle skills to be had xD.
Sadly, I rarely play my alts anymore. CCP changed the SP system and now you get 1,000 SP at the end of a match (1,500 w/booster) after you hit the cap. I just use alts to screw around with suits and weapons to see how they work, but other than that =[
CCP is changing the whole SP system soon, and from what we know everyone will get a refund of their SP and ISK spent on skill books. That gives you a little bit of wiggle room to play around. I got some godawful missile turrets on this guy, and skilled up in a few more things. |

Oh yah, I almost forgot. It's not like the training corps are bad or anything. It might be a good idea to join one. I am pretty sure they don't kick people out because they cannot play. Getting a squad helps.
And learn the maps. You have to learn the maps. It is sometimes a good idea to simply go exploring. Learn the maps in game. You might want to check this out too. Some pictures of maps are in there. |

Trying out a bunch of classes helps too. If you're having trouble killing heavies, just make an alt a heavy and try to play that. You'll see how people kill you, and can use that against enemy heavies in the future. |

Actually, if you are going to track anything, the number of bullets you can put into someone's head is important. Hit/Miss ratio too. Sadly, hit to miss ratio is not as important in this game as others because your AR has wtf 60 bullets in one clip, more for a krins, and you can run around with ammo resupplies 24/7 -.-
edit: I do wish more guys would come here and say, "I am bad at this game." It makes it so much easier for me to say, "Yes you are." xD Hopefully you can take a joke or two btw. If you make a mistake you'll have to hear about it for awhile. Once you get better it might even be, "hey yip, remember that match where you went 0/47, and were actually trying to get a frag and not go negative?" |

0 Try: Why do you recommend using a controller?
I mean, it is just up to every persons personal preference :)
This is exactly why this game will be so great, you can play it exactly how you want to. No need to be gimped by controller if you are not good with a controller. Also no-one is forcing you to specialize into a role you dont want to play, etc.
I would recommend using controller to move around and a mouse to aim (if you are used to playing some console but mostly PC games FPS or MMO). Considering that it is not possible to re-bind keys in the game right now, I would greatly recommend getting a programmable mouse with on-board memory. This allows you to bind keyboard keys to the buttons and keep the settings even when you connect it to the ps3.
My experience with console FPS is not that great and I wanted to share my thoughts (since im also a newb, kinda.) I hope this helps you out.
EDIT: Logitech G500 programmable gaming mouse doesn't cost a lot (35Gé¼). |

I find the key to success in DUST and almost all FPS is to not fight a fair fight. Never fight someone who knows where you are, at least not without an advantage. Guys who go like 30-2 as infantry arent doing so in a series of 1on1 fair fights. They are picking their battles, flanking the enemy and killing folks who they have an upper hand on.
The ability to aim and shoot doesnt have the same correlation to success as youd expect, its needed, and it helps as you get better, but situational awareness and ability to pick out targets and stay alive is far far more important.
Though getting better at the actual twitch aiming aspects will help you survive and prosper when the situation doesnt allow you to "plan" your way to success. |

ok, since duni isn't neutral anymore, I will copy and paste that long bit I left over there right here ^.^
I get worried when I see the EVE guys posting training "advice". I have seen the posts they make on forums and how most of them play, and it is not pretty. There might be some good players coming to DUST from EVE with little FPS experience, but they are almost impossible to find.
Here's some basic stuff you need to get your peeps to do:
imo the first thing you have to do is make them adjust the sensitivity on their mouse or controller. It's something many fps players do. This strategy can help you practice aiming too, but most FPS players just adjust sensitivity because they can already aim. Some may just do it on the fly in the game, but an easy way I've found is this:
> Set up a build with an assault rifle and nanohive (scout or assault, but preferably scout) > Get into a skirmish match with a big and safe redzone > Find a skinny pole (smaller than a clone's head) > Get 30+ meters away from the pole > Shoot the pole at head height (after every 15-20 rounds quickly release trigger and then hit it again to break kick) > While shooting, hold left or right on your controller or on your keyboard.
- at this point you should be moving sideways (strafing) while shooting the pole at head height (aiming). To keep your sights on the pole, you should have to move your controller's stick or mouse sideways too. Adjust sensitivity/(practice?) until all of your shots hit the pole at head height.
> The next thing you can do is pair up with someone, and have him strafe. This time don't touch the right stick of your controller or move your mouse, and just aim by strafing alone.
I think no FPS players posted something like this because aiming just seems like a basic skill. Playing a FPS game without aiming? It makes no sense, but for some reason it's something that many players here have a problem doing. Almost every gamer likes a different sensitivity setting, so you need to find out what works for you. If you can't even hit a stationary target .
@ longer ranges you might want to change how long you make your bursts. The AR skill changes this too, but personally I wouldn't go too far into that while starting.
Of course practice makes perfect too. Best to do small maps (like the current Taipei ambush map) and play aggressively. You're not going to get better if you spend all your time hiding and running away. Hip fire works @ close range, but personally I try to use it as little as possible. Headshots ftw.
While using an assault rifle with all militia gear, if you're able to strafe, aim, and use cover, you should be able to kill 90% of the people on here (right now) with no points in weaponry or anything else related to infantry skills. Yes, it's that easy. |

To be fair, this game has some mechanical issues which make aiming a bit annoying. For example, ever be sniping, and be like a centimeter off of the enemies head, so you nudge up a bit, but then nothing happens, so you nudge a bit more, and then you aim above their head? The dead zone for aim is too much, and it makes it hard to make precise aim adjustments compared to other games.
Tricks that other FPS games allow (quick scoping, swipe scoping etc.) dont work in this because the sticky aim isnt as prevelant. I think the reason some console FPS players avoid saying "learn to aim better" as advice is because compared to typical FPS games, the aiming in this sort of sucks. HALO, BF3, COD (even niche competitive games like Hybrid) all have much smoother, tighter aiming mechanics.
I found, going into DUST, cocky from my skills a those games, it took a while to learn how to actually play DUST. Aiming is fine and dandy, but even if you can aim perfectly, you will get absolutely destroyed if you arent playing smart and dont have good situational awareness. Meanwhile if you struggle to aim, but play smart, have good awareness, never get caught in the open, and always fight with an advantage, you will do well. |

Try harder, your arrogance knows no bounds. Because you're so "efficient" at aiming, doesn't mean that everybody should be able to adjust like how you did. Everyone learns at their own pace and have their own hiccups. |

Stevez WingYip wrote:Hi there, I bought a ps3 to play Dust 514 and I am having real problems.
Any constructive help would be amazing and thanks in advance if you read my post.
try out dust university as a starter corp, they should be able to help you. My number one recommendation though is you should go buy another shooter game like COD or whatever and get good at aiming there. This game is a bit different in that there is strafing but those games are were I got my shooter roots from, so that's what I would recommend too. |
