Link above to the Massively interview about Uprising. The central theme according to CCP (& the topic of the first twitch tv interactive discussion this week) is the link between Eve and Dust. Specifically, how do they make things matter to us, the players, in both ends of this big sandbox.
So, I ask you, my fellow betaVets, what will Make It Matter to you when the Uprising starts?
I started playing Eve mid-2007. There have been many times when events and circumstances in New Eden have mattered to me in ways that easily mimic crucial real life moments. No other game ( and there have been myriad) has come close. No other company could get me to fly around the world to Iceland (best trip Evah). If it can be done, CCP can do it!
Think big. What kind of thing, in terms of gameplay and player interaction can you imagine that would Make DUST Matter? |

I started my second climb up the 'learning cliff' with EVE by enrolling in EveUni. Good times. Noodle salad.
I remember learning as much about Internet spaceships being serious business there along with the great gibbering hoard of frigateers that comprised our Unista-roams.
Months into my education word of Faction Warfare came to light and I set my sights on what sounded like much bigger pasture. It was. When FW launched we all got into the mix. The whole Squid vs Frog culture sprang up...I fought and won and lost and on & on amongst many corporations.
32nd BlackRise Defensive Unit was one of the last. We had great times and, given the time and abilities of an FW corp, did 'big' things. It's all relative. But that's the point. I didn't have to be written up in the NYTimes or become infamous on a dozen websites across the intawebs for it to matter. What we did in early FW mattered to me. Woke me up in the middle of the night to try and flip a few more plexes in the hope of capturing more space from the Gallente.
If DUST can inspire in me the feeling that the battles we fight make a difference beyond isk balances and K:D ratios, if taking and holding THAT key district can have a real effect on the bigger conflict...that would matter to me.
That's my bar, CCP. Make a system that inspires big sustainable conflict and ties deeply into FW.
Or make a game that blows my mind the way discovering that first wormhole and jumping through into...who knows what...
That stuff was so great. I am very much looking forward to the end of beta. It has been a fun, long, tedious, worthwhile experience.
I am excited to see what they've got in store. |

I knew we were on the right track for Dust the first time I saw the word "Ragequit" in reference to Dust.
Right now Eve Online rewards planning, organization, and audacity. This is a game where one of the first dreadnoughts was stolen in open space by an oportunistic third party during an in-space transfer between builder and buyer. I bet that guy ragequit! But those are the things that make Eve unique, and that's what we need in Dust. Victory to the team that stacked the deck in their favor, that planned better, executed better, prepared better, and not just to the team that played better. Victory to the team that arranged to have a stripper go to the house of the enemy commander just as the match started. And to the Victor go the spoils. Real spoils, not just Isk, but resources and territories that are better than others, that make that place worth fighting for instead of the place next to it.
To "Make it matter" in Dust, situations that lead to fights, not just the fights themselves, need to be worthy of a story. I look forward to the day when I can read about, or participate in, stories like:
Quote:We had lost the battle for the system, but we were holding on planetside. We had stockpiled a huge number of clones and equipment and so far it was enough. The problem was, all of our really expensive blueprints were stored dirtside, and we really couldn't afford to lose them. So as the enemy mercs closed in, we launched an attack on the anti-ship battery to the west, while simultaneously defending yet another attack on the storage depot. We gained control of the battery and cleared space at the top of the elevator. An allied blockade runner picked up the BPs and made it back behind friendly lines. After that, well, we transfered as much equipment and as many clones off-planet as we could and they overran us. But with the BPs intact, we'll be in a position to counter-attack within weeks.
The heart of Eve is risk of loss. The player that risks and wins feels trimuphant. He wants to shout it from the rooftops that his little band of brothers held off the mighty horde. The player that risks and loses feels equally strongly. And it's important that sometimes, there's nothing you can do about it. Sometimes, the other guy is just in the right place at the right moment with the right kit to kill you, and nothing you can do will change that. But other times, you get to be that guy, and that feels awesome. |

As a FW pilot in EvE, I want to see DUST actually have a significant effect. Taking all the districts in my corp's home system and having that make it significantly more difficult to take the system would be nice. What with all the planetary conquest modes and suchlike coming though, I'm confident that it'll happen. |
