I've been wondering which skills to pick recently as I've heard the NERF hammer being thrown around a little too close to my beloved AR. If I skill into light weapon sharpshooter (in the hope we get a good DMR someday) will it be worth it for the AR to just get smacked by the hammer?
I think to be safe I should max out all the core skills like shield control etc but I'd rather out-range and out-damage my opponents than even get into direct firefights with them. I also hope to be a big player in PvE when that hits so I want something to benefit that too.
Any tips on what I should train to GÇ£future proofGÇ¥ myself? |

Like you were saying, you can't go wrong with core skills. That's where basically all of my SP has gone.
As far as an upper-medium range weapon, consider the laser rifle. Hits from noticeably further than the AR.
As far as "future-proofing" bear in mind that depending on how "future" you're willing to look, no SP is ever really wasted.
For me personally, however, I'm focusing on my core skills until I get a better idea of what will be available. |

In what sense does having solid core skills make you "behind"? |

Thanks for all the replies guys! The thing about core skills is that they're really expensive for what I feel is such a small gain. I've not neglected them entirely of course, I have field mechanics 4, shield control 2, shield enhancements 4 as well as the other shield skill (the regen one) at level 4. Circuitry is level 3 as well as the powergrid one at level 3.
Most of my SP is in the Caldari suit at 3 and weaponry is at level 5 as well as AR operation at 5 with proficiency 1.
Should I just round off my core skills and wait to see what happens? The only problem with doing that is I'll always be worrying about the nerf hammer. |

Rinon,I didnt see you mention sharpshooter. I believe that is a core skill and worth even maxxing out. But I'm working on my Sever suit getting the most out of it before I move on. Hopefully more suits will be introduced before I do. |

Maybe try something besides vanilla everything. Seems like 80% of the playerbase is an assault with an AR. |

Eve is a pendulum; I don't expect Dust to change that. Specialist builds are most susceptible to this.
As stated fitting skills, passive skills, etc. will be useful build after build. If you know you will be using light weapons often, then the light parasites will serve you well. Having armor and shields will not hurt so field mechanics and shield control are always useful. Same for any skills that apply to all drop suits (stamina, profile, etc.). It's not future proof, but like in level III-IV in a weapon makes you serviceable, especially when backed up by strong passives. |

Yeah sorry, I forgot to mention it. I have sharpshooter at level 3 but level 5 seems so far away when some of my other skills are cheaper. I was hoping PvE would be around by now to really test my mettle.
As for the other poster saying to try something more than vanilla, I actually started as a heavy as I fell in love with the concept art for the HMG when it was first released, after playing as a heavy and skilling a little into HMG's I decided it wasn't for me in the PvP world, I needed something more long range.
The other role I play in FPS games is the role of designated marksman, so I skilled into sharpshooter and bought myself some Tactical Assault rifles and used them for a while, then they were nerfed or I just got repeatedly beasted by rapid fire AR's so I switched and never looked back.
The point of this tl;dr post is to point out that even though GÇ£80%GÇ¥ of players use the AR, there reasons for getting there can be insanely different. |

I use the AR because I'm Logi and have no sidearm. The AR just seems the only good all around weapon to pick. Since I only have one weapon to skill I went against conventional thought have maxxed sharpshooter all the way,it's nice . I'm also hitting AR proficiency level 5 later today. Yeah I know there are more efficient ways to spend 777,300 points for 3% damage but hey,its completed and I'm hoping a lot of people feel those last levels arent worth it. |

Wow, proficiency 5! Congrats dude! I think what I'm gonna do is save some SP for when the new build hits and see what happens. Anyone else doing the same? |
