1_ Metric is a much better system: The metric system is based on powers of 10 so it is much easier to convert units, often just by moving the decimal point. Once you remember the meaning of the prefixes, you can easily convert mass, volume and distance measurements. No further conversion factors need to be memorized except the specific power of 10. But for the English System you have to remember 5280 ft = 1 mile, 4 quarts = 1 gallon, 3 feet = 1 yard, 16 oz. = 1 lb, etc.
2_ Like the overwhelming majority of the world, the country the devs are from use metric. |

Damned foreigners, and their stupid metric system with the dumb decimal places and the megas and gigas and what not.

Yah, but who really cares about any of those other countries anyway? As far as I am concerned there's only two countries in the world the US and every where else. So, by my logic, half of the countries of the world use the imperial system. So :P |

What the hell is up with all these Europeans thinking I'm some stupid American trying to claim our system is superior. Of course the metric system is better, only a moron would prefer the imperial system.
Now that we have that out of the way, look at the KITTEN game! What the game tells you is 30m is clearly not 30m, it's far closer to 30 feet. So since you're all oh so proud of the metric system, how about you ask CCP why they've decided to r*pe it? |

Lorewise, CCP did say that clones were like superhuman and very tall. I don't know how tall though.
But OP is stupid if his complaint is that 30 meters looks like 30 feet. If so, he should be saying "Hey CCP, why does it say 30 meters when it looks like 10 meters?"

If you will pardon the pun, it is well documented that the documentation in DUST is nowhere close to accurate. I have been reading the same descriptions since last Summer and the information has never changed even if the weapon gets the Wang Nerf Hammer of Doom.
DUST and documentation are words that should be never be used near the word accurate except, as in this case, while explaining how they are not connected in actual fact.
Some points in fact; The Rail Guns shoot a projectile that is Visibly traversing a distance that takes under .2 seconds; The spool up time for a Rail Gun is supposedly .3 seconds but the button press can take over .5 seconds to actually register followed by a Spool Up that is another .5 seconds. |

Also, protip, a yard is 36 inches. A meter is 39.3701 inches. Soo, if something is 40 meters away you can assume it's just over 40 yards away (43.7445, to be exact). Now, we can take 40*3 and know it's a little over 120 feet (it's actually 131.234, so we're about 10% off). Unless your brain can't handle that one. |

So I learned a few interesting things from this thread.
1. Everyone but the guy who started the thread failed to actually read and comprehend the first post, and took it the wrong way. 2. It took over a page and a half for anyone to notice he spelt "metres" wrong. 3. America finally has a civilised leader, making this the ideal time for a new dictator to take over the world.
No, of course I'm not planning to take over the world. Why would you ever think that? |

So ledgend goes two scientist got a stick of iron, made two marks and between the two marks made 10 perfect marks and made those into perfect 10 sections of each as well. Thus a meter was born! Just did the math. A 1m long bar of iron, weighing 1kg, would have to be about 1cm in radius. That gives a volume of about 0.0064 m3 of iron. To hold 1 liter (0.001 m3), the radius of the bowl would need to be 0.078 m in radius. That gives a surface area of 0.0383 m2.
This means the bowl would have had to be 16cm thick. Nice bowl. |

Actually, a metre was originally 1 ten-millionth of the distance between the equator and the north pole. It has been further refined over time as measuring equipment became more accurate. Nowadays it is defined as the length of the path travelled by light in vacuum during a time interval of 1/299,792,458 of a second.
A gram was originally defined as the mass of water 1cm cubed at a temperature of 4 degrees C, making a kilogram the same mass as a litre of water. From this a prototype kilogram was manufactured. |

Well that is one thing about the 'english' system is that is mostly man guessable... where as metric nearly demands very specific measurements.
I do acknowledge the superiority of a measurement made in the powers of 10 though an a standard that the entire world can agree to.
Just some places are very deeply rooted in tradition of thousands of years, you're not going to suddenly get rid of odd measurements like yalms and the sorts. |

I'm not sure about that, rather from a historical perspective, American traditional measurements (not the same as Imperial, BTW) were among the first modern attempts to standardize a scientific system of measurements. While the U.S. was still stuck with the baggage of England's furlongs and fortnights (and extra "u"s everywhere), men like Jefferson and Franklin were trying to reform these systems and modernize them. This standardization was occuring concurrently with the early adoption of metric in Revolutionary France.
For instance, an Imperial pint is roughly 1.25 pounds of water, while an American pint was originally defined as the volume of one pound of rainwater (thought pure at the time) at room temperature.
This allowed for the pint and the pound to both be equal to 16 ounces of "pure" water in the same way that a cubic centimeter is a milliliter is a gram of water.
The major difference between American (US) measurements and Metric (SI) is that SI is based on powers of 10 while US is based on powers of 2.
Hmm... I wonder which system is more efficient for coding embedded binary... |

Sloth9230, you should probably edit your OP to make it clearer as I was also confused until I read more.
-So what you are saying that the game uses metric to scale everything and that you feel the scale is off (closer to feet). For example a 6 meter blast radius doesn't look right) -Someone else responded that our characters are larger than normal (game lore).
This seems like a valid discussion. How tall (in meters) are our characters supposed to be? And using that as a reference do other things in game scale correctly.
I think it would be wise to eliminate feet from the argument as if the measurement isn't metric it could be anything (3/4 of a meter for example).
Honestly I never thought of character size before. If we are all supposed to be over three meters tall that would be kind of interesting to know/ |

Sloth9230 wrote:When everything is obviously scaled by feet? Seriously though
If I understand the OP correctly, the question is why the measurements given in the Attributes do not appear to be accurate in game play.
Given that dropclones are 7 to 8 feet (~2.3m average), that would suggest that the blast radius of most Locus Grenades should be more than twice the height of the guy who is standing next to it.
That is testable, although it would be easier in a corp battle.
It is also possible that the damage is based on a curve. In that case, then the damage may be reduced to virtually nil at the outermost extreme range.
For instance, a 6m grenade that inflicts 400 HP at ground zero might inflict 350 at 2m, 250 at 3m, 100 at 4m, 30 at 5m, and 10 at 6m.
If this is the case, it's frustrating but really cool at the same time. Then again, I wish Dust had grenades with a full damage radius of 5m and a casualty radius of 15, like we have today. |

America is already officially on the metric system. Legacy english units are also allowed, but any dealings with the Government have a requirement to be in metric units at least. Also, most consumer packaging already reflects metric units as well. |

Thank you for not being an idiot But about #2, "metres" is just one of those words we Americans spell differently, I changed it in the title anyway. Don't worry, point 2 was a joke. But "meter" is also a separate word, so thanks for changing the suggestion to avoid confusion when they introduce parking meters and start charging us for leaving our tanks unattended (actually, that could be an interesting alternative to making them explode...) |
