My idea is simple: a piece of equipment much like nanohives in that they have a sphere of influence; however, instead of giving ammo, or health, this would be a shield bubble. The bubble would have a certain amount of shield depending on the level of technology. While you or your teammates are inside the bubble and the bubble is active, you can't be hit. Attacks will start dropping the shield down. Obviously flux grenades would be rather effective against such a piece of equipment.
I really don't think an item like this would break the game, and it fits right in to the general feel of the EVE universe. This would definitely add new levels of strategy to the game.
I don't think it would be right to fall under the nano skill, but would need a new skill (probably under the engineering category) new levels would unlock higher level shield generator items.
Once the shield pops, the item is destroyed.
Thoughts, suggestions?

Does it allow friendlies to shoot through it?
And if so, isn't it overpowered?
And if not, does it not have massive griefing potential against one's own team? |

Yes friendlies can shoot through it.
No it's not overpowered because the enemy can use one as well, and the amount of health would be appropriate for the damage the weapons deal.
Interesting uses would be counter sniping for instance. Drop one down so the sniper can't 1 shot you while you are looking for him. |

I would say instead of a bubble more like the shield things the covenenat has in halo.
No one shoots thriugh it but you can make cover for when you get caught out in the open with your pants down. |

So if everyone can use one, it is fair. And the defense can be proportional to the current offensive damage. |

But it wouldn't be fair if you could shoot through them, bubble shields blocked all fire in halo for a reason |

Posted this in another suggestion that was nearly the same as this. I agree. Players and vehicles should be able to move through shields freely (whether enemy or friendly) but no ammunition of any sort should be able to make it through (until it has no HP left of course).
They shouldn't be used to be able to shoot people freely while not being hit yourself. They should be used in emergency situations for cover. IE you know somebody is sniping anybody who tries to hack C. So you quickly place the shield where the sniper can't snipe you and now you can hack it.

So I and three other shield-carriers throw down shields around an HMG wielder... and proceed to lol forever as we effectively triple his HP.... and the balance for that is that "the enemy could also throw down a shield".
Well, I'm sure that's comforting to their bullet-riddled corpses. |

Could very much be abused imo. Killing someone in this game already requires quite a good amount of bullet so why add some more protection ?
Dont mistake me, the idea does fit the universe and would be kinda cool to see in action. But it would need to be thought through with great attention:
- Snipers could add that protection to be even more unkillable while camping mountains. And with the distance, flux would be useless. - Heavies would pretty much be unkillable with one of those PLUS an armor repair nanohives - Dropping bubble and Firing through would become one of the most common play and could be quickly boring - How much HP the device would have ? Cost ? PG \CPU ? etc.
Etc.. and i think you could see many more worries by giving enough time.
So my first reaction is "meh... no" |

If it was exactly as described in the OP, then this would be a broken item. But I can think of ways to make it NOT overpowered. How? Lets list the important points.
1. It's shields. Weapons that are strong against Shields (like Lasers) have an advantage against this device. Lasers having a long range means this would make them even better as a counter-sniper weapon when the Sniper is relying on a deployable shield generator like this. Additionally, unlike the shields on your suit or vehicle, I don't think this should have regen.
2. Area-effect equipment. Much like the Nanohive, but I'd suggest having a wider radius than the Nanohive. Not huge, but slightly bigger. No more than 0.5m increase to radius.
3. Duration. This wasn't addressed, but should be a limiting factor. This could either be a fixed duration allowing for the shield to remain at full strength unless damaged, then just cut off when the power runs out, or a "decay rate" where the shield gradually weakens over time and shooting it accelerates the process.
4. Offense vs. Defense. I think that, while inside the shield, you should be able to fire out. But while outside the shield, you can't fire through it even if it's friendly. Just like how friendly shields get in the way of your weapons fire, but your own shields don't, even though they still protect you while you're firing. You could consider a shield to be a one-way barrier, and because it wouldbe a spherical protective bubble.
5. Visibility. The "Shield Bubble" produced should be (unlike any other equipment which all have serious visibility issues in the current build) highly visible at long ranges. Additionally, anyone inside the boundary should have their Scan Profile SEVERELY impacted. This, combined with the above point, means that you can either use the shield as cover WITHOUT being able to return fire, or you can have the ability to attack from a protected location, but you expose your location by doing so.
6. Variants. There could be a version at each tier with a longer duration (or lower decay rate), but with the cost being that it has a smaller radius. You could have a "Decoy" variant with the previous tier stats, except that it gets marked as a Dropsuit instead of (or in addition to) a Deployable on enemy HUD/map. A variant with higher PG/CPU requirements, shorter duration/faster decay, but an appropriate increase in HP. |

I would love to have these but you should not be able to shoot through that could cause a lot of balance issues. But a deployable defense would make the life of a logi so much easier and useful. You could run to a downed teammate deploy your shield and revive/heal. |

I think instead of a bubble it should be a shield wall which neither side can pass though or shoot through
friendly fire should be effective on the wall so possible to destroy your own wall and yes flux grenades will damage the wall massivley (maybe even disable them intirely dude to the anti equipment roles aswell)

I guess this could work. This way it would be simple a deployable (neutral) Defense. This would make the thing a bit more offensive. |

I agree a direction shield is alot better than a bubble and shooting through it seams a little OPed in my opinion. this would be another important use for Logi maybe they can give it a bonus to its EHP when its dropped by a logi or something. |

love it, and look at other shield threads,
I would use it to cover a sniped victim while they were rezzed and repped. - then make a mad break for cover. |

I would like the shields to be like a wall instead of a dome. Neither friendlies or enemies can shoot through it. They can still be deployed like the nanohives. |
