It's a matter of practice more than anything else. Get a sense for the fact that the dropship will thrust towards its own top, comparable but not identical to a helicopter. With thrusters cut, it'll glide in the direction you angle it.
The left stick will move your nose up/down and roll your ship left/right and the right stick will rotate the ship as if a pole were stuck through the ceiling and out the bottom and the ship was spinning in place.
I might need to do diagrams at some point.
Things to do to get used to the controls.
1: Thrust upwards in place and practice settling back down gently. 2: Thrust upwards in place and try to land in a different place by angling the ship without thrusting. 3: Thrust upwards in place, drop the nose of the ship and thrust again to go forwards. To land this, try turning around and thrusting back the way you came to slow yourself. Circling around to cancel your thrust is often a pretty good method for stopping. 4: To turn quickly, roll the ship onto its side, then pull back on the left stick before leveling the ship out. 5: Practice almost scraping the nose/tail on terrain/buildings and raise just the exact part of the ship that is about to collide to avoid damage (you will lose ships practicing this). 6: Always be prepared to go down in flames and abandon ship, hitting your dampeners. |

I taught myself to fly by crashing over and over until the sheer will to stop losing ISK kept me in the air.
Mithridates and Skihids' guide provide great advice, but remember: there are so many variables to take into account when you're actually over the battlefield as opposed to behind your redline.
Turrets. Swarms. Forge guns. Tanks. Buildings. Distractions. Explosions. The MCC. Aerial vs. ground unit safe zones. Flat ground. Uneven ground. Ground that looks flat but had a tiny bump that causes you to explode. Lampposts.
Once you learn how to fly, you have to remember that the next step simply won't be ferrying a full squad from point A to point B. Next is calling in that half a million ISK dropship and flying through a battlefield as the fight rages below you, and surviving.
And that is slightly more difficult than touching the back of your wrist with your fingertips. |

Also this. My steps are basically all you need in order not to total yourself on the ground in the first two seconds. After that, you're on your own, dodging missiles. I feel sorry for your wallet, it'll look like mine. |

Dropships are the quickest way to become permanently poor but it's worth it. Oh and also prepare yourself, for when you have figured out the basic's of flying and staying alive will come the hours of screaming at blueberries to get the **** out of your dropship. |

i have the opposite problem of getting them in my dropship. if they want to stay that's fine i can afford to loose a pub match. it's more frustrating trying to pick them up, blue heavies insist on running 1 kilometer instead of taking the ride.
dropship takes crashing to learn to fly which can cost you a million or 2 to the hang of flying, you should just use the 151k militia ships for this. once you nail it, typically 30 minutes of flight time logged, you'll be way stoked. landing is the hardest part. and breaking, but the thing flies like a ship in zero gee with retro thrusting, you can throw a 180 and you will be then going backwards until you retro thrust.
you use the thruster in bursts, and then you coast forward, u dont always have to be thrusting |

The thing i find most annoying is when you have to go 90* degrees to kill your speed so you don't crash, and a bit of advice when you've got the hang of turning throw afterburners into the mix, activate them, start the turn, and if you've done it right it'll kick in just as you're facing the way you want to go, it's the right way to do rapid course change.
oh and if you ever use afterburner(they're great fun and quite useful) never activate them if there's something overhead or try to do rapid turns like i just described if they're already on, things can end badly |

Its a big lumbering AC helicopter thats not aloud to touch ANYTHING. Spacial awareness is key. Also afterburners.
Also also if you want to kill anything atm learn low level flying with blasters |

That Feel
I called in a dropship last night. I got sniped. Respawned to find some guys hacking it. Killed them and a team mate had called in a tank....the second drop ship landed on top of my ship and blew it up. :(
I am going to stick to walking for a bit. |

Just to add to the chorus:
Find a skirmish with a big map (don't recall the one but it had a city in the middle and a road along one side) and practice in the cheapest DS you can build. That side of the map should be clear and practice turning on/off shields fly with the 3rd person view. the other one kills. Learn how to do accell/decells and do it while in a turn. Also if you could get a buddy on board to give you an idea how high you need to be for the guns, missles, rail guns to hit the intended target (dirt spot).
To survive a match learn how to look around and look for those missiles before they hit, when you see them yaw away drop the nose and get out of there as fast as you can (don't hit stuff--first rule).
Good door gunners are a must, they must also have a mic. Be prepared to have a worthless gunner who just wants to shoot stuff (derp). We can't eject Elmoes yet.
Cheers have fun. Don't yank the DS around the sky, for she is a sensitive bird (and prone to killing you).

Dropship Controls
Threw together a graphic (9000 hours in MS Paint) because new pilots will find this thread and I find a lot of them have trouble visualising what the effect of each movement will be.
Keep in mind that when your nose is facing the ground, the red circle is straight up and down, so relative to the ground, roll will cause you to spin in circles, if that makes sense. |

Oh something we forget to mention, the only time you should have no momentum is when you're landing or taking off, all other time's keep moving, it takes a moment to start moving if you stop and for those couple of seconds you're the easiest target on the map. |

That's actually quite useful for new pilots, i tend to "feel" how the dropship handles these days, if you get what i mean, but it doesn't matter what help we provide the only way for them to learn is to get out there and fly. And since bojo would rage at me over his keyboard if i missed this chance, if you ever need help with your dropship fittings or just need help learning to fly drop into the channel "condor squad" there are normally at least 3-4 pilots in there at any given time and they're more than willing to help. |
