That's it. I've waited too long for this. I have decided to drop the guns (all of them) and go back to using the Nova Knives. I'm still dedicated towards completing my goal of reaching Gallente Scout Dropsuit Level 5 (costing 1.2million SP to upgrade) since I'm already at over 740,000 SP as I have been grinding too far to make any detours now.
Anyways, the main reason I finally decided to drop the guns is pretty obvious to me.
Just recently I went into a series of ambush matches with my corp mates looking to have some fun. I spawn with my usual Scout/Uplink/SMG fit and after finally managing to place an uplink and hosing down a merc or two with Minmatar bullets I suddenly had this strange feeling deep inside of me. No, it wasn't lunch related. It was the sudden urge to drop the gun and pull out my Ninja Knifing fit that I had gaining dust for a long time.
I started the match already with just one or two kills with the SMG so I decided to continue the rest of the match with just the knife. Nothing but the knife. After successfully sprint-killing my first knife victim in the match I suddenly had this rush of adrenaline coursing right through my veins. It's like the ninja inside me finally woke up.
My next target was another scout wielding a shotgun who already spotted me (it's ambush, so no one can hide) so I decided to flank him left and right to throw off his shots. It seemed to work as I closed in on him rapidly forcing him to deplete his entire clip of ammunition so that I can swoop in for the kill while he is trapped having to reload his shotgun. Knife meets flesh and that shotgun scout bites the Dust.
Immediately after that I chased after an assault flanking him in every way possible to avoid his bullets while I force him into a corner up against the Southwestern base of the tower in the Line Harvest map. It wasn't long until I trapped him further against an even smaller corner where I not only have him right where I need him to be but I also caused him to run out of ammo as well. I wondered what his reaction was when I killed him.
Once again I found myself in the line of fire from another scout who spotted me and chased after him the same way like I did with the others only this time I forced him over the hill where the B objective was located. I ran around the small hill being mindful of his location on the TACNET (thank you scout scan resolution) timing my moment of attack with his moment to turn the corner. SLASH! SLASH! And down goes the merc.
CURSES!!!!
Every time I kill so many mercs at once there is always that one merc that comes around the corner to finish me off. But at least he came just in time to see the carnage I left behind.
I respawn at my uplink which is thankfully still then and still unnoticed. I immediately noticed a female assault sprinting towards the red zone with a sniper rifle so I chased after her hoping to land another kill which I managed to do.
But then the real action began as I joined up with the rest of my team at the center of the map where everyone was duking it out near the tabletop structure. Guns were blazing, HMGs were roaring and there I was wondering WHAT THE **** WAS I THINKING!?!?! I was hustling so much around the corners that I kept having to mash the L3 button to preserve my stamina and no matter how hard I tried there was always that one enemy merc around the corner. I don't know how I pulled it off by I only died 5 times that entire match while coming out with at least 7 kills. Incredible how much hugging the containers for cover pays off to save my butt.
In the end, I felt so empowered that I was finally reminded as to why I started this journey in the first place. Sorry SMG. Sorry 'Exile' Assault. Sorry Swarm Launcher. We had great times together and I enjoyed bringing hell those tank drivers and making chard steak out of those LAVs, but the time has come that I have to retire you all and move on with the Nova Knives. They call for me and I must answer the call.

Maken do you do this on alts? Many Nova knifers have tried to get me as I am toying with new berries and was curious if you've seen me and tried to take me down? There's one in particular that hugged walls and corners and made me waste almost a full HMG clip trying to get to him. |

Maken, there's a map that has the roofs you can access with the 3 central objectives. I've managed to completely sneak into that complex and hack the objectives while my team was getting redlined. But it was primo Nova Knife territory. Ninja. Hope you can manage sweet episodes. |

You can.
1: Perform a melee strike. 2: Immediately start charging knife. 3: Now you can sprint without losing this charge.

Yes, it was, why? That may have been either me or my knifing partner causing you hell during that particular match. He got away from me only losing his shields. I never saw him again that match but noticed people dying to knives lol
Btw I do give him a ton of credit. His first slash had me unprepared - took out my shields and most my health. I backed up to get around him and put him in front of me - but he strafed to nearby terrain. He could of rushed foward and taken my kill at the risk of my HMG already pointing at him - but he instead fled with my bullets chasing.
Wish I remembered his name now. I saw him get 6 kills with it. It was obvious he knew what he was doing if I never saw him again and I was the only heavy on my side. lol |

I am also working on the who needs guns ethos by leveling up my scout suits but am still far away from proto fits but in a few weeks time we shall see.
The hit detection is a bit off but then Vigor maxxed does help with a bit of extra stamina for an extra swipe. |

===Update 25 Feb 2013===
I finally reached the 1million SP mark in terms of 'Unallocated' skill points. Man, what a grind. That leaves me with just over 200,000 SP left to grind which when combined with active SP gains I should be able to finally wear that Prototype Scout Suit within this week. Hopefully by this Friday. Once that happens, my focus will shift to what's left to train which are now made insignificant after grinding this much. I realize now that the amount of SP I am grinding this very moment will be the exact amount of total SP I grind for the previous 1-4 levels of the Gallente Scout Dropsuit skill book.
It makes me wonder what everyone else must feel at this point if they are trying to go all proto in regards to the suits given the training multipliers that they have. Exhausting right? It just puts all other training to shame so that when you finally focus on the little skill books with smaller multipliers they don't seem that much to train on anymore.
Overall, I'm just happy that this is almost over and I will finally be able to focus on upgrading the Nova Knife from the Standard one to the Proto. Once that is done, it's only a matter of time when I finally skill up Mobility, Endurance, Vigor, Dropsuit Command, and Profile Dampening (all to level 5).
Please be aware that even after all of this, my journey will have only begun as I will finally be able to outflank my enemies more effectively and sneak on them more stealthily without having to worry about those damn snipers. To think that all of this is will happen to me SOON (TM) and that this is just before CCP introduces the cloaking modules. God, I can't wait for Fanfest 2013 to see what they have in store for the scouts.
So far, in my current state, it's been mostly hit-or-miss in regards to the Standard Nova Knife. It's just so limiting. The charge time is long and the damage output is minimal even with 2x Complex Sidearm Damage Modules. But that's ok with me. That was usually expected from a weapon that's considered entry level for most players. It's kind of like handing over a pair of safety scissors to a little kid just to let him see how it is. But as the kid grows up, so will the level of the tools he/she will handle assuming they build some kind of interest for it.
When I see a Nova Knife, I don't see a weapon that people can just fool around with and not take seriously. I see a tool capable of much greater things. With the right skills and enough experience, that Nova Knife will soon be able to topple empires in a single swipe. The perfect tool for the perfect assassin. Speaking of which, I like to be able to track down which planet and district my target is just like how Eve players use NPC Agents to track down others. I still have a hit contract open that needs to be satisfied for a customer of mine. But that's a topic I'll bring up later on in the Feedback section of the forums. In the mean time, I have 200,000 SP left to grind for. |

Note: To all people who have trouble with Nova Knivers-
When you see one but he's too close to drop him before he lands an attack, run at him/her, but just to the side. Running past them means they will have to either recharge since they will likely release when you get close, or they will have to try to melee you with them.
Don't try to out-strafe a scout knifer, it won't work. Try to get either above or below them so that they have to aim up or down to connect, this makes it harder for them to hit you in most cases. It works best when you can strafe up and down a hil, because they have to keep re-correcting the height of their aim.
Get above them and jump over them when possible. If you can jump over their head and turn in mid air, you will have a second or so where you are facing them but they are not facing you. Vital anti-anything tactic, get behind your enemy.
Throw a grenade at your feet and just stand on the other side of the blast zone. Strafe around the blast zone to give yourself some breathing room. If they end up in it, they are dead, so they have to either back up or try to run through it. This isn't 100% since they can run through it, but just remember they are thinking on their feet too, so you have about a 50% chance of this working out well for you.
Best of luck to those non-knifers out there. And to the knifers as well I suppose. |

Maken, it has been far too long since we teamed up. This must happen again. Not entirely true, I've seen what Nina Karne Clone did last build with those things. You can max your melee skill, max your catalyzers, and totally bumrush people when they see you. I had SEVERAL run-ins with that build before the reset, and it is VERY effective.
Thus, my strategies for going up against a smart knifer. |

I've got a capture card, but sadly the HDMI input on it died recently, so I can only record SD input.
I could record our teaming up... but it will look like crap on the recording :P
@Baal - Speedmods only work to close the distance. Once you actually stop sprinting (Unless you're using the bug to sprint charged) People backpedal at the same speed they run forward, and the differences in base run speeds in different suits (Unless people have plates) is so small that simply walking backwards is enough to keep out of your melee's hitbox. You'll eventually catch up if you're in a scout chasing an assault or logi, but if you're both in the same suit with no difference in plates between you, then they are 100% immune to melee simply by virtue of moonwalking.
Your best bet as a knifer is to simply sprint with the charge (Do a base melee then start the charge while the animation plays out. As long as you are holding the charge button you will be able to jump and sprint freely while maintaining the charge)
Approaching someone head on in a straight line is usually pretty foolish unless you're sure you've got the HP to survive in the time it takes to close the distance. Juking while sprinting is generally the best tactic, though it means you generally need to take your eyes off your target and rely on situational awareness to keep tabs on where they are every time you change direction and your camera swivels back to them.
Often as a Knife user I find myself running past someone on purpose, then jumping backwards over them to further disorient them to leave them vulnerable to stabbing.
One of the biggest hurdles to knife wielding is picking your battles. Your first instinct is to stab everyone you see, but without a lot of practice aggressive knifing like this will just end up getting you killed a lot with not many kills to show for it in return. Misdirection is your best friend. Running away from people, and then using cover to distract or disorient people to either sneak up on (or let them close the distance for you) will generally net you a lot of kills with very few deaths.
Alternatively, you can go for an entirely ninja-esque approach, attempting not to be seen at all. This method usually results in spending most of your time killing snipers and people hacking structures and objectives near the fringes of the map. Ninja Knifing becomes exponentially harder as you get closer to where the firefights are happening. Though, it is possible to mix an agressive approach with a ninja approach to great success.
I generally try to do a mix of both. If I'm playing without a squad, I'll generally roam and play very aggressively. If I'm with a squad, I'll take a more ninja-esque approach and either distract people so my squad can shoot people, or sneak up on guys my squad is approaching and try to knife them all in the back while they shoot at my buddies. |

I enjoy the tales of the Ninja Knifers, but I still enjoy being a Shotgun Ninja more.
If I miss, or fall short of the kill with my first shot, I can try again MUCH faster than I'd be able to with Nova Knives.
I've died to good Knife wielders, but I've also killed a few. |

Which will probably be an anti-climax if it happend I look forward to the day we meet on the battlefield to test this glorious game of chicken sadly it will probably be spoiled by a blueberry interupting lol thats how most of my more exciting battles have ended so far my favourite was having a lengthy MD battle with an enemy MD user to only see it end by me getting squashed by an enemy LAV mid battle it rather spoilt the mood.

Thank you. It's not easy being a ninja knifer considering the heavy losses I trend to suffer (knife in a gun fight, duh) but if my suffering brings much needed information to the community, then so be it. |

Honestly, if someone has enough awareness that I'm nearby with a knife that they can cook a grenade and get ready for me, I should leave them alone and wait for them to drop their guard again. |

Funny you mention that. Recently I had a one-on-one encounter with a heavy wielding an HMG. After surprising him with the initial strike and caught his attention, I kept circling the crates in the dark under belly of the structure. As I avoided his shots I threw a slew of flux grenades to take out what little shield he had left and started to circle him like a Rifter on a Megathron. He kept on missing and missing until he stopped firing to get his bearings. Every time that happened I kept widdling down his armor with a few scrapes of the knives. Lucky for him he managed to land a few rounds on me and I died.
I was thinking "well played" because the encounter lasted a good 15-20 seconds. |

ok then. the B series you must have noticed how much damage you could get out of 3 swings of the knives? or does that extra damage not apply or something? would be nice to know because that suit was the only reason why i would skill into them |

Oh, I forgot about that. Well, considering that the "accidental" dev blog mentioned the cloak as an equipment, that will probably be the only use for the equipment slots. You might have to sacrifice one or two kinetic catalyzers, but hey you're invisible. |

Hey Maken! It has been a while! If you don't remember me, that's ok...
I was the lone mercenary running a Logi suit and providing you backup. I believe we were the only 2 in the squad and I was impressed that you ran such a dangerous mission: assassination by Nova Knives.
I am thoroughly impressed with you research, your stories, and your dedication to the progression of becoming the first (well maybe not "first" but most well documented?) Master Ninja Knifer.
You've actually managed to inspire me into making a Nova Knife build, however, I'm afraid it will have to be put on hold for some time. I have managed to find some love with the Forge Gun and running Logistics with my squad and corp.
With the leaked dev blog and hearing your story about how effective those Profile Dampeners are, I will be sure to take points into a (hopefully) fixed active scanner tools. I have no doubt that should I find myself in a match with you and happen to be against you with cloaking abilities, you will be the first person I'll be looking for.
I hope to see you again in a match, whether it be on the right side or the wrong side of my gun. If I do see you, I'll try to send you a friendly message. o7 |

Thank you for the compliment.
I was wondering who it was that kept following me and yes I do recall a logibro following me. Thanks for the help.
Also, my brother specializes in heavies and I can see that the forge guns are a good investment. |

Does the B series really have a damage modifier above the other scout suits? I don't recall looking at the B series specifically (since I'm not there yet) but I thought that the lower level type 1, 2 etc.... have 135 melee HP damage mod. What does the B series have? |
