If people don't like the game then they are welcome to voice their opinion. I know plenty of people who have tried the game and don't like it. their reasons are pretty sound.
I think it is pretty telling that many of the people who defend Dust do so by praising what the game will be, not what it is now. Yeah its open for discussion but discussion isn't whats happening. People are playing 1 match of it deciding its not like cod and quiting Then going on websites and bashing a game they know nothing about Agreed. The issue i have isn't with whether DUST has flaws etc., it's with the total ignorance of some of these reviewers. And it's not just random peeps on youtube either - there are many examples of game journalists reviewing the game with obviously no understanding of the mechanics of the game - playing for hours without customizing a dropsuit fitting or buying and training a skill. Or misunderstanding OBs and precision strikes. Or pay-to-win. The list goes on. But to balance that I've seen a lot of word-of-mouth giving DUST some very solid PR. I'd say that on balance, the word-of-mouth is already trumping the ignorance. Hopefully you're right because I would really like a larger community The one we r stuck with now reminds me of a daycare/preschool that's just the imp's, unfortunately they're very vocal |

The answer also cannot be "It's just beta! wait! it will get better I promise!" There are plenty of awesome things in this game now that new players can't feasibly touch on day one without know how to get there (Laser rifles, HMGs, tanks, typical things that aren't starter fits)
We are trying open the eyes of a certain type of player to a broader view of what a game can be. This console FPS player type is used to being able to either hit the ground running fast or play through a campaign.
Thinking back to the first day I logged in, going through the neocon tutorials, the only thing I wanted to see was how the game played. I wanted to get boots on the ground and drop a few enemies to see how the game felt. Near what seemed like an eternity of boring crap about a bunch of stuff I didn't understand, I finally got into a match.
Most of the stuff felt familiar, trigger, aim, run, turn, "wtf is this on R2? where's my grenade?", "why do I keep crouching when I try to switch to my sidearem?" kind of stuff, but familiar enough to feel comfortable enough to hold my own. Then it happened. Saw an enemy, ADS, Level, Fire, he didn't die. He turned, fired on me, I dropped. "Ok, shooting mechanics are a little different. guess I need to put a few more rounds into them" Next enemy, full mag, no kill, got dropped. "Hmm, maybe my connection is screwed? I know I hit that guy with everything I had?" Next enemy, came up behind, he's sitting still, leveled, full mag, he didn't drop. "WTF!?!"
Point being that In no other FPS out there today do you have to lay down what seemed like an insane amount of damage to drop someone. And to top it of, I was dying every fast, was faster than the people I was shooting.
Moving on, I heard NO ONE talking. Not in the lobby, not in the game, No Where. There was this text lobby. "wtf is this I need to plug in a keyboard to chat with these people? Hope they don't expect me to do this in game." And Chat room folks weren't helpful at all. Day one people are just annoying. Tried to join another game, all suits invalid. Two weeks went by before I figured out how to turn on my Mic, and another couple of days before I was actually in a squad with someone else with a mic on and talked to someone for the first time.
Point being that there is such a learning CLIFF on your first day that something more needs to be done to help FPS players used to instant gratification understand the depth of this game quick, but not make it feel like they need to spend the first week researching how to play. The tutorials are nice, way better now than the build I came in on. But you don't really 'do' anything in them.
So hopefully the suggestions for training grounds get here quick. Give the new player some bots to shoot at, give him free dropship and tank driving lessons. LAV racing. Let them earn a base amount of SP in those matches, say 200k, and don't let them in public matches until they've earned at least 50k.
Hell I've been here for 6 months and I just jumped into a tank for the first time as a driver for a squadmate tank whom's RDV pilot thought it would be hilarious if he just held onto the tank for more than a minute, until my guy got under it.
Biggest point I am trying to make is that time for first impressions is now. This is a sensitive time for this game, and we should help them 'see the light' so to speak, as apposed to pointing and 'GTFO'
i know what you mean when you talk about a learning cliff first time i picked dust up around September it confused the hell out of me so bad i put it down and forget about it, i started playing again around the 10th and remembered enough of the basics and read the tutorials so that i had a clue of what i was doing, i joined a corp and got a lot of advice from more experienced players that helped a lot. I remember the first time i went on the loadout screen i looked at it and went "wtf is this? what do i do?" now i often spend 10-20 minutes just tweaking my dropship. Dust is a hard game to get into but it really is worth it, aighun gave me the idea to say this but Dust is a diamond in the rough, it really could become something great. |
