I've been wondering what some of our dust/eve names mean to some people such as heritage, religious, family, interest, something we would type up in a rush just to get to play sooner, or something else.
My first name is a reference to Julius Ceasar, the man who ruled a powerful nation that would be the inspiration of the U.S. policies and architecture and the last name is a reference to Deo Vindice (Latin = God our Vindicator) which is considered the confederate motto which my ancestors were loyal to.
I just wanna hear y'alls sides of the discussion, CCP is welcome to join.

Aldeland was given me by eves random name generator. I hit the random name button until I found one I liked then changed the first name to thrawn. |

Caliban = antagonist in The Tempest by Shakespeare who was considered a "beast man" also a character in X-Men whose name I've always liked

After taking latin I chose the name Semper Fi for my online persona........after of which I realized that it was also the Marine motto but that was not why I chose it. I chose it because I like what it means. "always faithful" or "to the end". I put 1999 in the name for my PSN for obvious reasons of Semper FI being already chosen and 1999 was the year I started using this as my sole online persona for gaming. |

Mine is styled on Arabic partonymic (nasab) and relational (nisbah) names. "Ibn" is the patronymic portion, meaning "son of". "Al Alasab'e" is a surname often used to indicate city of birth or tribe. "Al Alasab'e" means, if google translate was correct, "the fingers". It's a reference to my EVE Toon's name, "Gunfingers". I mixed this with names that aren't Semitic ("Alan" is European, "Xuan" is Vietnamese) because I like the idea that cultural barriers have broken down over the years and become completely mixed.
As an example of a similar name, fans of Mass Effect may remember the name "Khalisah Bint Sinan al-Jilani", meaning "Khalisah, daughter of Sinan, the Jilanian". Which technically means it's Iranian, rather than Arabic, in her case, but that's just splitting hairs.

Used my PSN name but had to add the A because mooneagle was taken. BOO! Came up with mooneagle in college because I needed to create a user name. Moon=english for Luna, my maiden name. Eagles=college mascot. |

It's supposed to be a humorous commentary on all the generic buzzwords people put in their online handles.
all the silent-this and the somethingorother-007. if you ever played FFXI, how many clouds and sepiroths were there? about a billion? if you've been on xbox live, how many masterchiefs or 117s did you see? one in every game? how many tags involve the numbers 420 or the word darth?
it's gotten better over the years, but there's still a generic name or 2 in every match you play. |
