To be blunt here, I don't see how Dust 514 is in anything but terrible shape at the moment.
The game is unstable with bugs and connectivity issues and loading times are painful. Someone at CCP should start a timer the moment they hit X and start up the game to the point that you've spawned on the battlefield. I mean, nice quarters and all but what actual purpose do they serve? The EVE Online community were quick to call out the Captain's Quarters for what they were, a gimmick that took up loading time.
Core gameplay in dust is alright, but nothing great. Bland would be the word to best describe it.
The game is severely lacking in content and depth. Yes, I know CCP have a long history of adding amazing amounts of content to EVE but this content was added over the course of a decade. Even with added game modes, suits for all races and the like I don't see how the game will become much more interesting any time soon. What's to keep people playing?
Corporation battles is the only thing which seems to have any kind of lasting appeal but we already have a few corporations that have gotten so far ahead with existing in-game knowledge from closed beta, maxing the SP cap from day 1 and using SP boosters that they face little challenge and can use expensive equipment without isk being a concern. I do expect these corporations eventually to tire of facing little to no resistance and move to the next game, sooner rather than later I believe. After all, what reason do they have to stick around?
The connectivity with EVE Online is a weak gimmick that even if fully implemented I do not see being very meaningful for the Dust 514 players. It's downright laughable how CCP markets the game as an MMOFPS, it's nothing like an MMOFPS and it plays little different from games like MAG or Halo.
The community on the forums is quite frankly horrid. I could sum it up with bad fads, people fuelling the status of a few corps , e-peen wars and that's that. There's very little actual sharing of game insight, like intelligent discussion on fitting and the like. There's no public community to speak of in game, looking at the forums I'm honestly thankful for it.
Yes, the game is in a Beta and we're certain to see some improvements, but just how much is limited. Fact of the matter as well is that people are already paying money for Dust 514 and that there are (supposedly) no further SP resets. If you ask me the label of beta is merely an excuse at this point for a rushed product. Dust 514 is already losing it's new car smell and once its gone it's going to be more difficult to attract new players to the game, especially considering how the SP system always has been deterring new players from EVE Online and how the SP gap grows larger each day.
The interest for Dust 514 seems very low, most friends I talk with have no idea that the game either exists or that it's been released. Those that do are reluctant to try it despite it being free, considering its "free to play" model I find it to be somewhat surprising that there aren't more people playing.
Now, I like EVE Online and I think Dust 514 has great potential, but as it currently stands I can't recommend the game to people on any other level than that it's free.
So... when IF ever will we see Dust 514's potential? Or is it gonna go the route of MAG and be let to rust in EVE Online as another Mechanic that didn't quite work out?

I don't think anybody can tell the future. If the game doesn't satisfy you play something else. Not flaming you. Just we are all waiting for new stuff. Just understand its a huge step ccp is taking to make the game. |

TL:DR: Nerf closed beta players, Stop rushing the product, hurry up and release more content, I hate this game but am compelled to play it.
When DUSTs numbers drop, more will come, and once DUST becomes more relative to EVE (not a gimmick BTW) more will play. DUST is one of those games most ppl will play for a few months, move on, then come back to after every patch/build etc, whilst core players will stay for YEARS and form an "elite clique" that new players respect/hate. |

its a beta ffs, we only have the very basic stuff in game so it can be TESTED and thats what people forget were here to test the game as they add stuff, this is not a released product |

Well there is also a reason why "nobody" knows about the game. It's in beta and CCP simply hasn't started marketing it outside Eve's playerbase. Why would they? It's in beta. It's better to start marketing it when it's "finished".
I do admit that just getting more weapons and stuff won't keep the game floating. It NEEDS a deep MMO-experience to do so. Will that be dust itself or the Eve-universe is another matter. With this I mean that will "our" MMO-experience be more dust related rather than Eve-universe related. Eve-pilot could care less about our MMO-progess-to-add-weapon-modules (which I would feel to be a dust related mmo-experience). If the MMO-experience is closely tied to the eve-universe where we make in impact on eve...mmmmmm.
Then we come to another thing. We are mostly whining/speaking about how Evepilots like/hate us dusterts and that they care or don't care about our actions. Well...do dusters care about Evepilots? Are we concerned about the coalitions or the prices of jita? Do we even have ANY reason to do so?
I personally think the key to success is to get everyone to care about Eve-universe. Not so much which tool we use (eve, dust514). |

All of your points are valid, and I have to admit that at times I feel the frustration too.
But then I give my head a shake and deliver myself a good slap across the face. Because this is exactly what I wanted CCP to do - stay absolutely focused on core gameplay mechanics until they can be compared favourably with the best of the competition. And as you say, things are vastly improved in that respect right now, compared to the early days.
We're not there yet, though, and I am deeply grateful that CCP is staying the course and prioritizing the foundations of the game.
So i'm backing CCP up on this. You are asking for these things too early, and it's not in the best interests of the game. Although we have to fight against frustration, CCP has the much greater struggle: they have to fight against temptation, because they could start adding content and depth tomorrow, and undoubtedly there is time and financial pressure to do so.
I hate to say it, but if CCP needs another 6 months or a year to make the lag/hit detection/aiming mechanics/combat animations/controller response/terrain interaction/object interaction/weapon feel/equipment feel/character motion/etc. world-class then that's ok by me. Dammit. |

it was marketed at Christmas on new ps3 boxes, which also provided in game vouchers. The game, I presume, was supposed to be out by then. The full on marketing I guess had to be pulled. The fact that it had to be pulled shows that the game is in some form of development hell.
I have been here since last May and I don't see much improvement to the core mechanics of the game. The usual response has been 'its a beta'. But this was a tired response before Christmas.
Those of us that are still here despite all this, and want it to succeed, is because we like the vision/ potential CCP wants Dust to be. There is just a difference between the vision and the implementation.

If anything I say try back every 6 months. usually by then you'll probably see a psn advertisement for a new expansion. Don't delete your character and come back with some more sp than you left. This isn't going to be like cod where 2 years after its still the same game. |

True it's rough around the edges but its expected, it has lag at times but thats expected.

won't really argue with OP, your not the only one who feels this way but at this same time rome wasn't built over night. you ppl have little grasp on reality tho- if they're taking longer to release something it's for a reason, not because "developement has entered into hell" obviously you've never played a game that was rushed to meet some deadline and failed miserable because the game was incomplete because the devs were so worried about the stupid deadline they had to meet they end up cutting corners on basic things like wall clipping.

I share the OP's misgivings. Right now Dust has some real ambition on the strategic meta level, but none of that is implemented. The tactical gameplay (i.e. actual shooty bits) is half realized, blandly relying on established tropes with mediocre execution at this point. The beta is now totally open on PSN so the "it's not released yet" argument rings hollow. |

Sheepbringer gets it. Especially the last line. This apprehension rippling through the community that ranges from slight malaise to full-blown panic about how the game will fail is only a temporary symptom while CCP is working on some fairly substantial core systems that will deepen the integration between the two games and give more people in both games a reason to care.
The next major content release should include a lot of features that I personally think will stir the pot fairly heavily, based on my recent talks with CCP. And granted, the team hasn't been perfect on the communication side either, but I can report with confidence that they have a firm grasp on the core issues that are causing the apathy, and seem to be working more on the "link" than on simply stacking the game with more suits and mods (though those are on the way as well). Until than, enjoy the deathmatches and "leveling" for what it is, or don't, and go play something else until its in a state where you're having fun. No one's obligated to play a game they don't enjoy.
I recently submitted a multi-page document based on my experiences with the Dust OB events as well as witnessing combined system takeovers using coordinated Dust/EVE player interaction. I spoke directly to the broken contract / FW system and need for a cross-platform economy to emerge, no matter how rudimentary originally. The sooner we get the mechanics to a place where they are easily accessible, rewarding, and visibly meaningful to players in both games, the sooner we'll see this malaise lifted and Dust will start to come into its own. CCP Nullarbor forwarded this document to the rest of the team and said it generated a lot of discussion, so I know CCP is listening to the players and working with the CSM during this time, even if it seems quieter than it should.
Hang in there, I appreciate everyone's patience! And I hope most of you are learning to have fun in the mean time regardless. Thanks for all those who have invited me into your squads and shown me what your corps have been up to, its been time well spent.

Also - keep in mind that so much of the work in the last year has been laying technological foundations for the cross-platform integration and deployment onto Tranqulity. Now that its up and live, I'm seeing a lot more focus on developing features rather than infrastructure, though that is always needed as well for obvious reasons. We're still not there yet in terms of performance - and have a ways to go before we see the buttery-smooth gameplay worthy of marketing as a "finished" product (which it will never truly be in the first place. ) I don't think that the amount of content added in the last year will even hold a candle to what's coming in 2013, based on what we've been shown. |

If they were more open with the community and communicated their plans more often and in more detail, then I think people would be more understanding of where the game is and where it's going.
The problem is that we try to communicate our issues with them, and when we get no information about what's being done, it makes it seem like nothing is being done. In general, the three things it seems we ever hear from CCP is soon, added to the backlog, or nothing at all.
I know devs don't like to give away their plans because they know they are highly tentative, but I think this community would be understanding of things changing. Just let us know what's going on. |

Thats a word, I definately like this idea. I'm just a little bit afraid of this whiny-attitude which is in this forums if you know what I mean. The people here already go crazy about everything, just watch all this threads about the new Cap system after CCP tried to cumminicate with us Dusters. From that point I totally understand that they don't share the informations, because of the uprising shitstorm every message would set lose.
BUT that's no excuse, I just wish people here would come to a normal conversation again and stop all this anoying behavior like always complaining and trolling around.

1. Eve is not dying, it has a very strong player base and is going strong. Are they growing to the millions no. But to say its dying is false. Currently CCP is changing there outlook from player retention to player base growing. Over the next year you will see their player base start to grow. 2. Dust 514 is 90% broken. Even though its in beta its hard for me to play anymore do to how broken it is. Once they fix all the problems I think they have something special. |

The same thing happens on the WoW forums every expansion. It happened quite a bit during the Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Litch King expansions, despite the fact that the playerbase grew over very quickly over the course of both of those before capping around the end of WotLK. |
